Eek, didn't realise I was so far behind with these reports... should have one from the 23rd up at some point today (I swear I'd already done that one...?) And the next one should be up over the weekend.

Thanks. Tonight will be a much later one than intended as something's come off the road at South Parkway-and I'm still on the Merseyrail network.

I'll come and say hi if I'm lucky enough to be on the right side of the Pennines/the mid afternoon Bentham line ex Leeds is a winner even if the 37 is dud.

Have since read it was an empty shunting LM unit so dont worry, none of you're precious 185's have been mortally woonded.

I doubt they will take long to get that sorted as whilst there will obviously be an investigation etc they will bring much of the Northwest to stop if not reopened by lunch tomorrow.

EMT twitter said that services may be impacted in the morning. They seem to be the most alert and reliable when it all goes hooters heavenwards! Northern are calling the problem 'Safety Checks', TPE, VT and LM are saying 'operational incident'-EMT said 'low speed derailment'...

I assume RAIB have/are attending?

I assume so also. Interesting you mention different TOCs responses and how good 1 in particular is, theres a similar discussion going on about Scotrail just now as they called cable theft signaling issues where as if they had been honest they would get a great deal more sympathy from the punters.

LM aren't expecting to run anything past Crewe today-it's not directly said, but I assume VT aren't either. EMT are drafting an emergency timetable-but aren't expecting to run past Occy Road.

I'm going to summarise all of my bashes since my last report, as there's too many to remember the detail of to post them all...

September 23rd
A report I've had several disagreements with my tablet over wether I typed it or not... COMPUTER SAYS NO seems to rule the day here!
The day was a lazy afternoon on a GM Rail Ranger, including a very late all shacks 319 to the Airport which I borded half expecting it to be sent express on the return. Sure enough it was! (But behind a TPE so no insane motor scream, which was probably a good thing as every single window was open in that empty motor coach and it was ruddy cold!) After a leap back to the Airport, I sampled a refurbished 185 which was full and standing. The refurbishment on these 185s really make a mockery of Northern' sprinter refurbs to 'as new' condition don't they! After a mini tram veg, I jumped on a Voyager to Stockport for a PNB. I didn't wait long until a winner 221 popped up to take me back to Piccadilly. Next up was a Rose Hill and back on a Merseyrail pacer beast because I wanted some pacer action. On returning to Piccadilly I had a choice to make. Winner 221 on the 19:27 or winner 158 on the 19:30... I boarded the voyager and at Stockport approached the ATW guard to explain why I didn't have a ticket to Wilmslow but was told that her bog roll machine was dead so she couldn't ching me. At Wilmslow, the TVMs are card only now and the ticket office was shut. I flagged the Northern service and boarded the pendo back to Stockport. I bailed there obviously, and after a short while an ATW 158 arrived. Winner! One left now! I couldn't believe my luck and boarded. A 185 was taken back to Stockport, but no winners turned up so I eventually ended up on a Pendo to Manchester to head home. 4 winners

September 30th
Another day on one of my favourite tickets-an 'I haven't got a clue where I'm going and I don't give a **** ranger' would be a better name! Refurb 150276 was taken over the Hope Valley which I was admittedly quite impressed with, especially given my hatred of 3+2 seated 150s... Up to York via PonteCarlo we went then, upon discovering a farce at Garforth and asking very nicely it was onto a 185 to Seamer-the line past Malton being required track for the Class 185 (in this direction) that's bad given it's a direct service from my local Isn't it...? I'll save myself by saying I did it on the Tour de Yorkshire Spoons though! Bailing st Seamer we picked up a well loaded 158906 down the 'Ull Coast and charged our phones on the scenic run. After some scran, we boarded another 158 to Sheffield (having to flag a required 142 in the process) which was full of foul mothed football fans. At Sheffield we had a required pacer across the Hope Valley. I bailed at Ashburys to be different and headed towards home after some starship thrash. 1 winner

October 1st
A day of Stagecoach Manchester bus vegging, trying not to laugh/get soaked when a member of staff in Levenshulme's ASDA dropped a bottle of coke and it burst spraying coke everywhere at high pressure... The main reason for today was to visit one of the forum's excellent Fares Workshops (Thanks again Yorkie-not sure if you read my reports but just in case!) A farce with the bus gen meant that the last 34 to Leigh drove past me (which I was EXTREMELY unimpressed about!) So I had to detour via Wigan, more than doubling my journey.

October 6th
A post college trip into Liverpool to see how Phase one of Liverpool Lime Street's major upgrade was progressing (remember that date for any reason at all anyone...?) I took an EMT service from Warrington which felt rather strange as they don't stop at my local! Noting the overkill of staff (even the staff themselves admitted that) and that the crowd control on the Platform 5/6 bridge didn't seem to be as good as when the wall collapsed on Lime Street apprpach I went out for some PEP action (mmm.... PEP...). I took that set to Southport and back and alighted at LPY for a PNB. I'd said to myself earlier that I'd do the pendo 'divert' if it was a winner as it wasn't, I headed for the PEPs. I swore under my breath and handed £3.05 over this time though! After a quick chat with a VT Driver Manager I know, I boarded my winner pendo which had a lot of confused people when we went the wrong way! The TM soon explained what was happening however. More PEP related fun happened until I was halfway down the Wirral which was when I heard of the events unfolding at Allerton. Then I knew Inwas going to have a rough trip home. On arrival at South Parkway, we were greeted by a few Carlisle Security staff who explained that there were no trains running on the mainline and did a very good job of ascertaining roughly where everyone was going. I declined to board the coach as we were told 'Warrington, Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York get on here'. Birchwood wasn't mentioned so I was told I'd be given a taxi (once the staff had worked out where Birchwood is-and I'm talking about the actual Merseyrail staff here I'm afraid...) after some to-ing and fro-ing which included me being told to go to Hunts Cross, wait 90 minutes for a train to Warrington and that was the best I'd get, I was told to wait until the next PEP arrived (which was the actual connection for the TPE train-the rail rep for it had already left...) and ended up sharing the taxi with two others. That is, once the Byelaw Enforcement Officers who were present had broken up arguments with taxi drivers as they all had booked jobs in Crewe (rail work) and were being difficult about going elsewhere... quite a night!

October 7th
Another Northern ticket??! Yep! I missed a Calder Valley express by seconds so ended up on the Man Vic-Leeds stopper formed of 158754 which still has rhe comfy seats in the middle coach. I'd lost the will to live and lost all my connections, but managed to board a HST to Sheffield. My penultimate Northern 158 was taken to Meadowhall, then a dud to Brough. Why Brough? Well... my last Northern 158 was on the next Sheffield! That was taken to Donny, saying goodbye to the Leeds 322 as I arrived. Bum. I managed to get onto a 91 and after some festering a required 144 to Lancaster. The dogbox it would take back and the Morecambe shuttle were dud-the next Northern service Southbound wasn't for hours-so I managed to get a pendo. I planned to fester for winners but got bored so Ormskirk and back on two dud 153s it was! Arriving and departing the other side of Ormskirk station was wierd! Then a refurb 156 back to Manchester where I spent most of the journey arguing with a drunk pie eater that the train didn't go to Wigan...

