Hi all,
I seem to remember it being reported that a 221 suffered from a fire whilst working the 0935 Ctr Eus, north of Mkc.
Does anyone know what caused it, and/or how bad it was? Is it being repaired or is it back in service? Thanks.

Not sure where your gen has come from, but 221144 has been out of service for some time as it is only formed of two driving vehicles, its centre cars now being part of 221142/3. Where was this report?

Oops I forgot that! It couldn't have been 144, It may not have been on Monday either, maybe towards the end of last week, but it was reported on here within one of the weather disruption threads. The OP would've got the 221 correct at the time.

144 was decommissioned so its centre cars could be used to expand the remaining 4 car 221's to 5 car and therefore standardising the fleet.

In vxc days when the voyagers were first introduced there were issues with the exhausts overheating the insulation (the exhausts are routed thru the vestibules opposite the toilet an ajacent to the saloon entrance doors) but believe this problem was addressed

Think the driving cars are now used for training in Crewe.

I knew it was a 22114x, just got them mixed up.

A fire was reported onboard 1A18 09:35 Chester to Euston at Bilsworth, between Rugby and Wolverton - All services were being diverted via Northampton, but this has been cleared now after 1A18 was got moving to terminate at Milton Keynes, 90 minutes late. 221143 was the unit involved.

Would that be the one that combusted on the Settle-Carlisle line and fubared the diversionary timetable one Sunday?

That was 221101 after it took a weekday emergency diversion over the S&C, it happened north of Lockerbie. I can't remember which 221 it was paired with.

Cheers, I could remember the incident but not which unit it was (hence the question).

The Train Management System detected a fire in the rear cab of the unit. Upon inspection, after the automated fire extinguisher system had discharged, there was found to be smoke in the cab but no signs of a fire. Though of course as the old saying goes, "there's no smoke without fire"!

It's a common word used in railway circles that means information. Though I have wondered before where it is derived from.

Thanks for that sprinterguy, that's very interesting. I've always wondered what the TMS does.

'Gen' derives from General Information, however, like a good portion of the English Language (think of things like 'bad' and 'mint', etc), it is often used for a different meaning.

The TMS effective runs the trains. It controls the screen displays, PA and automated announcements, Aircon, amongst other things and monitors the condition of the train such as speed, engine output, doors, listing any faults, service intervals and requirements. Even provide details on how to solve the faults. There is a screen in each cab, one in the galley/train managers office, one in the shop where they still exist and one in each other carriage behind a blackened glass panel opposite the toilet. Each carriage can show the state, or can be commanded to do a function, and you can select different carriages, whole train etc as you need. You can PA or crew call an individual carriage by selecting that carriage before pressing the pa or call button, or it will default to the whole train. Each individual reservation screen can be manually programmed to show a different message simply by selecting command. Turn the temperature up or down in a particular carriage by + or - 2deg. It is a pretty nifty piece of kit. I actually highly rate the voyagers TMS over any of the other TMS systems provided by adtranz or Siemens (which at speeds over 5mph locks out and is therefore useless) as it is so easy to use, in depth and controls everything!!!

The are 3 modes, D for driver which will only work in the cab with a driver key inserted, TM for train manager (which is the default mode) and MAINT for the travelling engineer or fitter which needs a password, and the TMS will display different information, particularly in fault reporting. Faults are graded by seriousness. Level 1 is a minor niggly, say a lightbulb blown, level 2 is a minor inconvenience, say a toilet out of use, and level 3 is major, say a door fault. If a level 3 fault occurs a low two tone sound plays over the PA 4 times quickly, it often sounds in relation to the disabled alarm activation (which is the two high pitched beeps heard three times) anomaly will list all faults and those that have been acknowledged will display steadily, while those that haven't will flash until they are, then by selecting that anomaly the TMS will then tell you how to deal with it.

Thank you very much Gimmea50anyday, I'm extremely happy and impressed with all the useful info you've given me about the TMS on 220/221s. :D
