A productive day in the West Midlands Mr J.

Could you PM me details of that cheaper ticket to Chester as I might make use of it this coming weekend (going from Stafford to Chester on Sunday)

‘The Next Stop By Request Will Be...!’ 26/02/18

Today was pencilled in as a Northern day ranger, however with no real ‘plan' as such. I've recently worked out that there are just 22 stations within 100 miles of me that I still need to board and alight at, 2 more I just need to board at, and one where I need to alight. So that was roughly on the agenda for today. (None are Northern shacks, but I can use the ticket to get to Lincoln/Nottingham ect...) As you can imagine, me being me, I got none! Oh well.

I hurried off to the bus stop, concerned that I was going to miss the bus, the train or both! One of Network Warrington's Cadets, 74, was taking me round to the station today-a dud bus unfortunately.

I hadn't missed my train. Of course not. It’s Northern! The ticket office was closed too-which was very bad news. Thankfully it was only temporary as G4S were in to take the cash. As the train was late (every cloud, eh?) I handed over a tenner and got my ticket. Duds 156421+150272 rolled in working the Manchester Oxford Road service which I boarded and sat in the ‘posh train'. An RPI (I think) passed through who I knew, we had a bit of a chat when she saw my ticket. A passenger across the aisle asked for an Irlam-Chorlton Metrolink return, which the RPI couldn't sell as she didn't know which Metrolink zone to issue it to. I have seen maps in ticket offices with the zones for each tram stop on. (For instance, I KNOW Bury is Zone A) but never seen anything in the public domain. Is there anything out there as it'd be bloody useful! We arrived into Occy Road only a couple of minutes late. I headed straight over to platform 4, not so easy now ‘Our' platform has been stolen by the Ordsall Chord services!

Duds 158813+158852 took me 43 chains up the line to Piccadilly, where I now had a very tight connection. But thankfully Network Rail had been helpful and put the Hope Valley stopper on platform 12! That'd be nice eh? Nope! Platform 1 as usual... I rushed down to platform 1 and saw a horrid sight. 150111! Where's my pacer!!??? I took a seat, distinctly unimpressed, and off we went. A grip took place after Reddish North, with the guard spotting my yellow RMT badge and thanking me for my support. No problem at all! I never leave the house without it... (I mean, there's pictures of me hanging off the side on a San Francisco tram wearing it!)

The guard proved his worth after New Mills when an old bloke approached him and said he'd got on the wrong train and needed to know what to do. The guard initially said ‘get off at Chinley' but then realised that we were the next train back, and wasn't (rightfully so) willing to leave him out in the cold for nearly 2 hours. He was told to stay onboard to Sheffield and back. Quite a detour! I had an idea at around Edale to go and veg some trams when I reached Sheffield. After initially being given duff gen, it was confirmed that the 399s were indeed in service. I purchased a Plusbus from the guard for £2.65 and began to mentally re-familiarise myself with Suburban Sheffield. (Part of me was tempted to get on a FirstBus in Doncaster with my (valid!) Sheffield Plusbus on bog paper and see what reaction I got!)

Upon arrival in Sheffield, the first thing I did was go for a PNB as the onboard facility was locked out. On an intercity journey... seriously? And it was COLD. I was genuinely wondering if my rear had frozen to the bog seat at first! After watching a couple of dud vomiters departing, I headed t'trams.
Dud (original fleet cleared) 123 was taken on a Malin Bridge service. We got as far as Cathedral and I spotted something in the distance. Is it...? Yep! 399204 was heading straight for me on a Meadowhall service. In the book you go! I must say I'm a big fan of these new trams! They're great! The seats are much better than I'd been led to believe too, which was even better. I stayed onboard all the way to Meadowhall and then back to Carbrook. If you're from Warrington, hearing the stop announced as ‘...for Ikea' means you have to get off and get meatballs! First Ikea in the country y'know!

Or that was the plan. 399202 just departed Carbrook as I bailed. I couldn't let that go could I! So after a cold 10 minutes I boarded 399202 and went back as far as Arena. It had started really snowing by this point, but none of it was sticking. 102 took me back to ‘Carbrook for Ikea' and off I went! I must admit I was rather disappointed with it. The entrance was very poorly signposted from the tram stop, and when I did eventually find it, the normal door was out of order and the revolving door wasn't revolving as it had been smashed. In Warrington, the restaurant is by the exit. However in Sheffield it's on the top floor, and again not well signed. The queue wasn't particularly long, but the service was very slow. I got a seat by the window which had an excellent view of Meadowhall and flurries of snow coming down-the meatballs and chips were standard Ikea scran really! I took the lift down to the ‘exit’-which wasn't the exit at all, it was the entrance to the store! After getting lost in the compulsory confusing maze that is the Ikea showroom, I eventually got back outside.

After a cold 8 minutes, ex-stalker 120 rolled in. I wasn't happy about that, but I wasn't waiting another 10 minutes! I bailed out at Fitzalan Square, I'd been told there were 2 Citylinks on Yellow route and 1 on purple route. There was a purple tram due, but a Duewag produced so I flagged it. I hopped onto 101 up to Castle Square, as there are no PIS Screens at Fitzalan Square. I boarded 107 on a Halfway service, planning to intercept the Citylink en route. The climb out of Sheffield City Centre on a Blue Route tram is quite something, and is without a doubt my favourite Light Rail route in the UK. (And I've done all of them outside the TfL empire!) I worked out I could make it to Spring Lane, any further meant risking missing the tram and venturing into Manor Top, which I've been warned on a couple of occasions is somewhere to avoid.