October 8th
A nice rail rep was taken non stop from St. Helens to Scouseland-unplanned, but as everyone but 1 person wanted Lime Street we were taken non stop, in a similar journey time to the all shacks train. I found the Routemaster being utilised as a waiting room, yes, really! Then headed to Central for a mini-forum meet. Not a meet as such, just a few of us planning to do pendo diverts together really. I met AntoniC and fellow reporter Blindtraveler for the first time, as well as Yorkie, Starmill, Bungle965 and a couple of others. We took a 508 non stop to South Parkway (MMMMMMM!!!!!! THRASH!) for a pendo to Runcorn. I immediately returned on the next Northbound with AntoniC where we lost 20-odd minutes outside South Parkway and missed our connection as a result. We both caught the next Southport which I took to Sandhills (via Southport of course...) More PEPs happened and I headed home via service bus from Hunts Cross as it's a bit different than the norm.

October 13th
Headed into South Parkway then immediately back to Widnes on a 153+153+158 combo (1 153 being a winner) after a NRCoC/NRCoT debate at the ticket office. I took a rammed 319 out of Lime Street to see how the work was progressing (well) then an unsucessful Northern Press offer token hunts was done across Lancashire. And PEPs. Obviously!

October 14th
What a load of **** this day was... a farce buying my ticket made me miss my planned train (which I was seriously unimpressed over) then an engineering overrun at Lime Street buggered my alternative too! My train from St. Helens was 25L and was terminating at Wigan vice Preston. Goodbye connection! I wanted to give up and go home before I'd even got off my first train. That's a new record(!) I got a refurb 185 to Barrow though which I got ridiculously excited about and then a pacer to Maryport which I got even more excited about. Then from Maryport to Carlisle a 3+2 seated coach that was hotter than hell and had no bog on it. Not impressed! I got on a 350 back to Lancaster in about a fifth of the time LAN-CAR took, did a quick bash over the Bentham line, sourced Northern vouchers at Carnforth, took in the Blackpool South branch and went home. No winners today, crap day and unsurprisingly still waiting for my delay repay...

October 21st
West Yorkshire-but I'll do a proper report for this one.

October 23rd
The big day. Lime Street reopens! But the first off peak service off the Chat Moss has different ideas! The 09:51 ex Warrington sat down just past Earlestown and my train had to rescue it. Arriving into St Helens Junction an impressive 46L, I bailed for the stopper to meet a friend who was coming down from the Wigan line and was already at Huyton. We lost more time heading towards Liverpool and we arrived at 12:06. 1hr 49mins after my advertised departure time from Newton le Willows, just 15.75 miles away. That's impressive! Many PEPs, the ferry and a bus were enjoyed as the rest of the day went without a hitch.

October 24th
A day of buses, mainly to take in the new Mersey Gateway bridge without paying the toll for it! One of my buses changed destination en route and took me to South Parkway where I gave in and got an Area C saveaway and hitched a train ride up to Kirkby for the peak hours 97A/98As. Back to Liverpool and swifly across the water on a couple of winner tridents before heading back home (by bus).

October 27th
Och aye, just a wee day oot today! Up tae bonny Scotland for a DayTrip(per) which I'll do a report on. On the whole it went well...

October 28th
Full doss mode ensued after the previous day so it was a lazy afternoon in Greater Manchester. A few moves were done just for the sake of it, including travelling over Ordsall Lane and being amazed at how much Ordsall Chord had progressed since I last passed it in daylight! While stood at Victoria, a required pacer arrived ex Newton Heath. Thankfully, the anchors came on and it formed a service to Wigan. The new track through Bolton platform 5 was scored and I bailed out at Wigan North Western. The station and dump---- err... town centre was rammed with Wigan fans and Rovers fans. After a compulsory pie, I witnessed a group of Rovers Fans boarding a pendo singing a very honest song about Wigan and that they wanted to go home. I soon learnt that the forum's resident Rovers Fan was on platform 5 so I moved over there as my 350 was running to TPE time. I caught up with roversfan2001 before he boarded a 156, with another compulsory round of the 'Wigan's a s*ithole' chants. My 350 was rammed as predicted, but I got a tip down and connected to ExStream and went to the airport and back to Picc. Stockport leaps were done on various units-I chose to wait for a 185 that was running well over an hour late as I knew the guard working it, and I've not seen him since he worked for a different TOC. I was sat on the wrong platform and realised just as the local door shut so I missed his train! More random leaps were done before a refurb 185 back home. I love these more every time I travel on one!

I spent this last weekend mainly on the wrong side o't Pennines, I'll be doing reports for both days in due course.

Neither did I!

I was actually sat in 142023 - 091 was locked OOU.
If it makes you feel any better-023 is a very special pacer, and one that's very close to my heart...

I alighted off it at Redcar British Steel-thus ending my Northern shack requirements (for the first time)

‘Is this train going t'Leeds?’ 21st October 2017

Firstly, apologies for the lack of reports recently (hopefully someone's actually reading this!) I've not had too many exciting trips lately, and I kinda forgot/couldn't be bothered typing them...

But I'm back!

You can probably work out where I was heading by the title-I was on a West Yorks Train Dayrover to red pen as much as I could!
The bash started with an extremely vocal 158812 into Manchester Piccadilly. We made up about 5 minutes between Birchwood and Occy Road, that driver was really hammering down Cheshire Lines! Mmm... thrash! I bailed at Piccadilly and changed onto 185106 on a Middlesbrough service, taking a seat in the ballroom as far as Huddersfield. I was very impressed at how quickly the guard checked my ticket-I was at the front of a rather busy train (I can see the looks of disbelief in your eyes at learning my TPE 185 was busy!) But I was still gripped before Guide Bridge. I bailed at Huddersfield to get a WY Dayrover on the proper ticket stock and for a sausage and egg butty. Once I'd finished my scran, I boarded 185136+185105 t'Leeds. These were double units as it was a Scarborough service running out of South Parkway due to the Lime Street blockade. Another seat in the ballroom was taken for the 20 minute journey to Leeds.

Arriving into Leeds, I noticed a required 91 on the next Kings Cross, so I walked quickly over to platform 6 and parked my bottom in coach C. (I think). As I stood up to alight at Wakefield, the extremely geordie TM asked if I'd heard the announcement as she'd had problems with the PA on the way North. I told her everything was fine and then got excited by the pacer in the loop-but saw it was dud. I was then accused of being a trainspotter and the doors were released. Straight over the bridge it was and onto double winners 43052+43066. This was the ex-EMT set with the ‘It's never dull in Hull’ vinyl on the buffet coach. I made no comment on that and boarded the train.

