Just looking on Real Train times and noticed that the 2158 Inverness-Thurso service from last night had an unusual headcode of 362X it was cancelled due to an unknown problem right enough but just interested if anyone actually knows what this working would have been, it was timed to 30MPH max! Also is it a daily or just occasional service???

It's a test train path (real headcode 3Q29).

Never been used though, as far as I know!

A test for a brand new sleeper train to be operated by the new sleeper franchise perhaps :D

yeah seems to make sense if thats what it is for but hopefully not at 30MPH maximum speed the whole route!!! :D Just kidding, what do you think would be the stopping pattern and how long it would take if say timetabled normally, I take it would attach with the sleeper at Inverness.

If it left Inverness in that path then there wouldn't be a sleeper for it to attach to...

The soutbound is long gone and the northbound is somewhere around Leighton Buzzard!

Ahh of course didnt quite think that one through did i now!

I would generally expect "test train" to mean an infrastructure testing train operated by NR or a contractor, not a test for a speculative new service! In any case, I suppose that (like the WHL route of the Fort William Sleeper portion) any Sleeper train to Thurso would be timed to make intermediate calls at least at some of the stations en-route, thereby making a truly overnight option lack feasibility. I have idly wondered about the possibility of an extension of the Caledonian Sleeper to either Thurso or Kyle of Lochalsh, but I certainly don't think the infrastructure would permit either, and neither would demand!

Totally in the relms of fantacy here but if that path was say 2 hours later you could start a consist on 1 sleaping car plus 2 seated coaches, 1 with micro buffet at Edinburgh, running to Aberdeen in the existing path of the evening departure that goes forward to Inverness then continue up the Far North through the night reaching THS in time for the morning boat to Orkney. ↲ *total fantacy*

hahaha i know it is a test train but i would say it is a slightly odd time but i suppose this had to be done at these timings due to the largely single track nature of the route. I see that the last service is at 2108 from Inverness and there is a 2330 service but to Tain only but this only runs on a Friday and Saturday only. Seems also slightly odd the return working was Wick-Thurso-Inverness as someone had pointed out which i did not at first notice but hey ho

Thinking it could be a service in the future???

Very unlikely that there is any demand for a passenger service. I cannot be sure about the practicalities of running freight services of any sort in that path.

However, perhaps it could be used in connection with the clearance of deep snow, albeit perhaps not for ploughing, if timed at 75mph and with those sorts of timings in general!
