1st class Southall to Basingstoke

Good evening all,

I'm planning to travel from Southall to Basingstoke and back the same day (off-peak), but want the flexibility to travel via Paddington and Reading or via Waterloo. There's no fare from STL to BSK route any permitted, just rte Reading, or rte Not Reading. So I'm thinking of the following combination with a DSB railcard:

London Zones 1-6 Inboundary Day Travelcard OTF £12.55 (issued from Upper Warlingham; nice to see it back again!)
Boundary Zone 6 to Overton rte any permitted FRX £22.70

As the Boundary Zone 6 to BSK rte Reading is FCR £30.55, does this mean that the Boundary Zone 6 to Overton rte Any Permitted FRX is therefore not valid via RDG?

Am I missing something?

If both routes do exist, buy the cheaper and pay the excess in the relevant direction only.

The BZ6 to BSK fare is an irrelevance when considering the validity of a BZ6 to OVR fare.

It is valid via Reading because the shortest route between West Drayton and Overton is via Reading.

My mistake Yorkie, the STL to BSK route is indeed Reading not London. I was thinking of the London Terminals to BSK fare which has both routes, but not an Any Permitted route.

Are tickets to stations west of BSK on the Salisbury line automatically permitted via RDG if route Any Permitted?

There are definitely route Any Permitted tickets from London Terminals to Basingstoke.

No. You need to look each up in turn. You are likely to find very similar results though with close by stations.

I'm not sure where to look each up: are you referring to the Routing Guide? BR fares is my source of fares info, but "any permitted" isn't defined there.

Officially you're supposed to calculate the shortest distance using the National Rail Timetable. However, this is very inconvenient and slow to use, not to mention the fact that it rounds to the nearest quarter mile, which can make a critical difference in some cases!

I find bukitlawang.com/routes a simple and easy to use tool for calculating mileages. It gives both the shortest route + ≤3 miles according to the National Rail Timetable data as well as the actually accurate RJIS data used by booking engines.