It's wierd seeing IC70 seats in VTEC colours! Not that I sat in them as the train was rather busy and very warm in the coach I was in. I'd seen a required 144 that would be working a Selby before I left Leeds-I knew it’d still be there, so on arrival at Leeds I charged straight for it. 144014 tick! 3 144s to go. I worked out I could take the pacer to East Garforth, and nothing was ID'd that was of any use on Neville Hill. A quick walk over the bridge ensued and I was soon on dud 142017 back to Leeds which for some reason was absolutely rammed! Arrival into Leeds was slightly delayed and I headed up onto the festering point/footbridge to wait for a winner. The easy option of the next VTEC was dud, so I was up there for over 40 minutes until a winner was due. As it turned out, this too was a VTEC move, 91121 down to Wakefield Westgate.

I was sat across the aisle from someone in the quiet coach who was on the phone for the whole journey down to Wakey. The good thing about Wakefield Westgate is that the fester back onto a northbound VTEC is long enough to make, but short enough. The downside of that is that the VTEC services cross on Leeds approach...

Yet again I see an EMT power car pull in, this one being winner 43043. This had a rake of VTEC coaches, so I took advantage of a plug socket in the rearmost standard coach before the socketless buffet car. At Leeds I ID'd the rear power car as dud 43238, which was a bit of a disappointment. The ‘waiting game’ was played for quite a while, around an hour IIRC, before winner 144008 was spotted on a Sheffield via Moorthorpe working. Back to Wakey Westgate it was then! Mainline pacer thrash is always fun! 2 144s left to get...

A HST arrived at the same time as me, so I jumped on it and ID'd the power cars as double winners 43208+43272 upon arrival at Leeds International. More festering was done as I knew the S&C 14:49 S&C service is booked to have a 153 on and 4 were required. The wait paid off and 153304 fell to the red pen, with dud 158787 tagged on the back for the ride. The service was rather busy, and I just managed to get a seat. 10 and a bit miles later, I bailed at Shipley. Amazingly, I managed to find the right platform first time for the next Leeds service. The weather was starting to turn unpleasant now, the wind was picking up and it was getting cold. (This was Storm Brian day) so it was a relief to see 333010 arriving into the platform. That felt longer than 6 minutes for sure!
Back to Leeds (for a change(!)) And I headed straight for 185121 to Huddersfield. I'd had gen on a required 144 on the Penistone line. As I'd left Leeds on the 153, a winner 142 went to Manchester. I planned to intercept it at Morley later. The 185 only had a few standees, and I managed to secure one of the gold dust coated window table seats and got some juice into my phone battery.

Dud 144020 was taken down to a now quite wet and unpleasant Shepley. We had real problems on the way down with wheelslip and arrived about 7 late. I was chatting to the guard as she noticed my RMT badge-the topic of the ASLEF sell-out on GTR Southern was mentioned, she had a feeling the drivers would accept the bribe, whilst obviously hoping they didn't! I've made my feelings on DOO clear before, but in case you don't know my thoughts on the matter-the way I've described the GTR/ASLEF ‘deal' and the fact I have a certain yellow RMT badge kinda gives it away...

Shepley station is a passing point-but the train will depart and stop by the points if the Northbound service is late, which surprised me. My gen proved correct as winner 144015 was working the Huddersfield service. One to go! I got gen that Man United had just been beaten by Huddersfield, in Huddersfield which meant Huddersfield station could be... interesting. I also found out that the Calder Valley had flooded around Todmorden-which was my planned route home. As such, I decided heading back to the right side of the Pennines was a good idea.

There was a queueing system set up in Huddersfield station for Manchester services mainly, with a queue for Huddersfield Town fans and a queue for Manchester United fans. I was half tempted to ask the BTP stood by it what someone who couldn't give a toss about football should do-but thought better of it. Why had I left the station? Well, I didn't have a ticket back to Manchester-hence the Calder Valley plan and there was no way I was chinging out TPE prices to stand in a queue for an unspecified amount of time and then on a ram packed train with a load of kickball veg! So I took the option that only the Huddersfield Town fans had thought of, and understandably so. I walked to the bus station, via the chippy, and got on the bus. £4.50 was handed over to the driver of winner E400 33689 for the run over the Pennines. The bus was well loaded out of Huddersfield town centre, and still had a good number on for the trip back to the right side of the Pennines.

It was nearly dark when we reached the base of the Pennines-I was sat at the front of the bus upstairs and the journey over-or rather, down the Pennines was terrifying! As soon as we started to climb, it suddenly went pitch black outside and the rain and wind intensified dramatically. For anyone unfamiliar with the road (which I imagine is most of you), from the top of the Pennines, on a good day, it’s possible (just about) to see Manchester City Centre. Even at night you see the lights. But this was anything but a good night, and even the lights of Oldham were invisible. The route down into Saddleworth is steep, unlit and has a very sharp bend in the middle of it. It's quite an experience on a double decker bus at the best of times, but on a night like tonight it was rather difficult! The driver had to dim the lights inside the bus so he could see better, and thankfully got us into Oldham safely. I bailed in Oldham for both a PNB and a better bus. I practically swam over to the facilities and when I got back to the bus station it was difficult to hold a conversation due to the noise of the building being pounded by rain!

I boarded winner B7TL 30912 to Piccadilly Gardens working service 83. Someone genuinely asked the driver if he could stop at B&Q as he was going to start building an Ark... I met a friend in Piccadilly and we boarded dud 33850 down to Fallowfield as a fill in move as his train was cancelled. We were sat on the front seats downstairs, the driver heard me saying what time I needed to be at Shudehill for-and turned round to tell me we were going the wrong way (we were stopped at lights at the time). He was obviously trying to be helpful-and seemed quite surprised when I said ‘I know-we're bus enthusiasts!’ we then spent the rest of the journey-on a diversion too (for no apparent reason, Magic Bus were running the normal route!) Talking about buses. We bailed near Owens Park Campus and waited for a First Bus back towards Manchester. I don't know whether it's the impressive Stagey frequency bus you always seem to wait AGES for a First bus on this route!

Dud 33854 appeared out of nowhere and took us back into Manchester. I was tempted to jump on the Metrolink round to Shudehill, but decided to be good and avoid DOO. Oh, avoid the chance of running into RPIs ticketless! I bumped into some people I used to go to School with (I feel old saying that!) Outside Shudehill who were on a night out. I didn't have long to chat as I saw dud 37400 driving into the bus station with Cadishead on the front of it.
I got a good seat upstairs, about 2/3 of the way down. I’d only had this bus once before and that was last year, and it was on a proper bus stop leap too. Rochdale Interchange to the railway station... What.? I'm not paying 20p at the Interchange when the station facilities are free! The journey back to Cadishead was pleasant enough, where I got a lift home at the end of a great day!

You have been busy for a fair while then, despite having been almost quieter than a certain resident of St. Helier!