I played it safe and bailed at Spring Lane, and crossed over to wait 3 minutes. I was distinctly unimpressed by the sight of my Citylink having morphed into a Duewag! GRR! Red pen denied... I boarded an empty 122 back to Sheffield station to go back to the trains. I had a few options to play with here, however I eventually settled on the Bridlington service formed of 158795. I wanted to go for Creswell, my nearest required shack, but the connection at Worksop was just too poor for the weather. And I didn't really want to go on the Lincoln line for reasons which will be revealed soon...

I'd bagged myself a table seat on this rather cool 158 and settled in for a long trip up to Beverley. That was until around Conisborough where-after having been sat on the train for nearly half an hour, I still couldn't feel my fingers or toes! No way was I willing to stay on that 158! Unfortunately the Bobbies didn't want to play ball... We arrived outside Donny about 2 minutes early, yet we were held to let THREE VTECs pass, 2 of which were stopping at Donny anyway-and were late, and a GWR IET. That was the first time I'd seen an IET in the flesh, and I like what I see! I get the idea of ‘Beardy wants, Beardy gets', which is certainly true on the WCML, but to hold us for nearly 10 minutes which caused us and a Newcastle XC behind us to be delayed? Nope. We're Class 1 passenger, the train behind was too. Not long after arriving at Donny, whilst considering my options, I was deafened by a GC 180 heading to Bradford. Hmm.... it was ex GWR 180106, which was a winner. The guard kindly let me on, which was appreciated by my phone battery! I also can't remember ever having done the route from Donny to Pontefract before either, which was a nice bonus-and something a bit different!

I'd asked for Brighouse-thinking I'd head to Leeds, but I remembered some gen I'd had earlier and bailed at Mirfield instead. I needed to get to the right side of the Pennines, pronto. Off I went at Mirfield and headed over to platform 1 via the main road to catch the Huddersfield train. Then felt like a complete and utter tit as I realise the Huddersfield train went from Platform 3-EXACTLY where I'd just come from! Doh!

I got back over in time, and a very well loaded 144007 bounced in. After a mass exodus, I boarded and sat down. I had a 6 minute connection at Huddersfield, which I had to make. We didn't lose any time and I made it no trouble at all. Yay! Even better, 142003+150101 were forming the semi fast service back to Manchester. This service runs non stop from Marsden to StalyVegas, which was good fun. 17:45 came and went, no sign of action... ‘Kin TPE running late! So because TPE can't run a train on time, we got held and left about 6 late. Balls to my 4 minute connection then...

The driver tried. He really did. But it wasn't quite enough and I arrived into Manchester Victoria to see the tail lights of my connecting service departing. That's inconvenient! I went for some scran and headed over to platform 5 to catch the Clitheroe service. I took refuge on a Liverpool bound 319 and had a catch up with the guard until that train's departure time. 150117 had arrived now so I moved over there. The bog was locked out as it had flooded half the carriage. Once the guard had arranged for a cleaner to come and mop up, I made my request to alight at Entwistle. This particular guard has a habit of appearing whenever I'm doing something out of the ordinary! When I went for the 2 hourly shacks on the Southport line (no, not THAT one!) He dropped me off at New Lane, picked me up at Bescar Lane and dropped me off at Hoscar!

But why had I suddenly rushed back from West Yorkshire to a random shack in the middle of Lancashire? Well that, my friends is simple. I put my arm out to flag down 150129, one of the recent ex GWR 150s. That's my Northern unit requirements dealt with! (Again) I had planned to do this train back to Manchester, but upon seeing the Preston train was late, I bailed at Bolton and headed for that. 156423+156489 were provided, and had a decent number of passengers on. A couple of people near me were going to Glasgow, which is a long journey at that time! After some phone charge at Preston, I headed over to platform 2 for the York train-almost missing it in the process. A nearly empty refurbished 158753 was working the service. The more I travel on these refurb 158s, the more I seem to like them! I absolutely hated them at first though, mainly as they were so underwhelming compared to what Northern had promised.

We ran all shacks to Blackburn, where I bailed to get an empty 158816 back to Preston. The non stop run was a lot quicker than the all shacks slog I'd just done, that's for sure! I had 15 minutes until the Manchester Airport service which-due to the delay to a TPE service, was carrying just 5 passengers on the non stop diverted run to Manchester. The thrash from 156451+156426 was top notch, quite literally, and we reached Manchester a couple of minutes early. It was very cold when I alighted, and the 10 minute wait for 156421+150222 to arrive felt like torture! Thankfully the 156 was nice and warm for the uneventful (with the exception of our on time arrival) trip back to Birchwood. I know it was a Monday night, but unusually I was the only one to alight!

I was very glad of my bed at the end of that surprisingly long and productive day!

IIRC you can't gain direct access to platform 12 from the footbridge, the only access is via the main concourse, which if there is a queue at the ticket checkers can be a bit annoying ;)

*wonders if Jamie needs this 158 ;)*

You can by the lift! I was thinking of Platform 11 anyway...

And that's dud from a Kingussie-Aviemore leap

At least you have (newish) local stock to hunt down when more 150/1s arrive ;)
150101, 150120, 150122, 150123, 150124 and 150129 have all worked on Northern metals so far, and I've had all of them.

