Does anyone know the actual problem that has caused multiple cancellations and service diversions for Northern, Grand Central and Transpennine trains virtually all day today please?

Bit light on detail, but there seems to have been some unspecified signalling problem in the "Middlesbrough area". Anyone able to provide any further information?

Extract(s)...
Route(s) affected
Between Sunderland and Middlesbrough / Darlington / Northallerton
Description
Lines have reopened following a fault with the signalling system in the Middlesbrough area. Trains running between Sunderland and Middlesbrough / Darlington / Northallerton may still be cancelled or revised.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Did seem faintly catastrophic yesterday, I was glad that I happend to be driving rather than on the train.

I was slightly surprised that Northern didn't seem able to establish a fairly regular shuttle between Middlesbrough and Saltburn. It seemed like there must be units and crew available?
