20 Years Since

On the 16 of August 2011 it will be 20 years since the 504's retired, is anyone doing anything for this occasion, does anyone think the Metrolink should do any specials for this.
For the rest of the year im going to be heading on the line a couple of times a month and then all day on the 16 of August.

Does anyone think Metrolink will do any specials for 20 years since there services began.

Metrolink services started on 6 April 1992, not 1991, so the anniversary isn't until next year, and there are some plans being made to celebrate the occasion I believe.

It will be nice if the occasion is celebrated. With the current expansion of the system by TfGM, they surely will be aware of this anniversary and use it with public relations in mind.

I was on the first tram from Altrincham to Manchester in public service. It does not seem to be that long ago...but it was, evidentially. :roll:

I still remember the fact that Altrincham had an "express" diesel unit service(from Chester) that only stopped at Sale, before reaching Manchester, in the morning rush-hour.

Hmm, the class 504s only ran (and only could run) on the Bury line, so I fear there is some misunderstanding of the OP here...

Yes the altrincham line shut down for refurb after last train 24/12/91.

The 504s didn't go to Altringham only from Victoria to Bury, and from memory August 1991 would be right for the 504 withdrawal as that line was closed first as more work was required to convert it into a Metrolink line than the Altringham line, as for doing anything special unless there will be any events involving the preserved units I wouldn't expect anything until the 20 year anniversary of the Metrolink opening next year.

It is pronounced AltrinGham, just spelt with a C. Go to some of the older churches in the town and you'll find headstones with it spelt with a G!!

I think that ALTRINCHAM, as written, looks far more refined, and as such, reflects the aspirational tendancies of many who reside there.

There was a similar occurence of gentification many years ago when the name BUXWORTH took over from BUGSWORTH. This area is well known for its canal basin. However, the reversion back to BUGSWORTH has occured in some places there.
