I’ve seen a 3 car 150/9 hybrid ATW unit in Cardiff today didn’t get the unit number. When did they convert this unit and whether this is a temporary conversion?

I think it is a temporary arrangement, brought about following tree damage to a unit (can't remember which one though)

Yes it is a temporary arrangement. Part of 150217 damaged when hitting a tree. 150278 reformed using spare car to become 150978. I saw it in Manchester a few weeks ago.

.... reformed ... to become 150978. I saw it in Manchester a few weeks ago.

I know this was touched upon on another thread, but why does this reformed unit need a new number and why 1509xx?

Did ATW pluck a number out of thin air or was it assigned by a rail equivalent of the DVLA? :s

Easier identification and because it becomes a sub-class. GWRs 3 Car 158s are 158/9s and their 3 Car 150s are 150/9s and have been for years.