Apologies for sounding thick, but when you mention a ‘Northern Day Ranger’ is this something that covers all Northern trains? I can find mention of it on their website, only the specific area Rangers. Thanks.

They run it as a promotion occasionally. You have to collect 2/3 (it varies) tokens from either Johnston Press or Trinity Mirror newspapers, download a form from the Northern website and then take that to a ticket office. The ticket you get is called 'Northern Only Day Ranger' and costs £10.

The Beast From the East-A Day To Forget' 27/02/18

Firstly, I acknowledge that this report is quite a bit later than I intended it to be. I'd nearly finished it, then my tablet decided it didn’t want to save it-and I didn't have the mental willpower to either type it all up again, or to re-live this day for a while! And secondly, I might get a bit ranty later on... I'll see how it goes...
I was glad of my bed after alighting from the last train the night before, and had in fact spent much of the walk home debating whether to go ahead with today's plan-given the arrival of The Beast From the East was imminent. Of course, true Northern tight-fistedness trumped all (I was NOT wasting that £5.35 advance home!) and off I went. The amount of snow on the ground, and still falling caused me to say something I can't type here-bearing in mind I live in an area sheltered by the Pennines so we get very little snow. I walked to the station through it, noting that the snow seemed very ‘powdery' (as had been mentioned on here). I arrived at the station after the usual panic that I was going to miss the train at about 6AM, so in good time for the 06:08.

I had a few tight connections to make, so couldn't really afford many delays. I met an RPI I used to know really well at the station who I've not seen for ages, and we both boarded ex GWR dud 150122 for the all shacks journey into Manchester Piccadilly, the only direct Northern train to Piccadilly from Birchwood. We had a catch up, a couple of Family and Friends vouchers changed hands and he wished me luck with my plan-saying something which later turned out to be very significant indeed...

There was a signal failure near Cornbrook tram stop, so we arrived into Piccadilly just under 15 late. I hadn't missed my connection, but I had missed my breakfast! I managed to get a sausage roll and couple of hash browns from Sainsbury's. Not quite a footlong mega melt, but there you go. It was scran and it was edible-could be worse... the 07:08 Sheffield stopper was from platform 1. Yet again, for the second day in a row, I had a rancid 150! At least the bog worked on dud 150103 today. The train was very lightly loaded, the guard soon appeared to look at my complimentary single, and the journey proceeded uneventfully-apart from being held at the junction south of New Mills to let a late running TPE fly past.

The scenery of the Hope Valley coated in snow was, as expected, beautiful. The train got gradually busier along the way and by Dore every seat seemed to be taken with just a couple of standees. I wouldn't mind a morning peak like that! We were a few minutes late, but nothing to make me miss the Lincoln connection. I'd had no mobile data signal at all since Manchester, so I was hoping for 144012. Dud 144004 produced, and a quick glance at the wifi at Sheffield station did little to indicate the cause of the problem. I don't know whether it's the fact that I've always just come immediately off the Hope Valley stopper, but I find the Sheffield-Lincoln route quite dull and uninspiring. Especially between Sheffield and Retford, unless I'm getting off at Worksop for a Full English that is! Unfortunately today I had no time to do so, with hindsight I could have phoned ahead and asked if they could meet the train with a bacon butty-they probably would!

Admittedly, I do like the section between Gainsborough and Lincoln. The weather seemed to have absolutely no idea what to do here! Some fields were coated in snow, then a few seconds later we were bouncing past fields that hadn't been touched-then immediately back into a snowstorm!

Arrival into Lincoln Central was thankfully on time, as I needed to buy a Lincolnshire Day Ranger and only had 13 minutes. An RTV and some change was handed over for what I feel to be quite an overpriced ticket and off I went to my Peterborough dogbox. Good start, winner 153355. I don't use EMT 153s that often-only really when a winner escapes to Scouseland. This particular 153 had no fold down tables at the airline seats for some reason, is that normal for EMT? Wouldn't fancy Liverpool-Norwich with nowhere to put anything down!

The ride down to Sleaford was longer than expected, and very picturesque in the snow. We didn't pick up or lose many passengers at Ruskington or Metheringham, however quite a large amount of passengers (relatively) bailed at Sleaford. I had around 20 minutes until the Nottingham train was due, which I was after as it stopped at the sparsely served Ancaster. (Though what isn't sparsely served round here...) I took a seat in the waiting room and wondered if the Gent sat opposite with a large camera was a forum member (If you are, say hello!) I had 2 hours and 21 minutes to waste at Ancaster, so I'd come prepared to spend a bit of time outside. Dud 158774 provided the thrash for the 10 minute or so journey from Sleaford along yet more required track. I decided to have a PNB before I alighted, as I didn't expect to find any facilities once I did.

