I am travelling on the Sleeper on a 1st Class ticket next week and so I will be able to use the 1st class lounge at Aberdeen. My question is: Can a member of my family who is dropping me off at the station buy a 1st class single to Dyce (nearest station) for £1.80 (with SRC) and join me in the lounge? Will the staff get uppity about it?

It depends on the rules for that particular 1st class lounge-usually any 1st class ticket can be used providing it's valid on the same TOC that operates the lounge.

In this case if it's Scotrail then it could work but there could be rules about the lounge only been for customers with tickets for the sleeper service-as for staff not liking it that could be the case even if it's valid but tough!

Sure others will be along to provide more information on this.

I'm definately allowed to use the 1st class lounge as I have a 1st class sleeper berth ticket. Went past the office yesterday and it said that EC 1st Advance tickets weren't valid but there wasn't a minumum fare for other tickets - so I guess the £1.80 1st single to Dyce should be OK? In that case it's a "cheap" cup of tea and pastries etc! Is it a nice Lounge - I've never been in.

You could always ask them on the night, and before you buy the ticket. You can board the sleeper from 2110, or 2050 on a Sunday, so may not have to wait for long.

EC 1st Advance tickets can be made valid for an extra £5 on purchase, but yes, an FDS to the first EC stop has to admit you to the lounge. Same story with people at Birmingham International buying a Virgin Trns Only FDS to Coventry without any intention of travelling anywhere.

Tickets not valid on ScotRail services cannot be used in the First Class Lounge at Aberdeen, therefore EC 1st Advance would not be acceptable. An FDS provided it is 'Any Permitted' is fine.

The service to Dyce is operated by Scotrail so shouldn't cause any problems....
