I have a rather unusual scenario from my recent travels, which I need some clarification about.

Earlier today, I had a 1st advance ticket with seat reservation for the 13:14 TPE service from Lancaster - Edinburgh. However, due to a 'coupling issue' at Manchester, the train only consisted of coaches A-C (the booked seat was in coach D, of course). As well as being very much unable to get to my seat, the train was naturally completely crammed full with 6 coaches worth of passengers in 3 coaches, and I had to stand the length of the journey.

I am aware some compensation claims can be made for some tickets where a seat cannot be provided, but does this apply to advance tickets? And is it worth the trouble pursuing it for a ticket I bought for £9.55 two months ago?

Many thanks.

I would certainly think that you would be able to get a full refund:

FTPE Passenger Charter said:
If we do not provide you with your reserved seat, and there is no alternative seat available, we will compensate you. If you have to stand we will refund you 50% of the single leg cost of your journey in National Rail travel vouchers.

Thank you both for the advice.

Another quick query - I was delayed on my outward journey (Wed 22/12) by a failed train at Penrith. The TPE service was cancelled at Carlisle, but my advance ticket was accepted on the next southbound Virgin service from Carlisle to Lancaster. AFAIK all trains down the WCML were blocked for a long time, and I arrived into Lancaster at 13:55, while the TPE service was scheduled to arrive at 12:26. This delay caused me to miss a ferry, although I was re-booked onto the next one at no additional cost (very understanding people at the IoM Steam Packet) does the 1h29 delay allow a refund on the outward advance ticket too?

Cheers

From the charter linked to above:
