St Helens Central station closed due to emergency services dealing with an incident. Reportedly this is due to an issue with 319431 which the fire service are currently dealing with. 319431 only entered service with Northern yesterday.

Not sure what unit involved but the following report gives some details of a possible fire on a Northern 319...

http://www.sthelensstar.co.uk/news/..._at_St_Helens_Central_station_following_fire/
SERVICES at St Helens Central station came to a standstill on Friday after emergency services were called to deal with a "small fire" on board a train.

Passengers reported smelling smoke inside the the train. Some suggested a fire broke out in an overhead luggage compartment**
No one was injured in the incident, which was reported to British Transport Police and the Fire Service at 2.55pm.
The fire has now been put out.

A Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service statement read: "Firefighters are currently attending a small electrical fire on a train carriage at St Helens Central railway station.

"Two fire engines are at the scene and crews are using a hose reel jet to tackle the fire...

The realisation that the indignity of having Northern emblazoned down your flanks is worse even than First Capital Connect...  <D

Seems to have been the 14:00 Lime St. - Wigan NW. Some whitish smoke coming from second coach, with fire hoses being directed onto the train when I passed the station at about 15:00 today. Looking at RTT, it appears that trains towards Wigan are being diverted via Earlestown, but trains towards Liverpool are now being allowed through St. Helens Central. I could not see any external damage to the coach, but did not get close enough to see the interior.

What likely culprits (pieces of equipment) are there on that coach?

If it is indeed in the "Luggage Rack" I'd be thinking lighting inverter or fitting, not much else in the roof. Unless of course it's not a luggage rack and is in the motor car, then it could have been a 25kV related thing.

It wa an electrical fire behind the new DDA toilet. Has caused significant damage as fire brigade had to saw a hole in the roof of the train (obviously after isolation) to put it out and cool.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was refurbished with the new toilet added when it was with Thameslink (although it's possible Northern modified it again in some way)

The 319s are attempting a suicide pact which they will only end when the decision to use 387s instead of 319s on GWR routes is reversed. ;)

We had at least one fire starting in a hand dryer on a 375 - with it being behind the toilet I hope it's not the same thing again.

No need to repair there are plenty of spares, why waste money unnecessarily

Well it would depend on the damage to the unit. I made the assumption not knowing the scale of damage. If it is structual then yes but if it's just panel damage, repair. But this is Nothern we're talking about so they'd put ANYTHING that isn't written off back in service!

The ROSCO have a big say, too, and the line from them may well be "fix it", just as it was with 43160's collision damage.

If it was in the overhead luggage rack then a lithium battery fire in a passenger's luggage could be a possibility
