Booked from the train (700027!) on Sunday evening, for £28, via the NRE website which automatically diverted me to LNE to buy the ticket. LNE sent me a message that their systems had flagged up a potentially fraudulent transaction, and my purchase was being delayed - I should contact them after two hours if they hadn't got back to me.

I identified this, probably correctly, as a petulant hissy-fit by their programmers/logarithms designed to frustrate someone trying to buy a ticket undercutting them which they might end up having to honour on one of their services in the not-totally-unlikely event of GC cancelling the train concerned. Therefore, about 80 minutes later, I bought a bar of chocolate in a grocers opposite West Ham tube station, and paid by card but stuck the card in the machine and entered my PIN rather than paying contactlessly.

Lo and behold, two minutes later I got confirmation that my booking had been accepted...

Have you considered repeated Chester to Flint trips on a North Wales two zone rover (zones F and W)? That, coupled with a Merseytravel Saveaway probably covers a good day's bashing round there. 12 and a bit miles from Chester to Flint.

Depends what the connection time is like at Flint. I'm trying to avoid doing endless Piccadilly - Airport leaps as that line gets boring quite quickly, but isn't the worst idea as I believe F + W is also valid Chester - Wrexham.

A two-zone North Wales Rover for Flintshire and Wrexham netted me two 230s and ten 197s on Tuesday, all for over ten miles, with trips out to Wrexham, Chirk and Flint, together with the Borderlands line. The connection time at Flint is quite good, and there is time to head out there to nearby shops for provisions. Another plus is validity in the morning peak.