A quick look on Google Maps above this pretty looking village showed a pub at the end of the station approach. Sound! That'd get expensive, but in the circumstances I didn't really care. Slight problem though... it was shut! Balls! I went for a wander into the village and found a Post Office. Shut! Google showed a Co-Op so I found that. It was at that point I began to wish I was a sterotypical woman... there's only so many times a bloke can walk round a (relatively small) shop! It was rather warm in there too. I eventually chose what flavour crisps I wanted, got a drink, paid and left. I returned to the shack at around midday, still 1hr 45 minutes before my train. Sat in the shelter with the sun shining directly on you was actually quite pleasant. I therefore sat back eating my Walkers Sensations Chilli flavour crisps and tried to get as comfortable as I could. When the sun went behind the clouds however, it was bitterly cold.
I put my extra jumper on (which never actually came off for the rest of the day!) And braced myself for the incoming snowstorm. The visibilty down the line began to decrease rapidly, so I could tell this would be quite heavy. And it was! The shelter did a very poor job of keeping the snow out, and I soon began to look like a snowman. It passed after about 20 minutes, and I took the opportunity to walk round the platform for a few minutes. I was perfectly comfortable on the whole, however I'd been sat on a metal bench for over an hour-my arse was frozen! After what felt like an eternity, the train arrived. But it wasn't the 158 I was expecting, no it was a single dogbox! 153302 was dud unfortunately, I scored this on a South Parkway-Widnes move during the Lime Street blockade. Either way, as long as it got me to Heckington it'd do me. I had a 2 minute connection, so I was (naturally) concerned that the connection wouldn't make.

My concerns were completely unfounded thankfully, I hopped off thanking the guard who’d informed me due to the track layout I couldn't miss it-and that the 158 I was expecting had sat down at Nottingham. Dud 156413 was my unit back to Sleaford. I'd have liked to have gone to Grantham and picked up the other unit there, but I'd have missed it so I bailed out at Sleaford again. I had 40 minutes here, so there was only one thing to do: Spoons!

The pub wasn't very busy, which was good as I got served straight away. It had just started to snow again as I entered, which was kind of a welcome sight. I took the opportunity to have a PNB before returning to the station for the main aim of my trip. Skegness! The 14:52 service was running about 5 minutes late, but 156415 soon arrived. 156415 was my last EMT 156, and it was scored on a Lime Street-South Parkway leap, so I was kind of glad to see it as I'd be adding a lot more miles to it now! I made myself comfy at a table in the front coach for the ride out to the coast. I've been meaning to do the Skegness line for ages, and was very glad I was finally getting it ticked off! I suspect you can see where I'm going with this...

Not long after departure from Sleaford we stopped. The guard was very quick to explain that there was a ‘technical issue' in Heckington signal box (admittedly the incident of the bobby being locked in the bog in the Worcester area (IIRC?) Immediately sprung to mind! ) but we'd be moving shortly. True to his word, we were. (Which admittedly kind of backed up my theory!) Departure from Heckington was about 10 late, which by all accounts having my time in SkegVegas reduced was only a good thing!

I had my Baker Atlas out trying to keep rough track (sorry...) of our progress-and to try and spot the ‘twice a day' shacks at Swineshead, Hubberts Bridge, Thorpe Culvert and Havenhouse-with Havenhouse being my destination. We proceeded along as normal, passed Swineshead with no indication anything was wrong-but soon began to slow down. And stopped. The guard explained that we were a few miles outside Boston, a freight train (which had also been delayed at Heckington) was reversing into the Docks, and due to the track layout, we couldn't proceed until it had done so-but he didn't envisage us being here very long...

15 minutes later, we were told that the points had frozen and the signals had failed. I still wasn't too concerned as all this delay was doing was reducing my fester at Havenhouse! The sight of the guard passing through the train checking how many passengers were onboard and our intended destinations however was much more concerning, and the first indication that something was seriously wrong. Whilst he was inside the carriage, he mentioned that they were looking into the possibility of getting taxis for us if it looked like a long delay, and he was being proactive. He also mentioned that he'd obtained permission to draw into Hubberts Bridge station and release the doors once a Nottingham bound train had passed. I learnt something new about signalling there as I was unaware (though it makes sense) that the train couldn't enter Hubberts Bridge station with the platform starter signal at danger due to the single line onwards from there. (I'd have got on the Nottingham train back to Swineshead if that'd been an option available to me!)

When we arrived at Hubberts Bridge, I was initially ecstatic as I could potentially score both Hubberts Bridge and Havenhouse! If the taxis arrived fairly quickly, I could get to Havenhouse and pick up the 17:51 to Skegness. I can hear those of you that know my shack scratching rules having a fit over that idea-however a taxi paid for on railway accounts is technically a train service, so it still counts! The taxis were ordered for the 20 passengers onboard at 16:10, I still wasn't too concerned. Apparently it would take 42 minutes to reach Havenhouse by road, so if the taxis arrived soon, I'd scored a bonus shack! The traincrew kept making announcements and passing through the train, both updating us with what little news they were getting and checking everyone was ok-the temperature was noticeably dropping now. The traincrew were fantastic, the guard inbetween using the PA was on the phone to the taxi company every 5 minutes and was seemingly being lied to. ‘They're 10 minutes away mate’ yeah, that wears a bit thin after half an hour!

The phone call the guard recieved at around 16:40 was from EMT Control. Both the driver and guard were extremely unhappy at the order they'd just been given, but had little choice but to go ahead with it. They'd been told to chuck us off at Hubberts Bridge and run empty back to (I believe) Sleaford and restart the service in it's normal path! With hindsight, the option to return back to Sleaford, Grantham ect really should have been offered but, alas, it wasn't. Admittedly, I never thought to ask-but still. We were told to alight the train at 16:45 onto the barren, desolate shack of Hubberts Bridge.

