350110 sounds like a 350/2

I was in Watford Junction last Wednesday, watching the 1101 to Crewe depart. It was formed of 350125(?)+350110, and I'm certain that 110 sounded exactly like a 350/2 while accelerating. Have the inverters been replaced recently?

Now that is odd. Not that I know of, but I'll ask around.

Could it be that 110 was going faster past you than 125, so you heard the higher pitched sounds that are similar to the /2s?

I had just disembarked from a LO 313 and got to within a few metres of 110 before it took off. I couldn't tell what 125 sounded like as I wasn't standing close enough to it, but the pitch from 110 clearly increased once the formation hit a certain speed which is the case with /2s (you probably already know that the pitch from /1s on AC never changes).

Hmm that is odd - yes I know the difference of /1s and /2s well after commuting on them daily for 3 years!

Shouldn't be. The West Coast Desiros don't need the upgrade, because they were never 'downgraded' so to speak in the first place. The infrastructure on WCML was adequate to support them at 100% capability.

The upgrade that SWTs desiros had was to stop heat build up in some parts of the traction pack caused by the constant start/stop use on suburban work that some of them get used on.
This is why when they start off there is a low tone for a few seconds before the high tone.

Thanks for that - I was under the impression it was an upgrade for higher power.

When you take power on a 450, if you whack them wide open (not good driving) you will get 100% power for about 5 seconds then it falls off to about 55% until about 60 mph, then increasing very slowly to about 65%.

To keep the acceleration comparable the 444s are set a little higher ( falls off to about 60% and 75% at 60 mph) due to the extra weight of the 5th coach.
There is some slight variation and my figures are what I can remember but its around about that.

Its funny you should say that! Being ex LM staff, I too heard this once from a /1 unit out of euston but was convinced id either lost the plot or was hearing things :roll:

The inverters in 350126 have been altered/changed as well (I rode it from Birmingham New Street to Milton Keynes Central yesterday), though not in 350124.

Perhaps we should make a list of those done so far.
