Less than six of the 8,760 hours of the year 2011 remain to those of us observing GMT (i.e. the vast majority), so I thought it would make for a good time to do a bit of reflecting.

Highs...

• Finally leaving Great Britain on my own, and what a "holiday" it was (even if it was predominantly for bashing purposes). I have never enjoyed a week as much as I enjoyed the time in Ireland and on over-the-top return leg. Not to mention experiencing the amazing 80 Class, and of course my cab ride in Carrickfergus! If only I had known the Queen's itinerary for her first day in Dublin, given it was also the day I was there...

• Finally achieving recognition from my University that I do know the odd thing or two about buses, and as such sitting in on a meeting with First Somerset & Avon.Since then I have done quite a lot of work for the Students' Union, and have created a potential timetable for our buses next year. This obvously isnt that muc of high, but it's nice to finally get noticed for this - and to actually put a long-term hobby to good use!

• Setting the World Record for the fastest ever completion of the Docklands Light Railway network, even if it did last for only a week and thus did not result in a certificate or similar. The Travelcard I used for the journey still sits in my ticket wallet to this day, behind my Railcard.

Lows...

• Depression, and being on the verge of suicide back in February. At one stage the only thing that stopped me from going out and carrying out my plan was feeling so low that I couldn't even motivate myself to kill myself! That takes some doing! On a more serious note though, the whole episode has put me back a full 12 months in my life as far as work is concerned.

• The Day Everything Went Wrong - October 28th. Six letters of complaint and only two that produced an at least satisfactory response, one of which wasn't really a response at all. Still feeling the financial cost of that day in having to buy more stamps for further letters!

• Being stuck in Southend on a very small budget for twelve weeks wasn't exactly nice. On the rare occasion I did get out, something almost always went wrong - most notably, I almost got stranded in Holyhead! Only some intuitive thinking - and a payphone - got me out of a very difficult situation...

Overall, for me 2011 has not been too bad for the most part, but the dent in it is so serious that would probably be third from bottom in any imaginary list of "best years of my life" (beating only 2006 and 2007). 2012 should beat it without too much trouble, but we'll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, what has happened on a macro scale? Well... not much that can be considered positive. The Arabian uprisings, the riots, drought, the Eurozone and the odd strike have all caused major problems on a global or otherwise at least national level, but there have been some good things. For us for instance, we had the St David's Day announcement about the GWML, while on a more prominent scale several enemies of the West have also been lost in Bin Laden, Gaddafi and Jong-Il. Lastly, we also lost one of the country's greatest entertainers in Sir Jimmy Saville, but also one of its most prominent - if controversial - role models in Amy Winehouse.

That's enough of me I think. Any comments anyone else would like to add? I haven't said anything on sport for instance...

2011 has certainly been one of my better recent years (Left school five years ago, so anything before then don't really count as I was only a kid )

I have got a half decent job, started to pay off my debt (stupid credit cards <().

Next year, hopefully I will get either a few more hours at my present workplace or a job with slightly better pay benefits which will allow me to fast track paying off my debt and then be able to move into my own flat (again).

I am looking forward to 2012.

P.S. I hope I haven't jinxed anything for me by writing out what I would like. :p

The best I can say about 2011 is that it was better than 2010. But we have survived, and can look forward with blind optimism.

2011 job related went well and 2012 going to be even busier with a forthcoming new venture.
had a 4th grandchild, which was nice, I am blessed with them all
meeting two great new friends

Lows
medically wise ending the year on a low and 2012 will be a challenge
never having enough time to fit everything in.

Resolutions
More reading
more journeys
more time with friends
learning the drums
being me more

But Happy New year to all and whatever your passions, desires or dreams are for 2012 I hope many of them come true.

not much good 'appening? Getting rid of the good Colonel Gadaffi was a step in the right direction. And I'm pleased to see that i seem to have been right all along about what I said about the Euro. And who knows, maybe David Cameroon will be ousted in a coup led by Nick "Clegg", who has secretly been waiting all along for his moment, and will reveal himself to be the new Oliver Cromwell and disband parliament and declare himself Lord Protector. Or something. And talking of which, perhaps someone in the Freightliner diagramming office will get confused and roster the wrong 70013 one day. These are my predictions for the new Year.
And perhaps the Government will decide that they can't afford the Olympics, and call it off.

