1930s station signs. Help required.

I hope this is in the right place. If not I'm sure the mods can put it where it belongs.

I'm working on a play that involves a train journey from London to Edinburgh. It's set in the 1930s and I need to find out the correct station sign types/colours for Darlington, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley at that time.

Am I correct in thinking they would be the totem style sign or would they be something else?

If they're totem signs, I would guess that the Darlington, York and Newcastle signs would be orange totems and the Waverley one light blue on white.

Any help much appreciated.

The orange (NE region) / blue (Scottish region) signs and the 'totem' style were introduced by British Railways, which was formed in 1948, so it certainly won't be those.

I expect that photos of trains at those stations in the 1930s will exist - I'm not that expert on things LNER so don't have any to hand.

It suggests that pre-1937, station signs were white letters on a black background

A painting specification dated 1924 mentions a thin black line separating the brown & cream on timber buildings where the bottom 4' 6" of the walls was painted brown. Internally the brown was used up to dado level, above which stone paint or terra cotta or green distemper could be used on the walls. Station signs were black with white lettering.
