I have a query regarding this railcard. As peak time is from 04:30 onwards and the railcard is not valid before 09:30 would there be an exception which would allow travel on the 04:28 Glasgow - Preston service? I note the terms and conditions state travel is not valid between 04:30 and 09:30 and as my journey departs 2 minutes before hand does this make it valid?

It makes it valid for the first two minutes. In practical terms the 0430 start is to allow the use of tickets for the previous day up to their point of expiry at 0429.

I was under the impression if a train departed before said time it made it valid?
That would be the case if the restriction was ‘not valid for trains departing between 04:30 and 09:30’, but the terms & conditions explicitly state;

‘Discounted tickets are not valid for travel between 04:30 – 09:29 hours, Monday to Friday, except on Public Holidays.’

It very much depends on the wording. In this case the discount is not valid between 0430 and 0929 regardless of the booked departure time of the train.

I have noticed the online journey planner allows you to purchase and obtain a seat reservation for the 04:28 service using the railcard

Which one?
I was scrolling through the section and entered Glasgow - Preston for Tuesday. This ticket is for 2 pax using the 2T railcard. It gives the option to purchase a £56 off peak single ticket solely for this service and no others until after 09:30

Which one?
I tried Avanti, ScotRail and LNER

Does this mean the ticket is valid using the 2T Railcard on this early morning service?

I can confirm that Avanti's journey planner is offering Off Peak Singles totalling £56.40 for two adults using a Two-Together Railcard for the OP's itinerary. Notably, the Ticket Information associated with the itinerary describes the restriction as "Not valid on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 09:30" and lists the Two-Together Railcard as being valid for the ticket - suggesting that they are interpreting the restriction differently.

Does this mean the ticket is valid using the 2T Railcard on this early morning service?
If you able to obtain a ticket and itinerary together from an accredited retailer (as all those TOCs are) then your ticket is valid. You may have to argue this point with staff, however.

Given that TOC staff read this forum, there is also no guarantee that this anomaly will continue exist.

I have obtained a reply from both Avanti and TPE stating the ticket is valid on both their 04:22 TPE and 04:28 VT departure

It's not intended to be valid but if you have an itinerary then it must be accepted. That said I wold not expect a hassle free journey.

Now that this anomaly has been highlighted on here I expect it will be fixed in due course.

Looking, I see the 2 Together railcard is valid on the Caledonian Sleeper (seated accomodation only)...

Southern offer it for Thameslink trains Gatwick to Bedord running through 0430...

My assumption has always been that such temporal non-validity (in this case between 0430 & 0930) was always based on the (scheduled) start time of your journey - and often assumed that there would be no services running at the start of the non-validity period - which was often in the early hours when 'yesterday's trains' had finished, and today's hadn't started.

Methinks at times the railway's wording on such restrictions can be rather loose.

If on the other hand, the non-validity period is strict not valid for travel in this period, then there is always the risk of tickets becoming non valid if train happened to run late...

And if it is, a random question - what is the earliest train on which a 2 Together ticket would not be valid on the grounds that arrival will not be until after 0430?

Its a strange one this as you have also accepted the t&c and therefore explicitly accepted that the railcard is not valid between these times.

What would take precedence?

I have contacted 3 TOCs via social media and all of them state the ticket is valid. As the train departs before 04:30 I can't really see an issue

You've told the booking engine what Railcard you have. If it deems that this makes you eligible for a Railcard discount on the 04:22/04:28, that's contractually binding.

I have made enquiries and been advised that the restriction is correctly applied to your ticket, and the wording should be read as excluding travel starting between 04:30 and 09:30. Having said that, I'm not sure how grey that area would be if you had a change of trains involved!

So we can confirm the two together railcard is valid on the 04:28 service from Glasgow - Preston?

I suspect we would be relying on the word ‘journey’ here. A ‘journey’ starting between those times is prohibited. Of course, there’s no definition for journey but it is still constant.

So it seems it IS allowed, but you may wish to have access to your replies from operators and the information above from Haywain incase you find a member of railway staff who doesn’t understand the rules. I’m sorry to say, you may also need to prepare yourself for buying a new full priced ticket and the associated hassle with refunding it afterwards but hopefully your journey will go smoothly. I wouldn’t like to guess the odds nowadays.
