We're looking to upgrade a LNER journey from kings cross to Edinburgh, either via seatfrog or paying when on board. One of the party is a 4 year old, who can travel without a ticket in standard class.

How does it work with seats if we upgrade? Will the 4yo get a seat or have to sit on someone's lap, and will we need to pay the upgrade charge for them

It works the same as in standard. No ticket or upgrade required for 4 and under as long as they do not occupy a seat which is required by another paying passenger.

Thanks! If 1st class is full he'd be on one of our laps, then? But would save the price of a ticket/upgrade :)

They won't make you pay, unless you insist he has his own seat.

When you first go seat him on your lap then if there's clearly space then there won't be a problem him sitting on his own seat.

In real life a 4yo isn't going to sit in an adult's lap, just take a free seat for the kid and to hell with it. If it means someone else can't upgrade on the day that's too bad.