That bus ride homewards from Huddersfield sounds intense, that's for sure. One amazing experience too! One day I will have to get gen on that chippy in Huddersfield too, as your latest report (yes they are being read but I have had very little time to reply or post at all lately, let alone read the forum!) has got me wanting to get up there and have an insanely major clearout in West Yorkshire. If you saw my needs you'd understand why, especially with the shack needs on Northern...

Nice work on getting down to just 1 more 144 to get! You'd be embarassed by how much I need with the 142s and 144s! I note too you got that 158 you wanted by sheer luck, so nice work on that too. I honestly can't tell you how long ago it was for sure since I cleared the ATW 158s, but I am 99% certainly it was in 2005. I delayed meeting up with someone specifically to get it in the book on a Newport to Severn Tunnel Junction leap! Don't forget this was a long time before gen was easily obtained!

‘ScotRail are sorry to announce...’ 27/10/17

It felt like ages since I'd booked this-but the day for another Scottish adventure was finally here! After the traditional ‘oh s*** I'm going to miss my train...’ I found myself on Warrington Bank Quay's platform 3 with not much time to spare before the 06:15 ‘Virgin Super Voyager to Glasgow Central'

I boarded in coach B mentally questioning what was so super about dud 221111 as I found my seat, which unusually had an excellent view! That is, assuming one likes to stare at a plastic panel for 3 hours... as I don't, I wandered down the train and made myself at home in coach D. The TM arrived fairly quickly and at this point I discovered the passengers across the aisle were from Liverpool. The onboard shop opened later than usual at Preston so I packed everything back into my bag and went for a drink. Upon returning to my table, I found the reserved seat opposite had now been taken. I worked on my massive (now cleared) Rail Miles backlog and daylight eventually came between Penrith and Carlisle. We seemed to pick up a lot of passengers at Lockerbie, which soon became apparent by the sudden influx of Scottish accents. The weather between here and Glasgow was typically Scottish really... fog followed by brilliant sunshine then rain then fog then sun... I could have swore I saw a wee bit of snow when stopped at a peg outside Motherwell whilst awaiting to do the ‘Cambuslang Crawl' (as I shall now call it!) This service always gets stopped at a peg then a slow run through the suburbs of Glasgow behind an EMU.

I moved forward near Uddingston in preparation to alight and get an SPT Daytripper quickly (as I mentally thought I had less time than I did). Arrival into Glasgow was slightly early despite the slow run (as is usual, both the slow run and early arrival!) I was glad to get off the Voyager-but as soon as I got off, I immediately wanted to get back on! It was warmer in Warrington 3 hours earlier than it was in Glasgow, it was SO COLD! Anyway, I headed downstairs to the Low Level platforms as the main ticket office was quite busy. Here's a fun fact-the manufacturer of the lift down to the low level platforms are (or certainly were when it was built-as there's a plaque in the lift stating so) headquartered in the business park less than 2 miles from my house!
I purchased a Daytripper and headed downstairs to board winner 320303 to Hyndland. I noticed some disruption due to a farce at Rutherglen IIRC, but nothing that'd affect me. Whilst onboard, I got a phone call from a friend who had got gen I was in Glasgow and was on a TPE 350 himself. He'd had all the shacks I was going for, but we were on the same train home. I bailed at Hyndland and waited for the train to leave. And waited. And waited. It was announced as ‘delayed' due to waiting for a traincrew member, and now my Helensburgh train (6 car 334) was stuck behind. I purchased a badly needed hot chocolate, and was told ‘aye, even by Glasgow standards it's bloody freezing pal', which was a relief! The 320 eventually moved 10L. When my friend did the shacks I'm headed for, his plan wasn't as good as mine-something I rubbed in a fair bit on the phone. He did Cardross and Craigendoran first-however I had different ideas.

I boarded double winners 334004+334037 and took a seat in 334004-which was a private train on the non stop run to Dalmuir. At Dalmuir, we either picked up at Ticket Examiner or he was in the front unit. Thankfully upon arrival at Helensburgh Central, I hadn't missed my bus! I exited the station and crossed the road to join Wilson's of Rhu Optare Solo YJ17 CPN working service 316 for the 9ish mile run up to Garelochhead. There were 3 other passengers on the bus-I asked the driver to let me know when we were at Garelochhead station, to which I was told the nearest stop was ‘by a wee Spar shop'. Thanks for the gen on the shop! I knew the stop was some distance away from the station anyway. We lost two passengers within Helensburgh and then we set off for a fast run up to Garelochhead. I was already in love with the scenery-to which on the pendo home I would be told ‘meh. You’re easily impressed-wait until you get to Corrour and Glenfinnan!’ The driver really had his foot down and it was a good fast run up to Garelochhead (emphasis on the up). My fellow passenger bailed in Rhu village-which is the only significant settlement en route, with the exception of the MoD base between Rhu and Garelochhead.

I took advantage of the supply raid in the Spar, which really was tiny and set off towards the station. It was an extremely steep uphill walk, which took me by surprise, but I soon reached the gravel platform and took a seat on the bench. I had about 15 minutes, and it was beautiful. A really quiet station with an excellent view over Gare Loch. But then my peace was shattered by someone with a leaf blower just off the platform...

Winner 156476 arrived around 5 minutes late to take me one stop down the line to Helensburgh Upper. The train was fairly busy, but I managed to get a pair of seats no trouble at all. The single platform of Helensburgh Upper was soon reached and I was initially surprised to see a few passengers on the platform who didn't board that unit. Then I remembered the Oban train was due in 15 minutes! Winner 156477 soon appeared up the very steep gradient and I boarded the very warm train. Again, I got a seat without trouble and marvelled at how impressive the scenery was. I wasn't expecting the line to be so twisty and I must admit the masochistic side of me did kind of fancy a pacer on here...

ANYWAY! My next shack was Arrochar & Tarbet where I'd already decided I was in love with the West Highland Line! The unit had to wait a few minutes to leave as an oil train was occupying the adjacent platform and unsurprisingly fouling the points, and was now about 10 minutes late-as it was delayed near Cardross waiting for the ex-Oban I was on to pass. I took a seat in the waiting room, dug into my supplies relaxed for 75 minutes. I had absolutely no signal-and hadn't done since around Rhu, so downloading a film was off the cards. Ah well. I emerged from the shelter about 10 minutes before the train was due, and found a normal sat on the platform! We started talking-she found shack scratching both brilliant and a bit mad at the same time... (which if I'm honest is pretty much what most people make of it!) I asked if she used this line often, and was told ‘not anymore-it's too unreliable' hmm... our train arrived about 5 minutes late, which seemed typical, to take us towards Oban and Mallaig. As such, it was a 6 car 156-which is a weird sight to this Englishman used to 2 car units even at peak times! The units were winner 156449, fresh dud 156476 (hello you!) and dud 156445 which I took to Ardlui, the limit of validity of my SPT Daytripper.