Buzz buzz. And off the train goes. Of course, it hadn't snowed since leaving Sleaford but it would start now we'd been left stranded with the promise of taxis (which few of us had confidence would materialise anytime soon) wouldn't it. There were at least 3 young children and a couple of elderly people amongst us, simply stood waiting in the -2° chill. Some twenty five minutes after being detrained, two taxis arrived. Just 2. The drivers seemed surprised at how many of us there were and had to ring for back-up. I was amongst the 5 left behind, we of course made sure the most vulnerable amongst us went first. Us 5 were all intending to go to Skegness, as I could still make the 18:00 Skegness-Nottingham if we got going soon.

But we didn't. Another train arrived 5 minutes later, the guard told us to get on as it wasn't quite as cold onboard-which actually didn't seem to be the case! I decided to abandon my journey to Skegness at that point, something which I've not had to do for a very long time. The guard told me to simply stay on his train. One of our little group suggested that we should have refused to get off the other train, as it was plainly obvious to anyone but control that we were being de-trained in one of the least appropriate places I’ve ever been to. At 17:24, the guard came over and told us that a taxi had arrived for Skegness. We wished each other good luck and off they went. When you hear stories of trains being stuck for ages (mainly when trains get stuck overnight admittedly) in very poor conditions and people talk of the ‘Dunkirk Spirit', it's very real! You all know you’re in it together so you Keep Calm and Carry On.

15 minutes later, I heard a noise which I was starting to think I wouldn't hear again. Buzz Buzz. The line was clear! The guard had to ring and cancel the taxis for the people on train I was now on, 156404, but we were off! I've never been so glad to be moving! I bailed at Boston, some 2 hours 33 minutes late. The guard invited me to stay on to Skegness, not knowing I had a ranger anyway, but doing so would have made me miss my booked train home so I had to frustratingly decline that offer. There was a driver on the platform who told me the next Nottingham train wasn't likely for 40 minutes. My heart dropped. I couldn't stand on a platform for that long, I was FAR too cold! Reassuringly, he said that the unit would arrive shortly and shunt round. The other platform was fairly busy unsurprisingly.

I was sat on 156413 about 10 minutes later, both the driver and guard passed through the train checking everyone knew their journeys, connections ect. The guard even came through sharing his own mint humbugs, which was a really nice-and very well appreciated gesture! Someone sat on the next table up from me was travelling to Liverpool, the driver had mentally taken the stance of ‘hmm... good luck!’ I saved him a job and piped up telling the passenger to simply stick with me, and gave train times. I moved to join him, and on the table opposite, there was a passenger travelling to Birmingham and another travelling to Newcastle! I see now why the crew came to check connections for everyone...

The 4 of us all sat together chatting, there was a lot of ‘I'll shake your hand but my hand is frozen’ going on, unsurprisingly! They seemed in awe of my ability to just fire off gen on connections, stations and the railway as a whole. The travelling time back to Nottingham was about an hour and a half and didn't it drag! Rattling over endless jointed track in the pitch black certainly felt very ‘Coming home from the Heart of Wales'-ey. The unit was absolutely freezing, and I was still unable to feel my fingers or toes by Nottingham! Both myself and the passenger going to Liverpool had the same idea whilst on the train. FOOD. We headed up to the Co-Op and sourced supplies. After a mental rant at the lack of Cheesy Mix-Ups, a chose a different flavour and some adult beverages (I'd spent however many hours travelling across the country (literally) specifically intending to go to Skegness. And never got there. I had a lot of sorrows to drown!)

Our next move was the 20:47 Northern service to Sheffield, via Derby. We were kept outside dud 158907 for a very long time, more so than normal. I soon worked out why. We had a Sheffield traincrew, and Sheffield Wednesday were playing! I saw the reflection of a TV screen from the messroom. Departure was slightly delayed as there was an issue near Derby. Here we go again eh? The decision was made to avoid Derby and divert, the guard checked there was no one for Derbados onboard and we set off about 6 minutes late. I had my Baker back out praying we’d go via Toton. But would I be so lucky after the ordeal I’d just been through? Hahaha of course not!

At least I could tick Ilkeston, Langley Mill and Alfreton off for passing through non-stop. Is anything booked to pass these stations? Ilkeston and Langley Mill aren't routinely served by EMT, but what about Alfreton? As predicted we reached ChesVegas about 5 early, so had to sit and wait for time. Like last time I used this service in late December (at least then I could shelter from the cold in Bingham's Spoons and Aslockton's surprisingly pleasant waiting room!) We took the route via Beighton and Woodhouse. I wasn't too bothered this time as it wasn't required track, and I wanted nothing but bed! Although, to be honest, I'd felt like that Boston! And I'd passed the ‘losing the will to live' stage a while before then...

Arrival into Sheffield was on time, yet another change of trains. Double refurbs 185131+185139 provided the thrash along the Valley of no Hope. Some badly needed phone charge was sourced, though the WiFi didn't work annoyingly. We *needed* this train to reach Piccadilly on time, as it was a +5 connection onto the last Liverpool service. Ok, I had an alternative of the Cheshire Lines stopper-but my advance was on the TPE. And could I be arsed having my journey extended by another 31 minutes (at least)? No chance. Stick the potential delay repay, I just needed to get home.

