Indeed, there was a message at Liverpool Street under the 16:30 that said no reservations, no catering, limited first class and toilets.

Those trains, along with the 06:25 down and 22:00 up, have frequently been worked by 321s on an ad hoc basis for several years.
2200 up has to be an IC set now as it's worked by a Norwich driver as far as Colchester. Only way round it would be if the 321 ecs around 2040 is cancelled.

Are 317s ever used on the Norwich runs at the mo? Just watching a YouTube vid of a 317 at Manningtree going up the GEML (not Harwich) a couple of weeks ago, could have been a Norwich or Ipswich diagram. Was filmed in the evening

I believe the same 317s have a booked diagram on the GEML IIRC 1617 to Witham and back and 1815ish to Ipswich and back

There was once a ruling that if 321 substitution took place on GA that a trolley could be placed onboard only if there where 2 members of catering staff allocated to it in either unit as no suitable location to store unattended but they are not now to be put on at all. Class 170s For a while where static only due to risk of tipping in the very uneven vestibules but again suffer from no safe storage area so this has been stopped too.

ScotRail had trolleys on their Class 170 services (and still do when they operate long distance), and have had absolutely no issues with tipping. We can also put them on our 156s & 158s. Catering staff just sit with the trolley in the vestibule. Although I guess on a 321 it would be a bit more difficult to navigate the trolley as it is 3+2.

Not been allowed on Anglia/NXEA/GA 170s for many years. May be trolley style. First Great Eastern used to have a trolley on 321s many moons ago.

Catering staff on GA have to have a secure place to leave the trolley. Guards will not take responsibility for it either. Suppose it's all down to working conditions. The private cowboys back in the day gave little consideration to staff paying minimum wage & minimum conditions. I recall staff being expected to load trolleys by lifting onboard if no ramp available. Staff turnover was unsurprisingly very high indeed as was back ache.

It is rather strange, surprised they haven't put that into place up on ScotRail.
