Hi all. If I travel from St Pancras to East Croydon using my oyster card and travel in 1st class how does the Oyster reader know what to charge?

You can't use oyster in first class. Its a standard class product. If you sit in first and are ticket checked you may get a penalty fare.

Oyster cannot deal with first class at all.
You would require a paper ticket. There is no upgrade path that allows paying the difference either.