The Southbound service arrived into Ardlui about a minute after the Northbound (honestly, it's like I planned that to happen...) and I boarded dud 156447+winner 156474+dud 156492 back to Garelochhead. I couldn't stop photting the spectacular scenery out of the window, to the point that I reached the limit of my phone memory. Err... oops. Things were hastily deleted so that later shack sign phots could be taken. I went for a PNB then alighted at Garlochhead, mentally planning when I could possibly do the WHL proper. The Oban branch (and possibly Upper Tyndrum) are reachable in a day from Warrington, but the Fort William/Mallaig shacks would require a hotel up here. I had a bit of a wait for the bus, which was spent mainly on the station before taking on the descent to the main road. I was quite worried when I looked at the bus times as the times on the bus stop and the times online were drastically different. Thankfully the world wide web was correct as the same Solo I had earlier rolled up to take me back to Helensburgh Central. Once there, winner 334038+dud 334035 were waiting to leave for Edinburgh. I sat in the dud as that had plug sockets fitted. The journey to Edinburgh takes a long time. In fact, I only just in Scotland when my train to Helensburgh that morning departed Edinburgh! I bailed two stops later at Cardross for a very short fester before heading north.

Double duds (GRR!) 334012+334028 soon pulled in to take me one stop back to Craigendoran. I'd been told how exposed this station was, and it sure was! Thankfully it had warmed up a fair bit from this morning-but it was beginning to cool again now. The station soon became rammed with schoolkids and the units soon returned from Helensburgh. I boarded 334028 this time and was in urgent need of a PNB, however helpfully the facility was locked out. Great. I'd planned to change at Dalreoch, but I'd worked out I could make the Balloch train at Dumbarton East so I remained onboard for an extra two stops. Good move as winner 320321 was pulling in on a Dumbarton Central turnback as soon as my unit released the doors. I wasn't hanging about! I jumped on and went straight in the bog. The unit arrived at Central before I'd emerged, but it didn't matter to me!

A friend was meant to be meeting me-but he misunderstood my message and bailed out of the Balloch train at Dumbarton East-a decision which would later prove to be a very good one indeed! Winner 318257+dud 320302 arrived at Dumbarton Central to take me towards Balloch. The train was surprisingly well loaded as it had left central Glasgow ahead of the main rush, but anyway I bailed at Alexandria-where I took refuge in the waiting room as it was now quite cool. The units soon returned and I bailed a few moments later. I was then informed that the Balloch train thst my friend was on had an issue at Dumbarton Central and was now over 10 minutes late. Great... doubled the fester at Renton then! But that was just the start of it...

They ‘pulled a Merseyrail' and ran it non stop from Renton to Balloch! This didn't matter as a) I was half an hour ahead of my plan and b)I could claim delay repay. A 320/3 and 320/4 sped past, then the PIS decided to update to cancel the train. I spoke to a helpful person on the help point who I assume was based in ScotRail's control-shame on the TOCs south of the border who use NRE and you spend 5 minutes trying to get the person on the phone in India to understand which station you’re stood at! He told me that the next train would definitely be calling at Renton-as that was about 8L and I was concerned the same thing would happen. The Airdrie train immediately went to ‘delayed', which I wasn't concerned about as the train had missed it's departure time from Balloch.

My friend let me know the train had arrived in Balloch-I told him to bail at Renton and I was taking the next Northbound service. A short while later, I was informed that the train had failed. The driver was in the carriage looking inside panels and trying to fix a fault. The doors were locked-the passengers were told nothing and eventually someone cracked and forced a door open. Of course, the sheep mentality kicked in and passcoms were pulled, door released pulled all sorts. All because there was no one to a) assist the driver and/or b)update the passengers! (Are you reading, RMT?) There's a rank of railwayman in a perfect position to do both of those things... even my pro-DOO (yes, really...) friend stuck onboard admitted a guard would have made a big difference. (Can the SR Ticket Examiners use the PA? There was no TE onboard anyway, so it's not hugely relavent)

The 17:23 Balloch service was soon cancelled, as was it's return working. I buzzed the help point a couple of times to find out what was happening, but not a lot of information was available except ‘the driver is looking at a fault on the broken down train'-again, a second member of staff could and would update control. I was told at 17:40ish that the broken train was about to be moved. It passed me about 15 minutes later, and the sight of dud 318264 was very welcome indeed after nearly 80 minutes on the cold platform! I was in urgent need of a PNB so I boarded where the facility was and... guess what? Out of use! I was extremely unimpressed by this and sat down near the front. Thankfully there was a facility on the platform that I took immediate advantage of. My friend appeared from the pub and we reboarded the well loaded 318264 towards Glasgow. At Dalmuir he had the idea of bailing at his local Anniesland for the 156 to Queen Street. I checked it met the minimum connection time onto my pendo home, which it did. With Anniesland-Kelvindale being required track I said aye to that! I had planned to scratch Lochwinnoch, but that was well out the window now-I was fairly lucky to get back to Glasgow in time for my train home! If that ex Balloch had been cancelled too-I'd have been asking for a taxi. The person in control mentioned it'd been amongst the longest disruption he'd had. I was tempted to ask if he was new-but thought better of it!

Anniesland couldnae arrive soon enough! It was a relief to get off that dud 318, we headed for the bay platform. I wasn't too impressed to see 156477 again, still with it's Glasgow Queen Street-Oban window labels attached! We sat in a table seat in the middle of the coach, the nearest window label was err... ‘borrowed' for my bedroom wall. We were surprised to get ticket checked by the guard on this journey due to the very short distances between stops, and arrived into Queen Street with 30 minutes until my train home. We stopped in Poundland on the way to Central for a supply raid. There was an issue with the self checkout-the store worker tried to explain what the issue was, and showed me what she was doing-but her accent was that strong much of what she said was incomprehensible... I had a drink that was reduced to 50p, it scanned as £1-she tried to change the price but it wouldn't accept it! The manager came over and eventually found a loophole and off I went.

I said goodbye to my Glaswegian friend on the concourse, boarded dud ex-stalker 390148 and found my English mate who explained how he'd practically cleared the shacks served by the Barrhead stopper in the time I was stuck at Renton. He was, of course, soon rudely told where to put those shacks! It was dark, so there was nothing to see outside. We just had to engage in the challenge to stay awake... I needed a PNB when I boarded, but managed to forget about it until around Oxenholme. We both ended up having a PNB at the same time, thankful we weren't on 156s anymore with just one facility, and lost our unreserved table in the process. Doh! We soon found another in coach C however. The train was deserted-so to lose our seats was really unlucky! My mate bailed at Wigan to get a 350 to Manchester. I stayed on until the next stop-a town far superior than Wigan in every possible way, especially on the rugby pitch, Warrington. Unlike the last time I used this train, I didn't meet a drunk pie eater on a segway staggering up and down the carriage and I was soon alighting into the cold night at Warrington Bank Quay at the end of a long, tiring day.

