I think a few people are failing to spot the joke here...?
It's a local agreement between ASLEF Euston and VTWC. Otherwise footplate crew would have to remain on board until works attention.

Talking of hooks, what about the metal rod that the driver can use to raise/lower the pantographs if the auto mechanism fails

It's a legacy of Branson being a massive Dukes of Hazzard fan and an homage to 1970s TV (why else do you think that there were Thunderbirds?)
The plan was that drivers would leap through the window a la Bo Duke before departure and the horn was going to play Dixie.
The DFT rejected it on account of the Confederate flag livery being considered unacceptable and concerns about hot pants (rather than hot boxes) as well as the fire risk associated. Rumours that the DFT were upset about Boss Hogg/Rosco Coltrane comparison are unconfirmed.
The problem is that by the time DFT rejected it, it was too late to put in the doors. If you go down to Willesden in the morning you can see drivers leaping through windows but it has to be done in the shed and is all very hush hush.
