221144s driving cars are there because the centre cars were placed it 142 and 143 so Virgin had a standard fleet of 5 car 221s. Last year it was possible to it thundering up and down the WCML at 125mph, so yes it is a train!

Out of interest, how have Virgin managed to train any staff over the last decade without a spare Voyager sitting around not earning revenue?

Gentlemen, gentlemen the Oxford Dictionary says that a train is: (noun) a series of connected railway carriages or wagons moved by a locomotive or by integral motors.

Now 114 might not be in service hauling around passengers it is still most certainly railway carriages powered by integral motors therefore I would say it's a train. Now it might be being used for training purposes but it is still a train.

Edited posts ;)

You didn't miss much don't worry, only some guy that apparantly works for VT at the Training centre saying that 221 144 was infact not a train...

I think I got the beginning of that earlier. Hopefully this thread will have a tidy up then, and we can get back on with moaning about the bad use of stock ;)

Yes, Class 142, Class 143, Class 144, Class 150, Class 155, Class 156, Class 158, Class 165, Class 170

More even, Class 171, Class 172 and Class 456. It would be interesting to find out what proportion of GB's rail fleet is in 2 car formation.

As a rough rule of thumb, about 1,400 multiple unit carriages out of a total of 12,000 vehicles are in two carriage formation.

I thought 221 144 was being used as a unit to haul other Voyagers around CZ.
I saw this at Crewe pushed up against the buffer stops behind 57 314 pn Tuesday.

221144 as a two car set cannot work on its own or used to strengthen another set.

It has a very noisy compressor rigged up in the luggage compartment.

If it could move on its own it would not tilt, the master tilt computer is on the 608 vehicle which is not present.

Whether or not tilt is operative on a 221 the hydraulic tilt system still has to be pressurized, controlled by the master tilt computer, if it's not then the vehicles can go off center causing a center detect fault. If you get one of them then it's out of service at a maximum of 40 mph which causes chaos on a 125 mph railway.

The only way i can think of to circumvent the above would be to do what cross country have done to their 221s and fit a steal bar to ensure the vehicle stays upright then the tilt system which is no longer required can be permanently isolated, the system would be de-pressurized and a center detect fault would never happen.

That's my view as a driver, if anybody can elaborate or correct me please feel free.