We reached Piccadilly on time thankfully, and headed up the footbridge over to platform 14. Just as we reached the platform, 185104 rolled in. Yay! This was an unrefurbished unit-the stark contrast to the refurbished examples (of what I considered to be a perfectly good unit anyway!) Was immediately apparent. We happened to board in the Ballroom, so just sat down there (after a PNB each). The guard, surprisingly, appeared to check tickets too! Upon arrival into Birchwood, which surprisingly was on time, I said goodbye to my ‘companion’ and wished him luck getting back-as he needed to get a taxi for a fair distance from Lime Street too. It was nice having someone travelling with you to keep you just about within the realms of ‘sane' as we both agreed!

Due to the time of day, but mainly Network Warrington incompetence, I set off walking home. I was certainly glad to get home at the end of that day, without a doubt the worst day on the rails I've ever had-and I include my unplanned night on the S&C in that! In fact it took me a couple to days to decide if I even wanted to carry on shack scratching or whether to stay with the safety of Merseyrail... I mean, I’ve had crap days before and just not been bothered about doing anything and just wanted home-but this was on a whole new scale! As too many people have said, ‘you can't stop now!’

And they're right.

I can't. I won't. It's too big a part of me to just give it up!

Sorry for what was probably quite a miserable read-hopefully the next report will be of a much better experience! (I mean... if the next one IS worse...)

Not the best of days there!
Regarding the 153s they are mostly confined to the Lincolnshire routes, except for 1 doubled up diagram each on the Matlock and Ivanhoe circuits.

You're lucky you had such good train crew, my experience of the local routes has had average/miserable crew.

At least you got home on time.
I was delayed into Reading by about 2 hours due to a catastrophic signal failure in the summer, and then I spent another hour waiting for a train home.

A Sense of Deja Vu-10/03/18
Another day, another bash...

On my way to Lincoln last week I was given a couple of Northern Family and Friends vouchers, so I intended to use one today. After having some scran, I set off to Birchwood station in order to catch the first Northern service of the day-the 07:00 to Manchester Oxford Road. I was hoping for a pacer, but a very empty 156424 rolled in to form the service. The train called at all stations to Manchester, which merely slowed the journey down as very few people boarded en route.

158785 was my next move for the bus stop move to Manchester Piccadilly. There was just enough time to grab a drink and some scran before heading to platform 1 to board the Sheffield service. The loadings on this train seem to vary massively-thankfully today a very empty 142028 was provided. I was very grateful of a pacer as the last two times I've been to Sheffield I've been bowled out by a 150/1! I wasn't glad of the pacer for long though... the unit applied power then bang. Bang. Bang. Bang (repeats...) Great. We had the worst wheel flat I'd heard for a long time. Just what one wants for an 80 minute journey! We picked up quite a few passengers in the Derbyshire villages-there seemed to be an open day at one of the Sheffield universities, the guard managed to get rid of a fair amount of his bog roll as a result!

Arrival into Sheffield was a relief, and it was already time to jump into the waiting room for some phone charge! A PNB was also had in the 40 minute interchange and I headed onto RTT to look at planning the bash. I specifically wanted to scratch Creswell as it cleared the Robin Hood Line, and was my most local required shack (that title has now passed onto Wilnecote), so yet again I was on the Lincoln line. 144011 was my chariot for the dull ride to Worksop which, aside from a minor door issue at Darnall, was uneventful. I sourced my ticket to Creswell from the Northern guard to avoid having to cross over to the other platform at Worksop.

Changing at Worksop of course gave me the opportunity to visit the truly excellent Railway Cafe! A large breakfast was ordered, minus the tomatoes and mushrooms in favour of extra bacon and another egg. The scran on offer was cheaper than the equivalent in ‘Spoons, and much better. Nothing against ‘Spoons breakfast at all, the last one I had in Warrington was fantastic (and almost made me miss my bus!), but this is an independent cafe on a railway station. There's always been a decent amount of customers when I've been in-and deservedly so! I've never changed at Worksop and NOT stopped in there! (Unless I’ve already been in that is...) I took my food away onto dud 158777. It was at this point I discovered rancid tomatoes had been put on my breakfast... they didn't touch much so all was good!

I was gripped quite quickly onboard this service, the guard seemed a bit surprised at me pulling bog paper out-but happily scribbled on it. I was soon alighting at Creswell, word of warning: Don't attempt a tight connection here! The distance between platforms, as seems to be a bit of a theme for this line, is rather excessive...

It did at least reduce my 25 minute fester, so it wasn't all bad. The northbound unit was on time, and my chariot was dud 156406 for the 15 minutes back up to Worksop. The scenery on the Northern section of the line is surprisingly pleasant, however I was very glad to have ticked it off and not have to use it again! It’s quite slow for what it is, and apparently (signage at stations certainly backs this up) sees far more than it's fair share of trouble.

I'd forgotten how poor the connections off the ex Nottingham trains are at Worksop... 45 minute wait for a train in either direction? Uggh... I went back to the 156, spoke to the guard who helpfully allowed me to travel to Nottingham. This was the first time I'd done the entire length of the Robin Hood Line on one train, what a drag! The unit wasn't as busy as I expected it'd get, however I got briefly wedged out of my table between Langwith and Mansfield, and again further down the line. The guard appeared and asked the passenger opposite me for a ticket after departing Hucknall, she asked for a return to Nottingham, then claimed to have having boarded at Hucknall... I would have challenged this blatant fare evasion, however I couldn't remember where she'd actually boarded (Kirkby-in-Ashfield possibly?) so kept quiet.

I'd had an interesting idea on this train, and a quick look on RTT proved in possible... where would be the last place you’d expect me to head to next, after reading my previous report?

