I have become fond of Newhaven Marine and was looking it up on RTT and, after setting it to display all services using it, saw 2F30 to Lewes which was cancelled. After going through every possible date, it is listed as cancelled

My question is: If Southern are not running a passenger service, why is it still listed? Is it easier to cancel the service rather then abandon it only to return at a later time?

I know it is replaced with an ECS working, my question was why do Southern (and RTT by extension) still list the cancelled 2F30?

So they can pretend it is just a "temporary" closure, even though there have been no passenger trains for nearly 10 years.

Surely somebody would have noticed this and asked questions

In theory.

In reality who is going to spend a few thousand pounds sorting this out? Don't forget that even the DfT is under immense pressure to cut costs.

No one is inconvenienced by this train not running is there?

Indeed. While it might seem to be a silly situation, it might be even sillier to do anything else in the circumstances.

We did exactly this with the Sinfin branch before its official closure.

Every March we would diagram units and men to work to Sinfin in the May timetable.

Every April we would issue a notice "temporarily" cancelling said diagrams.

Nonsense.

But required legally.

Having lived in Lewes all my life and worked in the Newhaven area I have never known a service to go to or from Newhaven Marine, although you can still buy tickets to/from there. In all honesty, with two Newhaven stations already in the Seaford route, there's no point in Southern sending trains there

It still has a use only for short termination if there is a problem on the single line to Seaford, but the station and the port buildings are now beyond repair so I doubt there will ever be a reason to use it again for a public service

What it is to be young! I'm not the only forum member to remember the Boat Trains (and the early train from Brighton for the day trippers...). ☺

I used to work those, I think the early one was 0605 to connect with the early boat and we had a late turn where we met the 8pm boat arrival and in the summer was lovely to sit on the roof of the terminal and watch the boat arrive in the setting evening sun

There were some real curiosities at Marine! I'm modelling Lewes in 1987 condition, and the 86-87 timetable includes amongst others...

0514 Littlehampton-Newhaven Marine (arr 0631)
0805 Portsmouth & Southsea-Newhaven Marine (arr 0937)
1735 Newhaven Marine-Portsmouth Harbour (arr 1935)
2105 Newhaven Harbour-Portsmouth Harbour (arr 2259)

Then there were the InterCity Marine-Manchester loco-hauled trips...still can't work out how the 47 could run round? And of course the conventional Victoria boat trains.

How the mighty have fallen :(

Were they definitely 47s or could they have been HST workings?

The Newhaven Marine to Manchester services were class 47 to and from Mitre Bridge. There is a run round loop at the Marine station originally used when the boat trains to Victoria were loco hauled ( class 70 'Hornbys' ). The newhaven to Manchester only ran for the 1986-7 timetable before being diverted to start at Brighton. http://www.1s76.com/1S76 1986.htm

I travelled to Newhaven on the last day of service, only two of us on board plus the train crew.

And the occasional (one-off?) crompton!

Just had a look on google earth for the now overgrown run-round loop - it looks like the headshunt for the loop is down round the corner, half way to the old Tide Mills beach sidings! I wonder if there's an old ground frame hiding in the undergrowth down there still.

So imagine the trip...1620 depart Manchester, 2115 arrive Newhaven Marine, then 1hr15to kill in Newhaven (maybe watch the 47 run round and depart with the ECS to Brighton?), 2230 ferry departure, arrive at some ungodly hour in Dieppe before another few hours on the SNCF to Paris St Lazare...you can see how it never caught on, but that sounds like my idea of heaven!