For the record, I claimed Delay Repay from Northern in the first and second weeks of October, and claimed for the Renton farce from Scotrail last Monday (6th November). I received £11.90 in RTVs from ScotRail yesterday. And that was despite my claim being delayed by being subject to quality checks. I'll be surprised if I hear from Northern by Christmas-my last claim from the clowns took 4 MONTHS! They've really got a long way to go to improve! I really can't blame Alex Hynes for bailing out of that mess and moving to a far, far superior TOC! Anyway-rant over...

Nice to be called the forum's resident Rovers fan, though @MidnightFlyer may wish to challenge that. ;) For the benefit of Quinn, I boarded the 156 as it was a refurb one and the other unit was a 142, much to your distaste as I remember. :p

I'm extremely jealous of your Scottish trips, I've still never ventured north of the border...

Oh 185143, and indeed roversfan, you're both in for a treat when you eventually get up the WHL proper. It's stunning up there!

Apart from the significant delays, that sounded like a good day and I really must make note of those moves for the WHL line shacks you did, as they are required. Got to make an effort given I'm allegedly the closest of the regular trip reporters to catching up with Kite!

The Great Escape! 18/11/17
I've stolen the title from a fantastic ticket LM used to offer occasionally where you could travel anywhere on the network for about £12 with a railcard-or for just £5 if you were under 16, which I was at the time-yippee!

I had a complimentary LM day pass which needed using before December, so set off to Runcorn to catch the first Brum of the day at 06:50. It's only the third time I've caught this service as when heading darn saarf I'd normally catch the 06:03 pendo to Stafford then LM to Euston with split advances. I've had a 350/1 and a 350/3 on this service previously, so I didn't know what to expect. The station was rather busy and very cold-I found myself rather unwilling to pay over £3 for a hot chocolate and took a seat on the cold platform.

Dud 350117 (cleared the 350/1s earlier in the year) arrived to take me towards Brum. I'd realised the previous night that I'd made a mess of my plan with a change at Rugby that I couldn't possibly make. I hadn't really replanned it, I just set out with basic objectives. I had the choice of changing at Stafford for the Trent Valley stopper (and then several options when on that), changing at Wolverhampton for the Shrewsbury stopper, or changing at the Bat Cave for the Hereford or London services. I settled on changing at Stafford, and changed onto the Euston service.

350129 was my traction down towards the capital, with the train getting fairly busy as we proceeded through the Trent Valley stations, but not to the point of it being standing room only-so the capacity was about right. I knew I was going to miss my hopeful +3 at the Keynes, so I asked LM for gen on the next 3 southbound services-which were all duds. As such I made an unplanned trip to the capital, making a rude gesture at Kensal Green for being the only WCML station between Euston and Glasgow I've not boarded or alighted a train at (I say such as I've alighted at Polesworth but not boarded-so can't properly count it) on the way.

We'd crawled through Watford Junction, where I not only saw the Abbey Flyer in the platform, but I saw one of my last 4 in service 350s working an MK stopper. GRR! Never caught up with that 350...

Arrival into Euston was on platform 17 and was slightly late, meaning I had less time to get the Tring stopper than I was really comfortable with. The Cally Sleeper was in platform 15, one of the only times I've ever seen it (Euston about 5 times and Crewe around midnight when I was coming off the Heart of Wales) , so I grabbed a phot of the 92 and boarded double duds 350370+350266. Not quite understanding the logic of running a 350/1 on the Crewe service but a 350/3 on the Tring stopper, I took a table in a completely empty carriage. We were calling at all ‘National Rail’ (as I assume TfL would call it) to Watford Junction. Crossrail 345015 was spotted on Wembley TMD as we slowed to stop at Wembley Central-I believe the first time I've ever done so on a mainline train. Whilst stopper at Wembley, a Chiltern 165 sped through heading south-where would that be going if it was at Wembley Central? It also occurred to me that this was the last time I'd leave Euston on a London Midland operated train, which is a sad thought.

I bailed at Watford and had just over 5 minutes to get to the Abbey Flyer 319. 319013 was my first LM 319, and what a state it was in. The seats were in exactly the same condition as when they left GTR, some panels had been painted into LM black/grey. The bog was OOU, the train wasn't particularly clean and the ‘London Connections’ poster was still the GTR poster! Mind, the 321s weren't exactly in a perfect condition either...

The jointed track and 319 thrash was much appreciated and I went as far up the line as I needed to and bailed at How Wood. It's a fairly basic single platform with a decent sized bike shelter on the platform... with two benches where the bike racks should be! I was disappointed that there were no Permit to Travel machines at any of the Abbey line stations. The 319 soon returned and took me to Garston. I alighted, making a mental note not to change for the 80A bus to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, and took a seat on the platform-where it started to rain... Annoyingly, it was ‘that fine rain that soaks yer' so I soon moved into the shelter. I knew it'd be fun on the 319 in these conditions! The PIS was helpfully displaying the next train as 06:04, and the departure time came and went...

I soon started to read the train had broken down-and the Help Point was being an ‘Unhelp Point' as it's one that connects to NRE. The unit turned up 8 late, and a decent crowd had now built up. I took a seat for the short but lively journey to Bricket Wood. Bricket Wood had a decent platform, with a station building present. It wasn't used-but still! The return working was again about 8 late and I boarded to travel to my last required shack on the line, Watford North. It was raining heavily while I was staring down the line to see where my train was but had nearly stopped by the time it arrived.
I took a seat in the shelter and an impressive turnaround was done at Watford Junction, and the train was only 3 minutes late when it returned. I took the unit to St. Albans and back, which was a lively ride. On approach to St. Albans Abbey, the guard proved his existence and told people to mind the gap. You'd easily be forgiven for thinking that this line was DOO-no ticket checks, no announcements (except for the one on approach to St. Albans, no staff presence whatsoever in the train, and dispatch merely being done by the guard sticking their head out of the cab window! People say that Merseyrail’s non commercial, not revenue trained (although quite a few are ex ticket office staff) guards are pointless (which is a view I strongly disagree with obviously) but they do, the vast majority of the time, provide a much appreciated staff presence. I won't say they never hide in the cab, but it's very rare-except in the underground where doors have to be done from the cab. But this is a whole new level!
I alighted back at Watford Junction in urgent need of a PNB, asked a member of staff where the Gents was-and realised I was talking to our very own Causton! We had a brief chat, then I hurried upstairs. I had 20 minutes until my next train, so I took advantage of a plug socket while I waited. I was hoping for a required 350/2, but wasn't too disappointed when 350120 turned up to take me to Long Buckby. The train was surprisingly busy, but I got a table seat (though I had to share it) for the hour long trip. It really shouldn't take an hour-but the train sits at Northampton for 15 minutes! I got comfy and got my tablet connected to Iplayer, which passed the time until Northampton quite well. The guard announced we weren't leaving for 15 minutes and invited people to stretch their legs. I went for a wander into the station as I've not seen the new building before. It's nice-but it seemed to just be a big open space, with a Starbucks inside to try and fill it a bit.

