I think you will find there will be no more 66's built as they no longer meet strict Euro emmissions laws and I can't see class 70 production increased anytime soon.

It is a shame to see another loco go off to the depot in the sky, however this one and it's partner look like they have been out of use for quite some time. Any idea how long they have been sat there?

GB I don't mean to go off topic here but I didn't know that about the 66s and the emissions regulations, are they really that "un-environmentally friendly" or is it a case of the regulations getting tougher again. Because for a design which is only 12-13 years old I thought that they could resume production, not just that but what now would replace the current stock that has not been replaced by the 66s.

Legislation getting tougher again.
Not sure what legislation covers railways, but take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standards for how much tougher car emissions have to be.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 20s have been sat stored since 1994ish, they are still wearing BR Blue...

Thanks for the link, Emissions standards are always on the increase but I just figured that was a UK only thing (since cars over 25 years old don't have to pay road tax but most will fail the emissions on the MOT not counting classics).

I agree about the length of time they have been out though since they are in Rail Blue, I was thinking maybe they had been picked up by a preservation group which folded or something. Either way I figured sometime after '96 or so.

They belong to HNRC, he would have stripped anything usefull off them as spares for the more recent class 20's hes getting up together for a return to the mainline which includes some ex preserved examples and some ex DRS ones.

However it is sad to see a loco as old as this one go for scrap having survived so long after being withdrawn.

I have fond memories of a railtour to Weymouth behind 20032 and 20007 in 1992. There's a shot of these two covering Eastleigh with a cloud of clag in the Locomaster Profiles video / DVD 'Power Hour 1'.

At least 20007 is still with us at GCR (North).

I suspect that that railtour may have been one of the last workings for 20007 and 20032, as as far as I can tell by 1993 they were stored at Toton, before moving to MoD Kineton for storage. Like many other 20/0s, they were bought up by DRS in the late nineties, presumably to provide spare parts for the class 20/3 refurbishment programme (Many of them spent some time in the works yard at Doncaster), before they passed to the ownership of HNRC, by which time they were already in a very dilapidated condition and stripped of parts: I saw them in 2004, stored in the open at MoD Longtown in Cumbria, and it was pretty clear then that many of those locos would never run again. After another seven years, their condition can only have deteriorated further.

They have been stored since around 1993/94. All the 20s at London Marston (20016/032/057/072/081/088/092/902-904) are all either at a Scrap Site or will head for scrap soon. I know HNRC are getting a fleet of 20s ready for hire contracts and main line use.

Particularly sad to see a 20 with discs scrapped. My second favourite traction after the Deltics.
