2 travel cards?

hi. Looking for some advice on the following please
I travel from Oxted to London Bridge with Southern/Thameslink and then via tube to Canary Wharf
An annual season ticket to London Terminals plus zones 1-6 is around £3200
But my train always stops at East Croydon.
Could I buy a rail season ticket from OXT to EC and then use a separate zone 1-6 TFL travel card to cover my journey from EC (zone 5) to LBG (zone 1) and on to Canary Wharf (zone 2)?
Those two travel cards total around £2500 - considerably less than the combined travel card.
There’s no legal requirement to touch in/out with a travel card so I can’t see why this approach is not valid

Yes you could, but youve done your sums wrong - a zone 5-1 travelcard is over 2000GBP in itself. You could save money but possibly lose your sanity by going Oxted-East Croydon-New Cross Gate-Canada Water-Canary Wharf and avoid going via zone 1 to save you a few quid. You will need the zone 1 because travelcards/oyster fares are based on the zones you pass through, not the final destination.

Thanks. The TFL fare calculator seems to have a bug. I used a zone 5 to zone 2 journey in the calculator. The result lists the travel card as being valid for zones 1-6. If I change the journey to being Z5 to Z1 the daily travel card prices are exactly the same but the weekly/monthly/yearly jump in price
The difference will be because one calculation isn’t assuming the journey takes in Z1 but why is the result saying “valid for zones 1-6?” And why are the daily prices the same for both journey types? Bug in the calculator?

I see the issue. There is no daily TC for zones 2-6 so it shows the 1-6 as the only option for dailies. There is a weekly/monthly/yearly for Z2-6 only though, so it shows prices for those options. What it doesn’t do is actually supply any of that detail in the results.
