2x159s on Poole - Waterloo stopper?

I was at Southampton Central earlier today and I noticed 2 159s pull into Platform 1 at around 12:45. Looking at the departure screen it transpired they were working the 12:49 stopper to Waterloo. Is this a normal occurrence for that train or just an anomaly (there were engineering works between Andover and Salisbury today)

I've personally have only seen them being used for trains to Exeter and beyond. It must just be an anomaly although I do not know why. I'd assume a problem with power somewhere?

Due to the engineering works between Andover and Salisbury the WoE services were being diverted via Romsey and Southampton Central. The train you saw would not have been working the stopping service to Waterloo, but would have run ahead of that and the fast service to Waterloo, so as to pick up its booked path at Basingstoke from 1331.

There shouldn't have been a problem with the 3rd rail since there were 444s/450s operating perfectly normally.

Not a problem. Sometimes they advertise the trains as stopping at Southampton when this happens, at other times they don't! Same thing will be happening Sunday due to the line been closed between Basingstoke and Salisbury.

159s used to operate in pairs on Southampton-Waterloo, and I sometimes caught one at around 11.00..this would be 1995 or 1996?

There was a daily service around that time from Salisbury - Waterloo via Southampton, forming a "92" from the latter.

There may have been more services booked, but as the 1996 timetable I have lists headcodes for most (except the one booked for 159), I think they were all officially 4xxs.

Well, there is still one service thats 159 worked weekdays - The 17:24 Basingstoke to Sotton Central... tis also the one thats usally late departing from basingstoke nearly all the time and catches passengers out who see the 159 coming into platform 1 rather than 2 - theres a salisbury bound service due around that time aswell...

The hourly CrossCountry service to/from Bournemouth goes between all three.

Is there? The Salisbury bound services leave Basingstoke at 17:07 and 17:37. The 17.24 Basingstoke - Southampton Central is booked a 450 anyway.

Thats odd - guess i was down there when there was a late or early salisbury bound service...but certainly every time ive been at basingstoke around 17:15 the 17:24 service has always been a 159 - The unit stables outside the station throught the day, and seems to work this service...

Plus its on my way back home from Colledge - going past the station and yep, 159 on the 17:24 to Southampton...

Well, Reading to Brighton...When new it was worked by the 170's...then towards the end of that franchise 158's were used...Franchise comes up for renewal which dosent include any SWT services to Reading and Brighton...Thanks DFT...so now the only way to get to Brighton from this area is Clapham Junction/Victoria to brighton...thats unless you want to take the much much slower Southern Service that is...

So now Basingstoke - Reading timetable looks more like this...XX:07 FGW, XX:37 FGW, XX:47 XC...Whereas the hourly SWT service was sometime around the xx:20 Mark...not much good now if you miss the xx:07 Service...

Its only an 30mins! At east midlands parkway, if you miss the two trains that come within 4 minutes of each other, you have to wait for 55 mins!

Has been booked as a 159 since the May timetable change. Uses the second units that is stabled in Long Valley all day (the first unit operates the 16:24 to Portsmouth Harbour).

Whereas the hourly SWT service was sometime around the xx:20 Mark

It was only every third hour that the service started from Reading, otherwise the Brighton service started at Basingstoke (xx24).

Ah, previously the 16:24 was booked 6 159, so I would assume that was when the 17.24 was booked 4 450.
