Isn't AD25 DBL a private plate and therefore dateless, technically speaking?

Not that it matters if Delaine Buses can wait until 1 March to get it taxed.

It still can't be used until March as being a 25 plate you can't put it on any vehicle to make it look newer.

That is assuming it is leased, not bought outright? I once worked for a company who was the freight equivalent of Delaine; Family owned, well respected, well presented fleet, bought outright etc. We would often buy a new truck or small batch of and it may sit 6 months until it went on the road for a variety of reasons, one of which was a build slot had come up that suited the manufacturer to slot in our truck. We would take it early in exchange for a small discount and then put it on the road when we were ready, often in time for registration letter/number change or the MOT expiry date of the trucks it was replacing.

I think you're right, sourced from a plate maker but not linked to DVLA database.

DVLA does not release "future licence period" licence plates this early - at least, not to private (non commercial) owners. I know, I tried...

Yes. Delaine use ADxx DBL on most of there vehicles.

DVLA does not release "future licence period" licence plates this early - at least, not to private (non commercial) owners. I know, I tried...

Perhaps it's changed since then, 25 plate cherished registrations available now from DVLA.

Delaine have done this for some registration periods now. If I remember correctly (from last year's Omnibus Society weekend), this is entirely by design, and of the then most-recent few years, they'd ordered a number at once with delivery dates spread out one per registration period. A quick check of their fleetlist on bustimes shows a "DBL" registration for periods 56, 07, 08, 58, 59, 61, 12, 62, 63, 14, 64, 15, 65, 66, 17, 68, 70, 21, 71, 22, 72, 23, 73, 74 and now 25. They used to do the same with the old system and OCT registrations. It isn't perhaps surprising, therefore, if Alexander-Dennis have just got to theirs earlier than normal.

I'd be reasonably surprised if it were leased, based on what the Delaine-Smith family have said about how they run their business.

It probably is all to do with delivery slots. Delaine wanted an Enviro 400 City diesel. A model not regularly built. TfGM/Stagecoach are in the process of receiving the same model. Makes sense for Delaine's to be built at the same time.
