1st class ticket Wilmslow to Manchester?

Hi,

If I want to travel in 1st class from Wilmslow to Manchester on Avanti, what ticket is best to buy?

There is no 1st class fare available point-to-point.

BRFares shows that the First Anytime Day Single should be £9.80 with the First Anytime Day Return £18.60.

Oh, d’oh. I know the problem.

I was trying to price using a railcard that doesn’t allow flexible 1st class.

(In my defence, it’s a bit confusing that booking engines including Trainline, and Brfares, don’t show any fares at all when you specify said railcard - you’d think at least they’d at least offer the £9.80 undiscounted option?)

I was about to suggest Standard Premium but there are apparently no SP upgrades priced between Wilmslow and Manchester

I've never had food or drink on a first class ticket Wilmslow-Manchester. In the up direction the staff usually come round after Stockport, which is too late, and are invisible in the down direction (or they’re scurrying around ‘tidying’).
I used to use the Virgin-only (then Avanti-only) fares which started out at a discount but which now exist to trap the unwary and extort money. The Avanti-only day return, in particular, is now £18.70 versus the "any permitted" fare set by Northern which is valid on many more trains (admittedly mainly without first class accommodation) for 10p less at £18.60. It used to be priced at around £10.

Anyway, if you want the experience, buy the cheaper ticket and think about going via Manchester Airport in one direction also.

Trainline, and all others as far as I know, will in general offer the fare for a train with first class. It could be a problem with Avanti's mandatory reservation and no quota left for the first class fares. On the other hand, BR Fares isn't trying to sell you anything, it's just the facts
