1. I often miss the xx31 from Wigan North Western to Leyland. Is my ticket valid on the xx38 to Preston then xx04 from Preston to Leyland? Saving 37 mins without waiting for the next direct train? Is there a via Preston ticket or would 2 tickets be needed? 2. Horwich Parkway to Euxton B Lane. NRE tells me to travel on the 2013 to Preston and then 2104 from Preston to Euxton. Is this valid via Preston? Northerns 2049 departure to leyland arrives at 2112 where's the train to Euxton leaves at 2109 ( Liverpool lime st ) I hold a 460 anytime day return with young persons railcard. Cheers.

1. I am not being offered a single ticket for Wigan to Leyland via Preston. With a railcard, a Wigan-Preston day return is £4.95 compared with £4.35 for a Wigan-Leyland return (bearing in mind that railcard discounts only apply after 10am Monday-Friday except in the summer months).
2. I would say not. In the Routeing Guide, Easement 700033 says that journeys via Chorley to Leyland may not doubleback via Preston. And I am not being offered a single ticket for the 2013 via Preston.

2. I am being offered a 375 anytime day single from Horwich to Euxton on the weekdays 2013 from Horwich on 1 ticket. Can someone please look and clarify this for me please. The 2013 says to change at Preston

2. I now see that it depends where you look: National Rail Enquiries, and the Northernrail and Virgin Trains websites, show the ticket as valid via Preston, whereas the East Coast website shows it as not valid. Given that, kwvr45's advice about taking an itinerary seems a wise precaution.

East Coast is technically correct. The others are in error. It would be interesting to see what the booking office systems make of it.
Is this because of the long wait at leyland on some journeys? Leaving on the northern departures from Horwich at 1954 and 2049 leaves a wait of 51 mins and 1 hour 36 at leyland. But if I travel via Preston (tpe) on the 2013 I make the 2104 departure for Liverpool to Euxton arriving at 2114. Does this happen a lot where NRE routes you a way not valid to save time? I notice to travel via Bolton and Wigan 2 tickets are required.
But as NRE is now the definitive source of information, surely that must be correct?
Yes you would think. It routes me via Preston without stating that I want to go via Preston. When i tell it via Preston it offers the same fare of £3.75 single with YPR

Does the above have anything to do with it? The 1 hour 36 min wait at leyland if travelling on the 2049 from Horwich would be terrible?

I am of the opinion that Horwich Parkway to Euxton Balshaw Lane is most definitely valid via Preston, provided that travel is on direct trains from the origin to Preston and from Preston to the destination, in either direction.
Page F7 in Section F of the Routeing Guide - The National Routeing Guide in Detail - tells us that,
Preston is a common routeing point for both Horwich Parkway and Euxton Balshaw Lane. Via Preston however ceases to be a permitted route if travel is not on direct trains to/from Preston from/to the origin/destination.
This is reiterated on Page F12 of the same document.
I don't think this easement is relevant, as the journey from/to Horwich Parkway to/from Euston Balshaw Lane is neither to nor from Leyland.

Ahhh right I see what your saying now. So I understand, would what you have said apply only at certain times of the day? During the day northern offer a departure from Horwich at xx24 arriving leyland xx42, then surely I would be required to change at leyland for the xx09 from leyland to Euxton. Northern call leyland, tpe don't, but like I said at night the xx24 from Horwich to leyland doesn't run so it tells me to travel on the 2013 to Preston. Is there any other examples of this? And again is time of day relevant?

I don't think the time of day matters, as long as you are on direct trains to/from Preston.
