If your main res pipe has ruptured if it can nick air from another vehicle then you leave the MRPIC open.
If it is a massive rupture and unable to move the entire train you would have to isolate or or even both to prevent total air lost on the train. Which would be the least of your problems to be honest, as you are ending up isolating brakes/parking brakes etc.
Not a good scenario.

Not always.
I've had a main res pipe crack and limped home with a wing and a prayer. Fortunately that unit had a compressor on each vehicle. It wasn't pretty and took a few compressor speed ups and near constant running of the power throughout.
I've also had a unit dead in the water as it only had one compressor, on the vehicle with the huge hole in the main res pipe.

How did you know there was a crack in the main res pipe?
I got under the unit, and after much messing about found it, could see air bubbles coming from it. I could hear the small bubbling noise when I shut down the unit. I tried to bodge a repair with mud/chewing gum and paper and limped back.
The properly FUBAR one was a hole the size of about a 5p. No fixing that one.
