1st midweek train from Newquay

why is this train so late midweek at 10:07 ?? Does nobody work in cornwall

There used to be an earlier train but it was so lightly used it was withdrawn a few years ago. As a rule the local branch trains see very light patronage, only on the busiest holiday dates does it get busy.

I cannot recall the year it was withdrawn (2012?) but there used to be an earlier departure from Par connecting with the down sleeper train. The reason given for its withdrawal was something to do with providing an all year Sunday service rather bizarrely- something I have never fully figured out.

The early train still runs on Saturdays in the winter.

I was curious as I’m heading down there next week for a week away and I wanted to jump on the train to Penzance for the day but I thought I’d get out early and go exploring but then I see first train 10:07 but I’m still gonna go as I still get 7 odd hrs in Penzance many thanks for the info

The main reason was the early train was withdrawn was to use the unit to work a 0628 Exeter to Par to cater for commuters to Plymouth and which was possible due to the very light loadings on the Branch as has already been mentioned.

I appreciate the info re low usage of the earlier service, but given the growth of Newquay and overall growth in general I think it needs to be revisited. Even better if services could go direct to Plymouth.

A suggestion to get around the late start of services if you’re going west. Catch the bus to Truro using the ride Cornwall ticket, which covers both trains and buses. We did that when going to St Ives and Looe, can just about do it in one day from Newquay.

Are there any early indications as to the changes expected in January for Cornwall?

Most of the local work is in Newquay, so it is a place people go to in the morning rather than from. The branch doesn't really go anywhere (no offence to Par) so it involves a change there for most people, making it less attractive and a longer journey.

And as previously said, there is the "Ride Cornwall" ticket which gives bus and train travel.

Nothing concrete however there are suggestions locally that the planned timetable changes may be deferred due to lack of resources.

Or get a bus to St Austell where the bus station is right beside the railway station.

As a local from Newquay, I believe we should have an earlier service on a Weekday definitely.