But firstly, I had more pressing matters. I'm a bloke. It was the day before Mother's Day. I'd definitely bought something by now... honest! Thankfully Broadmarsh shopping centre isn't too far, so off I went-trying not to get distracted by the beautiful looking TrentBarton E200MMCs and NCT E400s...

After my brief trip into Normaldom, I fed the TVM with £11.20 and purchased a return to Swineshead! Yup, back up the Skeggy branch! 156498 was my chariot out to Boston this pleasant afternoon. The ride was very pleasant, much better than my experience last week! There seemed to be less jointed track than I remembered, however the journey felt quite lengthy-but not particularly slow, with the exception of a lengthy wait in the bay platform at Grantham. Sprinting into Grantham alongside a VTEC HST, also calling at Grantham, was fun. I thought I saw something rare as we were departing, a FirstGroup 180 hurtling through heading North! Are Hull Trains actually running a service?? Ah, no. It's an ex GWR unit with Grand Central heading to Bradford...

It felt strange being back at Sleaford so soon, then I realised I was on the 14:52 Skegness service. The same service when things all fell apart last week... I'd be lying if I said I didn't cheer slightly as we flew through Hubberts Bridge station! That was a very nice sight! I had just over half an hour in Boston, so decided to head to Spoons. I eventually found the busy pub and just had time for a pint before the Nottingham service. I now had no need to ever visit Boston again, which I was rather glad of! I just got back to the station in time to comfortably board winner 153326+dud 153321 to Swineshead. The guard looked at my ticket and told me she needed the other portion, she'd not read it properly and seen the origin of Nottingham and decided I'd given the wrong one. Once that was pointed out, it was fine.

I alighted at Swineshead for a 10 minute fester, the shelter was appreciated as it'd just started raining! 16:05 came and went. No sign of the train. Here we go again... Thankfully it was only a couple of minutes late, but my stalker EMT 156, 156470, produced! I made a comment to the guard as I boarded along the lines of ‘I bet you don't get many here!’ and was VERY surprised to be met with the reply “two people have just got off! But no, you're my first passenger.” I mentioned what happened last week with regards to being terminated at Hubberts Bridge-she wasn't particularly impressed either! I did have a few flashbacks as we slowed for Hubberts Bridge and when the door opened... the sound of ‘buzz buzz' was a very reassuring sound!

I had to bail again at Boston to await the 16:48 back to Nottingham. The wait was much more pleasant than my last wait on Boston station had been, that's for sure! The 30 minutes passed quite quickly, however I was distinctly unimpressed at seeing 156498 again! Grr! I couldn't flag it due to needing to catch Northern home from Nottingham, so I parked my arse at a table muttering swear words at the diagram under my breath. The thrash along the branch line, rattling over the jointed track across rural Lincolnshire in the sunset was beautiful! I could do that all day! There was definitely more jointed track in the Westerly direction than the East, I wasn't imagining that at all. I considered bailing at Grantham for the Liverpool service, simply to change units-but in the end I decided I couldn't be bothered.

Totally nothing to do with falling asleep on the approach to Grantham. Honestly...:D

I woke passing Eastcroft depot, which was handy! The unit pulled into platform 7, and it's destination was changed to Liverpool, which made me VERY glad I didn't have an advance home on it! I'd have been livid! I headed over to the waiting room and took use of the handy USB sockets EMT have installed all over the place. That is once I found one that someone hadn't vandalised... I mean seriously?? The ‘nasty, greedy train companies’ do things to make their facilities better, and people have to spoil it. That's one thing I'll (and I suspect the majority of people) never see the possible ‘appeal’ of...

Eventually it was time to board the Leeds train, formed of 158817 (yuck!) With a BTP escort for some unknown reason. A passenger sat a row in front of me learnt that the fare advertised on NRE isn't always the fare available. (Just another reason why I am strongly opposed to ‘Advance Purchase on the Day’...) She was expecting to pay £7 and was shocked at being asked for £14.10! She told the guard (who didn't realise she'd found an APOD fare until I pointed it out) that she'd got the train from Worksop to Nottingham with 10 others and got a groupsave for about £70-so the fare to Sheffield was a rip off, making it clear she wasn't blaming the guard at the same time of course. I was tempted to point out that had she boarded an EMT service she'd potentially have been paying a Penalty Fare of £28.10, but thought better of it...

The rest of the journey was slow, calling all stops, but uneventful. Arrival into Sheffield was a few minutes down, just enough to ID an XC HST which was arriving into platform 1. ‘CrossCountry “High Speed Train” service to York.... this train has 5 coaches’ and in rolls 221121. That's not a HST! Boo! I therefore headed back to Platform 2C where I belong and boarded a half full 142039 for the slog back to Manchester. And what a slog it is... nothing to look at, all shacks except Ardwick called at. It takes an hour and a half to cover 42 miles! No ticket check was conducted on this service, very unusually, and we arrived into Manchester a minute early.

Just enough time for (by Mancunian standards) Late night 323 veg! 323235 was my chariot on the full and standing in the vestibules 22:04 Crewe service as far as Stockport. I proved how out of touch I am with a rail network I used to know so well when we slowed for Levenshulme. I had no idea this train stopped at Levenshulme and Heaton Chapel and wondered what the hell was going on! Even after we stopped, my first thoughts were ‘he's stopped by mistake' ‘why's he opening the doors??’ I was expecting to be late into Stockport, but we were on time. I realised something fantastic as I bailed. Virgin have got rid of their god-awful auto announcer and replaced with the Anne announcements used nationwide! I've no idea what the previous announcer used was, but I couldn't stand the old announcements. Brilliant to hear that these have gone! Quite literally...

