25 injured after buses collide

Twenty-five people have been injured after two buses crashed in Salford this morning.

A double decker and a single decker bus collided at the junction of Lower Broughton Road and Cromwell Road at 7:50am

The most seriously injured was the driver of the single decker bus, who suffered a minor head injury.

The single decker (First Bus) looks in a very bad state at the front, no wonder the driver was the worst injury. The Arriva double decker looks slightly better and as a '13' reg bus I assume Arriva will plan to repair it.

According to other reports yes but they do not appear to have designated school buses.

There's usually a lot of misreporting initially after bus crashes. There have been two in recent years on Mobberley Road, Knutsford on both occasions it has involved the normal Altrincham-Wilmslow-Knutsford service. For the first one (when it was the Arriva 288 service operated by a DART) the BBC claimed it was a school bus - which it wasn't even though it had a number of Knutsford High pupils on board. The second one (a middle of the day Vale Travel 88 service operated by a Versa) the MEN claimed a minibus carrying 11 passengers crashed - which again gave the impression it wasn't the normal scheduled bus service.

Sympathies to those injured: I wish them a speedy recovery.

It would be interesting to know what caused this. As for those vehicles, I would think that 60372 has possibly had it but the Gemini 2 LH - which looks like MX13 AEZ - will be bound for Ireland on a towtruck fairly soon.

1. First driver went through amber/red light.*
2. Arriva driver thought First driver was giving way but wasn't.*
3. Arriva driver misjudged speed of First bus and thought there was more time to turn.*

* Obviously which scenarios are valid depends how the traffic lights are programmed.

The vehicles involved were First 60372 (R582 SBA), and Arriva 4499 (MX13 AEZ).

The footage from the on-board cameras, would make interesting viewing.

As it was an head-on crash, surely both drivers should off been able to stop in time.

I had a TFGM data collector on my bus today who mentioned the incident to me as he took a call about it. He said that one of the drivers had a heart attack; though of course I don't know if that is fact or speculation.
