Got on this between Huddersfield and Leeds today; coach C (First class) was leading and I noticed that the front end between the windscreen and the coupler had a large indentation and some paint missing. Anyone know how this damage was sustained?

Also, why are the 185s numbered in the 185101-151 series and not 185001-051?

I think you'll find that the indentation is at roughly the height that someone's head would have been had they been standing on the track when a train approached.

185118 has been running round in a similar state for the past few weeks. It may be repaired by now but wasn't as of last weekend.

I believe the numbering is to do with the carriage numbers clashing with diesel locomotive numbers but I may be wrong.

I would be very surprised if a person made that damage. It looks like something very heavy has caused it.

Thanks,
Ross

I don't agree. I think, very sadly, a persons head could have done that easily if the train was going even moderately fast. That will be part of a crumple zone I guess. If something very heavy did it the train was hardly moving and neither was the very heavy thing.

I saw the left hand light cluster and cab side of a GA DVT somewhat caved in and backwards after hitting a person.

Even hitting a bird can break a light cluster, plastic or a window.

Have you actually seen what happens to the front of a train doing a decent speed when it hits a person?

When I had my fatality it damaged something on the compressor line and also opened a dump cock.Same at Surbiton when I went to assist a train involved in a fatality.(Had to take the two Bournemouth drivers off,one was route learning)...and took the train to Waterloo.
Also when I worked at Ilford as a cleaner many years ago a slammer class 302 came in which I guess had been in a fatality (they didn't tell us) and the wooden stepboard had been split/damaged.

When I had my fatality the lifeguard was pushed that far back it was virtually touching the leading wheel.

Hey, I didn't say it in spite. Last time I checked, it wasn't a good thing to have witnessed..
You've all made your points and I thank you all for correcting me ;)

Thanks,
Ross
