Highlight - Impressive prospects in the franchises awarded this year, particularly ScotRail.
Lowlight - The awful spate of fatalities a few months ago.
Surprise - Like IanXC, probably HSTs to ScotRail.
Railtour - Haven't done one since September 2013  From what I'm told the BLS Trackers have been as superb as I remember their early ones being.
Introduction - West Coast back to Shrewsbury and Blackpool (OK, I struggled with that one!).
Best trip - 5 days in the Highlands, particularly the Kyle line and breathtaking trip across the Portree, the Far North line beyond Helmsdale (easily in my Top 3 in the country) and the Strathspey Railway.
Personal highlight - Finishing off the national network with Middlesbrough-Whitby back in late August.

Highlight - Getting promoted
Lowlight - Getting rejected
Surprise - Being able to exhibit my EMT Depot themed layout at Etches Park Open Day
Best trip - Going to Etches Park Open Day (with my layout)
Appliance of the year - Now this is a close one, there's a few good examples from Hotpoint this year but the winner has got to be the EMT 153

Bad Decision of the year: Joint between London Midland for reducing twitter service levels ,and Arriva Midlands South Wigston Depot for introducing brand new buses on a route inhabited by college kids (already covered in mud, all over the seats).

Well, here goes.

Highlight - Finally getting a job as a Conductor, after a couple of years in the booking office.

Surprise - I'm torn between HSTs for ScotRail, and the fact that the D78 diesel project has actually become a real thing.

Best Trip - My favourite trip of the year was two days in Wales, including using First on Gerald, a trip on the Welsh Highland and then finishing the Cambrian, which is an absolutely stunning line. I also happened to meet a certain 'Pink Bird' during the course of my trip ;)

Best Innovation - I'm really impressed with the 'D-Train' proposal from Viva Rail. As mentioned in the 'Surprise' it seemed like just a mad proposal, but the plans look quite good for a short term solution to the DMU shortage. We'll see if it makes 'Best Introduction' in a year or so :)

Can't think of any more for now, but I'll add more if I do.

Sorry to start on a downer but lowlight of the year for me personally has been having to flag so many trips, esp my planned bashing of the HOWL. Non rail related surprise of the year is to a certain extent related to the above and that was being offered a council flat on the 1st of April. Can anyone else on here stake a claim to that and if so did you believe it first time? I sure didnt!

Innovation award goes jointly to Lothian Buses andPrentice Coaches of Haddington. Lothians 104 Haddington>Edinburgh has put a much needed rocket up First Arse and whilst there not giving up yet its resulted in lower prices and a better qualitty travel experience for Lothians Pax as well as the freedom to go anywhere on LBs network for the same cost as a return. In Feb, Prentice launched commercially the X1 Raillink Haddington>Wallyford which sadly only lasted till August but was a great way of intigrating limmited stop bus with train and full creddit to Ross and the team for doing it!

Highlight of the year was an unexpected daytrip to Aberdeen on a hot sunny day in early July, returning home on the evening HST and on discovering most coaches had dodgy air con, walking down to the vestibule nearest the Buffet and standing with the window open and a cold bottle of Sider (or 3) for 2.5hrs - bliss.

Shock of the year - How totally crap the 350/4's have been. Its well known that I dont like any Diziro old or new however I had, as a regular user of the Northern end of the WCML been looking forward to them as (I hoped) a better train than the 185s and given the work out of the box introduction of previous builds I had every confidence in this one. Well here we are nearly a year on from the day I bashed the first TPE 350 working from Glasgow (and got badly delayed by flooding) and there entry to service has been almost as bad as the cursed 380s, with one result being Transport Scotland went for the bidder with a different train design idea when awarding Scotrails new franchise.

Runner up in the above award would be Serco for Sleapers - Really? Seriusly? I hope Im wrong but given what they do best i.e. Spend as little as possible and run things down, combined with the shambles they have created with there other major Scottish transport contract (Northlink Ferries, which is a Lifeline Service) we should be ready for a serious farse!

Franchising news of the year - Joint First Prize to Abellio Scotrail (very different and promising), Northerns Extention/Direct Award (one of my fave TOCs) and Virgin Trains East Coast - the group will be very, very good with it!

Highlight of the year - joining the railways!
Lowlight of the year - having to cancel a first class all line rover, due to the above reason!
Surprise of the year - (joining the railways!) not sure, probably will go for the HSTs going to the Scotrail franchise!
Railtour of the year - Haven't been on any, actually!
Best introduction/innovation - Refurbishment of the 365s on the GN side of things as they are brilliant trains, but looking a bit shabby by now!
Your best trip of the year - My FoSW rover from the absolute start of the year, especially as I was so excited I forgot to change out of my work uniform and forgot to pack any trousers so had to trawl Penzance in the morning!
Either that or the "holiday" I recently had to Birmingham, where I started my new job in the middle of it! Started out going via Holyhead using the WAG express which was an amazing experience :)
