Hi, I was on 1S87 from Preston to Glasgow on 09/08/2017 which calls at Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell and Glasgow Central.

It was all normal until Lockerbie, when I realised that we were going way too fast as we approached, emergency brakes on, flew through at about 70-90mph, stopped after the station with all coaches off, I assume we had already passed the signal as we didn't reverse, but continued up to Motherwell and Glasgow. Does anyone know why this would've happened? (We were going at over 100mph as we approached Lockerbie). RTT also shows that we stopped there as planned.

Drivers can forget where they’re meant to be calling at. We’re all human. Reversing might have been an issue depending what was in front/behind you

Not terribly surprising seeing as Virgin rarely call at Lockerbie, as has been said, everyone is human, even drivers, and it can take a moment's lapse in concentration to forget that you need to start slowing down... and then it's too late...!

Plus whether there was a level crossing (without checking Quail) - basically a 200 m set back is the maximum , where agreed , and with a change ends obviously. (not a case of slamming train into reverse with head out of the cab window !)

Try 400m (440 yards) and you'll be correct.

Unless an Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) is not locally controlled, then you're stuffed.

Even if you didn't foul a signalling section, I assume in these days of black boxes someone will be asking you to explain?

I remember back in the 1990s we had a train miss Market Rasen station by about 50 metres. Driver just reversed, collected and carried on. I am sure no-one needed to know. (but probably got much flak when the gaurd mentioned in the mess room)

I believe we may have passed the signal, but the only thing behind us was 1S90 which was 20 minutes behind.

The driver would be expected to self-report the issue, and any failure to do so could be taken more seriously than the original incident (depending on a number of factors). Obviously the onboard recording equipment would pick up some interesting things like the braking actions, but that's hardly the point.

As for passing a signal, it may or may not be relevant, and it's likely it will not have been passed at danger (because what is now the national network has long refrained from time-interval signalling, since a disaster a very long time ago, the timetable does not decide if a signal is red at a station where a train needs to stop). You might be looking at a relief driver required in situ if there had been a combined fail-to-call and SPAD at those speeds.

Lockerbie misses were a lot more common in BR days when the service consisted entirely of InterCity trains, now at least just about everything is provided by TPE.

I know someone who was returning to the area from university in Edinburgh but went by at 100mph. Her dad reported a face and a pot plant go past in a blur in the vestibule of a mk2. He then drove to Carlisle to collect her...

They weren't always that keen to stop the next returning service either, I know another person who was told he was going to have to wait for three hours at Carlisle to get back again. To which he said 'when's the next train to Glasgow, I think you'll find it'll stop at Lockerbie?' And it did.

Wonder how the Lockerbie passengers got back ? If this was late at night ? Taxi from Motherwell down to Lockerbie

Could be. My old examples all involved people ending up in Carlisle rather than the north, so a slightly different problem to solve.

It's also worth pointing out that only a tiny proportion of people using Lockerbie station have that town as their final destination, it's very much the main line railhead for the whole region, so someone inconveniently stuck in Motherwell could be wanting to go to Castle Douglas or Kirkcudbright. Really quite annoying if it happens to you.

Virgin paid a taxi for the 6 passengers to return to Lockerbie from Glasgow Central, as VT dont have staff based at Motherwell. 2 passengers that I spoke to had to go to Dumfries from Lockerbie aswell.
