0730 Cardiff-Portsmouth is booked to be a 5-car set until Bristol Temple Meads with just the 158 continuing to Portsmouth.

Never knew that, cheers. I take it it's for commuters, given the time it would get into Bristol. I thought they were 3 car 158s throughout, but learn something new everyday eh?

Yeh, that one is very busy in to Bristol with commuters. The 0600 Portsmouth-Cardiff has a 153 attached between Westbury and Bristol, again because of the busy loadings at that time. There aren't any pairs of units in the evenings any more, there are more services in the Westbury direction than in the morning, and the load is spread over more trains in the Cardiff direction. The 1630 Cardiff-Portsmouth did used to have a 150 attached at Bristol, which worked throughout to Portsmouth, where the sets split with the 150 working the 2120 Portsmouth-Westbury. Saturdays and Sundays does see more use of 150s coupled to 158s on the Portsmouth-Cardiff routes as the fleet has more slack in at weekends.
