It's probably so they can get Rolling Stock down to Euston or something for an early morning run. Plus, most people may not want to just stay in London for the night, or they may be going to London to start their night out.

It provides a useful connection for people travelling from Scotland late at night. The 18xx from Glasgow (at least in the old TT) was the optimum train leaving Glasgow. The previous straight through to London train was the last one. The SuperVoyager run later would connect at Wolves with this train. I've used it many a time.

I'd assume it is to take passengers home who wanted to stay in London late at night for whatever reason. There are only 3 services after 2200 which run north of Northampton if we exclude the sleeper (2200 to Manchester, 2243 and 2343 to Wolverhampton).

Also a crew move back to Wolves and stock move back to Oxley as well as providing a late night train out London. Pretty much same reason the 2330 Kings Cross - Leeds run and thats normally fairly busy!

Presumably also the same reason why the 2330 Paddington to Cardiff (via. Bristol Temple Meads) runs - to get people back from London who have to leave late!

The reason given at the time with regards to the 2330 PAD - CDF via BRI was to give theatre goers an opportunity to travel back home afterwards. No doubt handy for late-night revellers for getting home I suspect. Whether the set then stays in Cardiff or goes ECS to Landore I don't know, assumed to be the latter.

Late night revellers going home at 2330?! I think they'd most likely be found on the first train of the morning! Most people I know don't even leave until about 2300 when going to a club.

I think though there's loads of reasons why a late night train would be busy from London to major cities (Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds have all been mentioned in this thread).

Late night/Early Morning trains to St Albans are often very busy on Friday/Saturday nights. Filling up 8 car sets...

Never used to run to Cardiff though, I know a couple of people who had booked a travelodge or similar in Cardiff for a 37 tour and missed the 2245 ex Pad (is that the last Swansea?) and had to do the 2330 which went as far as Bristol T M for a nice night walking around Bristol

I've not been on it myself but I've heard the 01:05 Waterloo to Southampton can be fairly busy considering the time.

Not everyone wants to travel early! I'm sure there are some people who appreciate a late train out of Euston. It means you can stay in the pub almost until closing time, and still be back in work, with a little bit of sleep in between, by 9 the next morning!

It's also useful for people who have been out to places like the Theatre or a Show in London. A friend of mine does this quite often and catches the 23.10 Leeds service off King's Cross, enabling him to get home - without that train, it would require a hotel in London.

EMT's 2315 STP- DBY via NOTTM is quite busy (or was when I went on it) on a Friday night. It was about to the point where people by themselves would not have anyone next to them and when if you were on a table and there was 1/2 of you there would not be anyone wanting to ocupy the other seats.

2343 Euston to Wolves is generally full of very sleepy looking people and the odd drunk, although it does empty out a bit by New Street.

Aye, only started in May 2007 IIRC.

And yep, 2245 is the last Swansea, M-F. Been on it so many times before when I lived there, was always mega useful.

I don't know, Im sure clubbers could use it, I've been on the 2310 BTM to Frome, which is usually slightly empty until Bath where a load of drunks fill up the train in no time
