If Trump doesn't get in, he'll be the first president since George Bush Senior not to secure a second term in office. Dubya Senior lost out to Bill Clinton because of the economic effects of the Gulf War and the 1990 oil crisis.

Trump has an equally mamouth task too in helping to rebuild economic growth caused by Covid 19, which as a life long businessman he does seem to be an ideal candidate.

The main issue is that he has lost a lot of popularity since the last polls of 2016 and his rival comes across as a steady pair of hands during a time of a global crisis.

Except he isn't very good at that either. What he is very good at is being an unhinged and untrustworthy racist nut job.

A life long terrible businessman responsible for hundreds of bad decisions and plagued by multiple bankruptcies, none of which he seems to have learned from. On purely business terms I can't actually think of a worse candidate to guide an entire country through rebuilding its economy.

Unless you can give examples of his racism this is just frothing at the mouth stuff. The equivalent read by a US voter won't sway their mind. Calling people stupid doesn't persuade them to agree with you, but more usually the opposite. You'd have thought the past few years in Britain would have taught that.

  • The Central Park Five
  • Multiple lawsuits by the DoJ for racial discrimination in housing
  • Birtherism (x2 now with Kamala Harris)
  • "S***-hole countries"
  • Mexican immigrants are "murderers and rapists"
  • His attempts to repeal the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing amendment to the Fair Housing Act
  • His attacks on the Voting Rights Act
  • His refusal to disown the endorsement of David Duke in the 2016 election
  • "Very fine people on both sides" (one side had neo-Nazis)
  • His refusal to denounce White Supremacists in the first 2020 election debate

Let's not forget this corker.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/14/us/politics/trump-twitter-squad-congress.html

President Trump said on Sunday that a group of four minority congresswomen feuding with Speaker Nancy Pelosi should “go back” to the countries they came from rather than “loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States” how to run the government.

Wrapped inside that insult, which was widely established as a racist trope, was a factually inaccurate claim: Only one of the lawmakers was born outside the country.

She "won" the popular vote by " 2,868,686" She was sunk by the "USS Electoral college"

She lost the FPTP electoral college because her vote stayed home in the marginal states. The popular vote is meaningless in any FPTP election.

Is that actually possible?

It is when you want to claim a US$934m tax rebate because of all these "losses".

His refusal to denounce White Supremacists in the first 2020 election debate

He didn't just refuse to denounce white supremacists, he specifically referred to a group of white supremacists and told them to "stand back and stand by".

There was a thing going around in 2016 (whether its true or not i don't know) but if he had just put the multi-millions he had inherited from his Dad in the bank he would be a lot richer now thanks to interest than he is.

It was 100% true. If he had invested his share of his father's estate (c. $40M) in a S&P 500 index-linked fund in 1974 and just rolled it over the fund would be worth around $3.2B now. Estimates of his actual worth vary but it's probably something like $3B.

Trump confirmed to have tested positive for Covid. This election run-up is a real rollercoaster.
Now he'll have an opportunity to test those patent cures he promoted, disinfectant, bleach, - I'm sure that no expense will be spared to keep the saviour of right-wing domocracy healthy. :)

Yes, both he and his wife. I'm sure he already had it once before, but my dad stated he was tested for the virus about April time when he showed symptoms but it proved negative.

Do you mean your dad had the virus in April or are you saying that Trump had it in April and has just caught it again..?

What will happen if Trump (and I’m not expecting this to happen) is in intensive care on election day?
Has there ever been a similar scenario?

It's down to Congress to decide whether the election is delayed and if so, to when. Apparently this has never happened in US history.

Obviously Mr Trump not my dad.

It's still early days - the US election is about six weeks off. I'm assuming, the Trumps will have two weeks self isolation then still have plenty of time to resume the campaign trail.

Just under five weeks so a little closer than you think. And two weeks self isolation obviously presumes he doesn’t get any nasty symptoms.

I wonder how isolated he really will be though - can’t imagine he’ll be cooking his own cheeseburgers and getting his own Diet Coke somehow

The problem with this latest news is that it may invoke Trump to argue an unfair election if he loses the next term in office. I seem to remember one of the elections involving George W Bush was reviewed because of issues surrounding the voting counts (it was either the 2000 or 2004 US elections) - Dubya threw his rattle out of his pram. Trump may do the same - he was been forced to withdraw from public, so his rival has been able to make more inroads to gain popularity. It'll be an interesting one - I have a feeling Trump is not going to give up without a fight.

2000, the year of the Hanging Chad. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago. Here's a pic I took of the resulting demos in NYC a few days after that election.

He's been arguing it's an unfair election already with his paranoia about postal voting.

Yes mate - twenty years ago indeed. Dubya v Al Gore. I seem to remember Bush only won the election by a whisker - one of the closest presidential elections ever. Al Gore seemed to have a really good background having served as Bill Clinton's vice president. The only issue would have been how Gore dealt with 9/11 if he had been in charge.

The problem with arguing about an unfair election is that voters are in fact voting for electoral college representatives to elect the president. If (for example) Trump succumbs to the virus, it'd be unlikely that they'd rerun the election as any electoral college members who had been due to vote for him will just vote for whoever the republicans stand as a replacement.

A similarly broken system to the UK where whilst to all intents and purposes we vote for the leader of the party, we do in fact vote for somebody completely different
