I can't tell you for definite, but they're usually on Cambridge/Peterborough services which stop at Potters Bar, Hatfield, Welwyn GC, Welwyn North and Knebworth.

The 15th March is a Sunday, and the only trains to fit this are the xx:06 to Cambridge. I'm not certain but that's what they usually are.

On a normal Sunday, the 0905, 1105, 1205, 1305, 1505, 1605, 1705, 1805, 1905, 2005, 2105, 2205, 2305 and 0004 services out of King's Cross are booked for 1x317. All other services are 365.

*However* the date in question has extensive engineering work, so the above won't apply, and they could appear anywhere. Generally they don't get put on any diagram which involves working north of Cambridge, and they also tend to get concentrated on the slower stopping services. But neither of these 'rules' are set in stone.

there's also 321s make it to Cambridge- normally on set diagrams, but on engineering weekends who knows?

I've even been on a 12-car 317 out of KGX- Cambridge united had been playing at Wembley and there were extras on. I hadn't been at the match, but got on one the extras anyway. It was deathly quiet in the front carriage, but apparently sardine-like at the back. And yes, the inter-unit gangways were open...

I just realized most VTEC services dont run to KGX that day either, so my plans are kinda ruined now. (Was planning to do some trainspotting on the ECML) But they do run on the 14th march(or am i mistaken), you guessed right my next question is: What services out of KGX are formed of a 317 on the 14th march after 2 PM? Most of the stoppers to Peterborough and Cambridge?

As far as I can tell it's normal Saturday diagrams that day. Therefore, this should produce the following 317s:

0735, 0805, 0835, 1135, 1205, 1505, 1535, 1735, 1835, 1905, 2135, 2205, 2305. All of the above are booked 1x317, although not always guaranteed to be so. If you're lucky, you may see some out covering 365s, or if there are any football extras.

If you're wanting to see large numbers then you'd need a weekday, where normally 10 out of the 12 are in operation during the peaks. On a Saturday there are booked to be no more than 3 out at any one time, 4 in total. Weekdays also produce some faster running on certain services.

As they use less units at the weekend, they tend to park the 317s and 321s in favour of using the 365s