323236 was my chariot back to Piccadilly, which had 4 minutes of standing time at Stockport however had arrived early. That felt like forever! We were also held outside Piccadilly for a while and ended up arriving 8 late. The 23:07 Liverpool service was running 13 late, which was bad as I needed the last Cheshire Lines stopper from Occy Road at 23:20! The Chester hippo came and went, which mopped up quite a few Warrington passengers. That unit looked quite empty as it left, 185107 followed it in a few minutes later. I spoke to the guard who didn't expect the stopper would have been held and told me to stay on the 185, so I did. This was an unrefurbished unit unfortunately, and I ended up on a tip-down in the ballroom. I got back to Birchwood 10 minutes early as a result, as I'd travelled on a train earlier than the one I should have been on.

Summary:
1 winner unit
2 winner shacks

I bet you can't wait for May when Northern takes over the TPE 'semi-fast' service on the world's most unreliable line, at least it gives you more options than a stopper without having to ask the guard to board.

But tut-tut on over travelling on your Swineshead ticket, NRE is quoting you need "2 tickets" if you double back via Boston (probably a day return to Boston from Nottingham and a return from Boston to Swineshead)

Can't wait? I'm dreading it!

There's more traffic through to Leeds and York from Birchwood than you'd expect-and I like my cheap TPE only fares, especially as there's no evening peak applicable to those!

I'm also a huge fan of refurbished 185s-can't help but feel that we're losing out big time, and gaining nothing.

Re Swineshead, I thought of that once I was onboard-but a day return isn't possible from Nottingham at off peak times... the guard on the way out asked where I was changing, I said Boston, the ticket was stamped no problem. I suspect there's an unofficial local easement in place to allow it. Same situation as when I did Combe and Elton & Orston really.

All those deluxe 150/1s coming your way on a semi-fast Airport service, at least it will help bridge the gap between Oxford Road & Piccadilly.

The refurbished 185s are nice, but still way too much FC provision for a 3 car unit

Swineshead & Hubberts Bridge are popular with school kids, there was certainly a couple kids getting off when I visited them in 2016.

A couple got off at Hubberts Bridge when I got stuck there the other week.

A service across the Pennines is FAR more useful than an Airport service! I suppose not having to change at Occy Road will be useful when on a 'Northern Only' ticket...

More chance of being able to board (and get a seat) on a semi-fast when it rolls into Piccadilly when it comes from the Airport through ;)

I’m a bit late to the party here but I really enjoyed your report 185143.
Bought back memories of the only time I’ve done the Skeggy line behind a pair of 20s in the early 90s (slightly showing off alert, clang). The jointed track and open scenery, wonderful.
Agreed on those Trentbarton buses too, they look good.
I’ve got a strong connection to that area as my mum was from Nottingham. As I said, really enjoyed reading it.

Very interesting reading.
Like Cowley, the last time I was on the Skegness line, it was a pair of 20s (and a different century!).
You've inspired me to look at it for a possible future move.

Is anyone on here local to either the Skegness or Cotswold lines? I need a favour:D

My phone has decided to expire, taking 22 shack sign phots with it... (I have to board, alight and take a phot of the shack sign for it to count under my rules)

Basically I've lost everything from this year. Gutted doesn't come CLOSE to describe how I've felt all day... I've lost all my bashing logs too. But I have records of everything up to March 18th, and about half the time since then I've been 'Bus W*nking' so I've really dodged a bullet there! All my 18,000 (yes, really...) Merseyrail miles are properly recorded anyway.

The shack phots I've lost are:
Burton Joyce-EMT
Newstead-EMT
Netherfield-EMT
Bingham-EMT
Aslockton-EMT
Boston-EMT
Sleaford-EMT
Airbles-SR
Albrighton-WMT
Ancaster-EMT
Ashfield-SR
Combe-GWR
Creswell-EMT
Evesham-GWR
Hanborough-GWR
Heckington-EMT
Honeybourne-GWR
Hubberts Bridge-EMT
Moreton-in-Marsh-GWR
Mosspark-SR
Pershore-GWR
Swineshead-EMT

I've got friends in Glasgow I can contact to get the ScotRail ones, but if anyone thinks they're able to help please drop me a PM-and I'll be give more detailed instructions. I haven't got the willpower to acknowledge that I spent over 2 hours stuck at Hubberts Bridge freezing my balls off for absolutely nothing... I'll give up bashing before I step foot on that platform again! Just when I thought that day couldn't get any worse...

Currently extremely grateful for my rules with regards to Combe though! I've got to go back there anyway to board.

I know a couple of people reading had been inspired to return to the Skegness line! I'm not expecting much-but any I can get saves me a literally pointless expensive trip out to simply recover lost ground.:'(

Oh and please don't lecture me over backing up. I've literally had that for the last 24 hours and I'm bloody sick to death of it now.

I assume cropping the following wouldn't count for Pershore because it isn't a photo fully of the sign?

Nope. I need a photo of the sign specifically I'm afraid... thanks for the thought though.

A few of these I may be able to help with as I sometimes sporadicaly grab station sign shots when I do a new shack....in fact I was only at Creswell a week or so back.
