20mph ; You Having A Laugh!

Hello everyone,

I was up in Derbyshire (the Motherland) at start of the week near the Erewash Valley line and on my way back down south went to have a closer look. I was very surprised to read a Network Rail sign that stated that the up / down slow line was restricted to 20 mph! The sign was placed very close to Love Lane (very close to West Houses) if that means anything to anyone. I was just wondering whether the the restriction applied for the whole of the length of the slow line (the track looked positively ancient compared to the fast lines)? Surely at that speed its no good to anyone?

on the erewash line i think the slow line speed limits are 45mph (the tracks that are used for freight trains for the mines) whilst for the main line used for the passenger services it is up to 80mph in places. However there is a long slow stretch between where the line branches off towards nottingham, and near langley mill of only around 45mph.

Perhaps the 20 mph restriction only applies to that bit of line then. The sign showed the fast lines at 80 mph (as you stated) but even then 80 mph seems rather slow. It looked as though the line had recently been resignalled and as i was walking along the footpath a 90 mph capable class 158 sped by. Incidentally a class 66 hauling coal empties went past in the same direction shortly afterwards which would suggest that the "slow" is something of a last resort!

I imagine that area is still pretty subject to mining subsidence even though they have closed?

It was because od subsidence that the Bennerley Viaduct was built of steel lattice wotrk I understand
