2-Part Return.

An obvious question to many, I have done a search, honest, and can't find the answer.

If I'm issued with a "2-Part Return" ticket, can I bin the outward part of the ticket at the completion of my outward journey, or, strictly speaking, should I retain both parts until completion of my total journey?

Yes you can (and if travelling to a barriered station, it would be swallowed anyway).

The outward is only valid with the return however. You'd only usually be asked for it with an Anytime Return, if travelling after the first day of validity.

Yes, that's fine (indeed there are certain journeys where it's cheaper to buy a return from B to A and throw away the outward than it is to buy a single from A to B). Technically you need to be in posession of the return half to make the outward half valid but not vice versa. For example the outward half may have been retained by a ticket barrier at your destination.

Hmm, barriers can retain the outward portion. Usually, you would only be asked to show the return portion. (I've never been asked to show the other portion on an outward and return journey).

A very few guards will ask to see the unused return portion when you present an outbound portion, but this generally only arises if you're using an Anytime Return other than on the first day of its validity (as mentioned above). Reason being some unscrupulous folks are trying to use Anytime Returns in lieu of season tickets and relying on not getting gripped (or the ticket not getting marked).

Yes, the Outward portion is only valid for travel if a completely unused Return half of the same ticket can be shown with it at the time of travel.

Back in the 1980s misuse was the very reason that the 3 month validity on standard return tickets was scrapped.

Recently, there has been a substantial increase in successful prosecutions of the unscrupulous travellers attempting to re-use anytime return tickets.