We soon left Northampton and I bailed 10 minutes later at Long Buckby. Not quite sure how I've not had this shack before-but anyway, I've had it now! 20 minutes later in the rain again, I was hoping for a required 350/2 to Rugby but it wasn't to be. Dud 350112 rolled in. Ah well... I spent most of the journey stood in a queue waiting to use the only working facility on the train, so I wouldn't have been bothered about the 3+2 seating had it been a /2 anyway. On arrival at Rugby, I noticed the Crewe train was about 6 minutes late. When it arrived, I found out why-as I'd got my wish of a 350/2! Unfortunately it was dud 350261... I was only going one stop to Nuneaton so I wasn’t bothered about the seating, but had I been going to Crewe I'd have been quite unimpressed.

At Nuneaton I bailed for the Coventry dogbox-153334+153364 were provided today and I soon found out why, an event at the Ricoh, sorry-Coventry-Arena. Great... I bailed at Bedworth, got a couple of much needed drinks from a nearby shop and waited for the dogboxes to return from Coventry. Next up was a short hop back to Bermuda Park for a 20 minute fester for the dogboxes to return from Nuneaton. They were well loaded on the return, but not too busy. A good crowd boarded at Bedworth (again) and we arrived into Coventry just as it went dark. The next LM service to New Street was at 16:50, but a double voyager pulled in on the Glasgow service. One of them was required 221118 so I got on it as quick as I could! One VT Voyager left! I stood in the vestibule as I'd boarded the first class carriage.

At Birmingham International, a lot of people boarded and the vestibule was very full indeed. It was nice to reach New Street, albeit about 12 late, for some fresh air and some space! I had an idea, which was risky-but could well work. I headed over to the Holyhead via Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantisiliogogogoch service formed of 158838+158819 and had a word with the guard. He very helpfully let me on to Telford Central where I had an 8 minute connection to the Brum train. The train was extremely busy and I was stood in the gap between 158838's carriages. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of time between New Street and Wolverhampton and were 12 minutes late. As such, I bailed at Wolverhampton. I was undecided whether to chase units or go for one of Cosford or Albrighton. Missing required 350239 sealed the decision. I waited for the late running 18:25 Shrewsbury service, getting some phone charge in the process.

A rammed pair of rancid 170s arrived, winner 170515 and dud 504. I was unable to board 515 so I ended up on 504-aren't Christmas markets great eh? I bailed at Cosford, grateful for the 10 minute delay as it reduced the 38 minute fester somewhat. A much emptier dud 170632 arrived to take me back to Wolverhampton. I got an ok seat and endured the dronage to Sandwell & Dudley as I had a lengthy fester at Wolverhampton. Dud 323216 arrived to take me to Wolverhampton-mmmm.... starship thrash! I had a much shorter wait at Wolverhampton than I would have had until 350372 rolled in a couple of minutes ahead of schedule to take me back to Runcorn. A table seat was bagged at Stafford for some charge and it was a very pleasant journey back to Runcorn, with a ticket check occurring just after Crewe.

I arrived into Runcorn on time at 21:15 and got a lift home. It felt weird being home so early, hopefully WM Trains will introduce a later service to Liverpool-at present, if you travel on the last Euston-Crewe which, at 18:46, is in itself far too early arrives at Stafford just as the last LM service Liverpool train leaves. Not good! Anyway, I'd still had a great day-and I have just 5 shacks left on LM (as well as needing to board at Polesworth). That's a plan for a West Mids Day Ranger...

‘A bit of everything’ 25/11/17

I did something I've not done for a wee while today-a Northern (mainly) day! I had two Trinity Mirror tokens to use, and the deadline was yesterday (Sunday) so I knew what to do!

The day started badly as I was intending to catch the 07:28 to Manchester, but forgot it doesn't exist in the Saturday timetable... as such-after a farce trying to use my RTV as it wouldn't scan (some things just never change...) I found myself on the platform waiting for the 08:02. It was very cold this morning! Dud 185111 arrived at 07:46, which I got permission to board. Having an empty section of the carriage on this particular train was weird as this was the train I used to catch on a daily basis and I'm used to seeing a 3 car roll in and being left behind! A decent crowd was picked up at Irlam and we arrived into Piccadilly on time. I decided I wanted a hot chocolate but after a wander around, with the exception of Greggs which had a huge queue, was struggling to find one for less than three quid! I suddenly wasn't thirsty...

But I was in need of a pacer! I boarded 142034 on a Rose Hill service as I haven't done the Hyde line for ages-it's strange being back on territory I used to bash every other day 18 months or so ago! The first evidence of snowfall was spotted around Fairfield, and there was a fair bit when the cold, empty pacer bounced into ‘Romiley International' (to quote an ex guard forum member) where I bailed out. I had 7 minutes here, some of which was spent watching, or rather hearing, the beast bounce towards Rose Hill and THAT curve! Soon I saw a very disappointing sight... dud 150204 rolling in to take me to Sheffield. BOO! Winner for the year at least, like most of the Northern 150 fleet! I really hate this things with a passion, and to get it on a long journey which is normally pacer dominated was a particular disappointment!

I tried-and failed-to get comfortable, but the scenery of the snow coated Hope Valley made the trip bearable. The train wasn't particularly busy at any point of it's journey-a long way from the last Hope Valley stopper I did that was standing room only until around Bamford! (I didn't do a report that day as I became quite ill on a 158 between Sheffield and Leeds and the bash got cut short-but hey I cleared 144s that day!) I bailed at Sheffield hoping for something better on my next move to Worksop, and I was in luck!

A very busy dud (obviously) 144004 bounced into Sheffield working my Lincoln service. I just managed to get a seat for the 25 minute journey to Worksop-where I had 3 things on my mind. Get a ticket, have a PNB and breakfast! Just over £5 was handed over in the cafe for a huge full English-with a ticket being sourced while I waited for my scran. Due to a printer fault, the ticket office staff were using a portable machine. I handed over £3.50 for a return to Shirebrook, managing to resist commenting that this was expensive bog paper...

I collected my breakfast and got a table on dud 158862 for the 20 minute journey to Shirebrook. The guard never reached me to check tickets, which was a good thing as it would have interrupted my delicious breakfast! I bailed at winner shack Shirebrook where I had a 10 minute connection before the next Northbound service. Unfortunately for me, it was running late... 9 minutes late to be precise! Not good news when I had 7 minutes at Worksop to connect onto the thrice weekly Cleethorpes service! I wasn't too impressed by this...