Overall I'd say 2011 has been pretty good.

Probably the highest point would be graduating from uni earlier in the year with a 1st Class Honours (especially as I didn't expect to do so well) and I also got involved with something which I haven't been able to do properly since leaving school which I used to love being involved with so that has been good too.

This year (in April more specifically) was my first time meeting people from here on RUK (in spite of being a member here since 2009) and have since then been on a few other meets too and made some friends here. Hopefully I can get to meet a few more people in 2012 as well :)

There have been a few lower points, but it is to be expected really.

Bring on 2012 :)

Well in terms of bashing, my highlights have been discussed in the thread titled, surprisingly enough, Techniquest's Annual Review 2011, found by clicking this link http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=56433. I had a few months which went rather wrong, but since then it's been a damn good year.

Plenty to work on in 2012 too, that I missed doing this year for reasons varied, like getting on with buying a Flickr subscription and sorting out my photos. Also getting my laptop sorted and dealing with my videos for YouTube.

Complete re-hash of post...

It's not even 22:30 on New Year's Eve but I've already had four PMs from people wish me a happy 2012! Thank you people

My response will come in a post in the New Year...

2011 got progressively better for me, ending with a new job (subject to medical on Tuesday), a new man (not that there was an old one in the first place) and having made 3 new good friends in particular.

Lows are 2 deranged women who have blocked me from their husbands' FB accounts (I've known both guys for over 20 years and no reason for this...)

2012 has been interesting already... another deranged wife! Ah well! I must be doing something wrong!

2011 was great for bashing, utterly awful for everything else.

The best I can say about 2011 is that it was better than 2010.

2011 was a bit better than 2010, which was a year I'd rather forget. An uncertain situation at work for about 6 months, one of our managers committing suicide and being made redundant in Oct 2010. In 2011 I've only been on temporary contracts with job applications mostly not getting too far.

However I'm almost in with a TOC having passed the assessments, I/v and medical and my CRB check has been done. Now awaiting references then hopefully start in about 4-5 weeks all going well. Here hoping for a better 2012.

Ok its slightly late but 2011 has been okish for me although things could be better.

Completed university but I still am struggling for work.

Seen my predictions for Veolia are proving correct I.e they will pull out of the transport industry completly (Hard to believe I used to work for them.)

What I hope for in 2012:

1.) Go ahead given for electrificationn of the Cardiff Valley lines as well as expansion of the GWML electrifcation for example to Swansea, Cheltenham etc.

2.) Continued investment in rail infrastructure and rolling stock.
3.) Bi-mode IEP is scrapped with only full electric versions being ordered and a alternative is found for the London - Worcester/Hereford services.

4.) Perhaps a return of the loco hauled trains on the Cardiff - Taunton route to free up some class 150's to provide a further boost in capacity around the FGW network. (Very unlikely but we can wish)

5.) Get a job, its boring sitting around looking for work and not having much money to actually do many trips.

6.) ROSCO's and DFT to get their act together over refurbishing/rebuilding the 15x series of dmu's to meets DDA beyond 2020. (I am aware porterbrook has come up with a plan for the class 156's but I have heard nothing else about the rest of the 15x series)

7.) WG come up with away to provide much needed capacity on the ATW network and annouce plans to extend the Ebbw Vale branch to Ebbw Vale town and start date for a Ebbw Vale - Newport service.

8.)Brush manages to sort out the reliabilty issues with the class 180's

2011 has been a good year, at times it's been frustrating as I've made various friends (more than I have here) who are all around a certain area of the country, and it's a £50 train ticket away, so I've felt a bit trapped in Devon in times to be honest.

On the up side, I went to London for the first time (), making aforementioned friends and not seeing as often as I want is certainly miles better than not having them at all, I won a POTW which was certainly nice, and I had many enjoyable trips, so all in all, 7/10 I reckon.

Don't worry, you can still go to Crich to see some of them! They appear to be taking over the fleet there!
