2026 Winter Weather in Portugal

As some of you may already know, Portugal (and Spain) are going through an atypical season of rain that has caused damage and disruption throughout the country.

The soil has become saturated with water and areas affected by wildfires during the summer are suffering from constant landslides. Dams are at capacity and the flow is at all-time highs in some rivers.

Paraphrasing the Portuguese Railway Company, at the moment (10AM February 11):

- North Line: Long-distance trains from the contingency plan are not expected to run in the morning. Regional services are operating between Entroncamento and Soure and between Tomar and Lisbon. Rail traffic between Cacia and Estarreja, on the Northern Line, has now been restored.
- Cascais Line: Trains are running with timetable alterations.
- Beira Alta Line: The Intercidades service between Coimbra and Guarda is operating using different rolling stock than usual.
- Douro Line: Service suspended between Régua and Pocinho.
- Oeste Line: Service suspended.
- Coimbra Urban Trains: Service suspended.
- Celta International Train: Afternoon services are not expected to run.

The Douro Lines remains closed all the way from Marco de Canaveses to Pocinho, due to unresolved land and rockslides from this Winter's storms.

Rail Replacement Buses between Marco de Canaveses and Peso da Régua continue as this stretch of the track remains under rail improvement works. From Régua to Pocinho there is no contingency plan in place.

In other parts of the country, as a result of the same storms, the Oeste Line and Beira Baixa Line are expected to be closed for, respectively, 9 and 6 months.
