The Potters Bar crash was devastating. I would have thought that the accident left it a total write off. I doubt it would've been put back into service.

Three cars have been at Wolverton for a long time, the other car moved there earlier this year.

Where the first 3 cars damaged?, I though the majoritity of damage occured to the rear car as it hit the platforms.

AFAIK the two cars that survived the Grayrigg derailment are being used for training purposes by Virgin.

I think that's all of hstmatt's questions solved, apart from the part about Crewe and the supermarket!

The problem with units is that if one coach gets written off there is not a great amount that can be done with the remaining coaches other than strip them for parts. Something like a Sprinter you might be able to reform surviving coaches into another unit, or if the units have different lengths you could stick an intermediate coach into a shorter one, but other than that, loose coach and you really loose the unit. Of cource if two units are involved in an accident (or different accidents around the same time) then it's sometimes possible to form another unit out of the remaining coaches.

thankfully crashes that write vehicles off are few and far between, which means that's not a major problem

It wasn't such a problem in the days when 'mix and match' units could be created - I recall the time when the SR used to have a unit (7700) which was a mix of VEP, CEP and CIG vehicles (or something like that), which were basically all spare cars from units which had been reformed/disbanded as a result of write-offs. This just isn't possible nowadays, as so many classes of unit just aren't compatible with each other - the result of a disjointed railway network which does not run as a single entity. A Class 377/375/450 hybrid, no chance!

The latest I heard (although strictly grapevine) was that the insurers had only just paid out and that it may be reformed - don't know how much truth there is in that though. The guy who told me can talk for England :o)

I was under the impression that one of the cabs is now at Hornsey EMUD as part of the Class 365 simulator down there for driver training purposes.

Seriously!? Who would want to train in the cab from the Potters Bar crash?! :|

But the cab that was at the front of the unit at the time was barely involved in the crash at all: The leading three carriages carried on through Potters Bar station before coming to a stop unaffected by the carnage unfolding behind them (except for the trailing bogie of the third carriage which was derailed).

Presumably the end that didn't end up on the platform. As I said earlier the 3 undamaged* coaches have been stripped completely and are just empty shells

*Though I understand that one was bent by the derailed coach before it broke free

Even so, if the company said to me in the middle of my training, 'Oh, this cab was in the Potters Bar crash, and today, you'll be training in it', I'd still feel a bit uncomfortable!

I found one photo of the set at Crewe on the web, seemingly taken years ago, does anyone have any links to pics of it at Wolverton or know if it is stored as a set or separated, if ostensibly complete or not? Cheers

Those pictures look like they were taken at the last Crewe Works open day about 5 years ago; I took a virtually identical picture...

This probably sounds very naïve, but those 3 coaches of the 365 look to be in fairly reasonable condition considering the accident, and they look to me to be repairable, but obviously I have no idea what is repairable and what is not. If the photo was indeed taken 5 years ago then unless it was stored inside, the exterior condition would've deteriorated quite a bit. Has anyone got any photos of the carriage that ended up on the platform since the accident? It'll be interesting to see how badly damaged it is/was. Also, does anybody have any idea how much it would cost to repair this unit and return it to service? I was just wondering if it was feasible. And does anybody know if it will ever return to service? Its probably unlikely, but it would be nice to see it back in traffic one day. :)

The EC 91 involved in both Hatfield and Heck was returned to service after the accidents.. (am aware of the difference in damage). If a loco can survive two accidents like that and not have the Daily M(F)ail jump on it then I'm sure this could. :)

I agree it would definitely be interesting to see it in its current state. It would be helpful if it could be repaired though, one extra 365 could be an extra 8/12 car service in the peaks.

A nice idea but I'm fairly sure that the vehicle that ended up sideways on a platform was a total wright off so 365526 could only ever return as a 3-car unit.