Dud 158889 rolled in bang on 9 minutes late, so I took a seat in the ‘First Class' area at the front of the train! The guard appeared and looked at my bog roll, commenting as such. I now had a difficult decision to make-go to Worksop and hope for the best, or stick with the Robin Hood. I opted for the latter and bailed at Whitwell, where a couple of youngish lads were filming the train depart. Thinking it was far too cold for spotting, and remembering that this line is now covered by EMT's PF scheme, I headed to the TVM to feed it some cash (see, NORTHERN, a shack being unstaffed is NOT an excuse to have a card only TVM!) for a return back to Langwith-Whaley-Thorns. Noting that it seemed like a very long way between platforms, I took a seat in the shelter (which was doing a good job of doubling up as a wind tunnel) for 20 minutes to wait for 158889 to return. It was 4 minutes late on the way back-and the guard seemed slightly surprised to see me again!

I bailed at the rather remote looking Langwith-Whaley-Thorns to await the Northbound service which, sticking to the pattern, was running late! The distance between platforms here seemed rather excessive too. Dud 156404 was my chariot all the way to Worksop-I was slightly disappointed not to see a winner, but that'd mean it being a 153 and I don't think they go as far as Worksop. The scenery isn't too bad on this bit of the line, but I was too busy investigating connections to properly appreciate it. I was glad I stuck with the RHL as the Cleethorpes train had sat down at Kiveton Park! Upon arriving at Worksop, I had a 40 minute wait for the Sheffield train. Sat on a freezing cold platform with a dead phone battery, this wasn't too pleasant! Eventually however, when the platform was much busier, dud 144019 arrived. I made damn sure I was amongst the first on-I'd waited long enough to then have to stand! I got a seat, but the train was certainly full and standing by Sheffield. The ‘long formed' train was certainly well appreciated!

Upon arrival at Sheffield, and as I result of knowing people, I sought permission to use TPE to Cleethorpes-which was granted by the guard. I was even happier to see I had a refurb! 185101 would be my chariot to Grimsby Town, as we were 15 minutes late. Still, about 50 fewer minutes of delay from the last time I was intending to travel on this guard's train! I took an airline seat (as I didn't have to fight for a table on here) until Doncaster where there was a mass exodus. I upgraded myself to a table for the remainder of the journey to Grimsby. I'd forgotten how much I like the line between Doncaster and Scunthorpe in particular, and it looks very good in the dusk. Arrival into Grimsby was about 15 down, where I bailed-thanking the guard as I did. On Grimsby Town approach, a 153 thrashed past which I was very concerned about! Spotting some veg on the platform, I asked what it was-and was told it was the 15:20 Cleethorpes-Sheffield, which had not to stop orders for Barnetby, Habrough and Worksop-Sheffield! Hellfire! It was a dud 153 thankfully, but I really wish I'd caught that!

My train would be winner 153331 on the Barton service. That is until I learn that the points have failed at Cleethorpes! 185101 was stopped at New Clee, which was blocking the dogbox in the platform at Cleethorpes! The points were soon(ish) repaired and 153331 arrived about 20 late. I boarded in the knowledge that I had just one pacer and two dogboxes to go out of the Arriva Rail North fleet-which was nice! We stopped at all the shacks obviously, which brought memories of 2014/2015’s Northern shack scratching back. Trust me, there's not really a lot at many of them! I bailed at Habrough, which has a decent pub by it. I've had a few cokes in there in the past, but I had just 8 minutes here tonight so there wasn't even time for a swift half. Well there probably was but I couldn't afford (literally) to miss this 185 and a level crossing had to be navigated!

One much shorter wait than expected later, 185101 returned. I took a table seat again, and the train was deserted. That is, until Scunthorpe where a load of football fans boarded. There was some chanting further down the train, but not a lot. Most of the fans near me were Londoners and I got the impression they got beat. If I were a Wigan rugby fan I'd be able to empathise but alas I couldn't...

I was intending to bail at Donny, but the ex Scarborough was late so remained onboard back to Sheffield. I had the Hope Valley stopper earmarked as my next move, which was thankfully running late as well (we'd lost 10 minutes between Donny and Sheffield!) However, upon seeing 150204 parked in the bay, I pulled a fishquinn and refused to get on it. My next option (which I can't deny may have been influenced by the opportunity to make a rude joke) was the Huddersfield stopper-however upon seeing one of the worst 150s in the Northern fleet in the platform, and that it was rammed to the rafters with kickball veg, that was very promptly flagged!

Fill in move time it was then! 153307 was taken to Meadowhall, containing some veg who bailed at Meadowhall with me. They told me 158843 was upfront-I hadn't checked as I knew it was dud, so didn't really care as I knew the unit I rode in. We crossed over and I went for a hot chocolate from the machine... which took my quid and ate it! After using a few expletives, I took a picture of the machine ID so I could email Selecta and complain. I don't often use station vending machines as they're thieving bar stewards at the best of times-but this is taking it literally! Incidentally the last time I used one was probably at Goring and Streatley back in May-that too ate my quid (kind of-it was a new one which the machine didn't accept (but the machine didn't say that) and the change slot was locked/jammed). I was quickly refunded via a high street voucher, which I bought a drink 4 times the size and nearly half the price of the one I was going to buy from the machine!

We boarded the next Sheffield service formed of dud (for all of us) 150134 (spend 18 months being avoided by something ect...) We stood around at Sheffield for a bit until my train home, them noting a required pacer on a Scunthorpe. Thankfully I too had a pacer, 142041, for the 88 minute journey back to Piccadilly. The ride was lively and fun as you'd expect, however the journey was as mind numbingly boring and dull as you'd expect it to be in the dark and Piccadilly couldn't come soon enough. That was until I got gen that something had gone Tango Uniform at Piccadilly and everything was running with delays. I was hoping to make a booked -8 onto the last Liverpool 319 express, but just missed it. Waiting around for the well over an hour for a wedgex stopper back to Birchwood was rather unappealing-I know last December on Saturday nights TPE were leaving many behind on their last Liverpool, with the stopper being just as bad.

An ATW service rolled in so I had a word with the guard, who thankfully allowed me travel, and boarded 175108 back to Newton-le-Willows. The train was empty! Most seats were taken, but there was no one standing at all! A far cry from the lottery of if you'll manage to board the train at all or, worse (as I get off at the first stop on the TPE), get off on the Cheshire Lines route! I alighted 20 minutes later calm and relaxed-making a mental note to definitely use that train in future (though with the appropriate ticket obviously) and got a lift home. A very good end to a very mixed day. Some shacks scored, including 2 of my 3 most local required shacks-the other being Creswell. That honour now passes to Creswell, Albrighton and Newstead (in that order.) Keep an eye on the reports next week-something quite special is potentially going to happen...

Sounds like a good day there. You're not alone in having a vending machine eat your money - I was parched while at Banbury one evening so used the machine and it just stole my money. Haven't used one since...

Sounds like a good day apart from the usual Northern delays. I don't approve of the cheeky dig at Wigan Warriors though!

Sounds like a good day in my local ish patch.
I would 100% take a 150 over a pile of crap sorry 142 any day of the week.
I hope you appreciated the superior EMT 153s/156s/158s over your usual Northern junk.

I haven't done the Robin hood line yet, I'll probably do it on a EM Rover, since the day return from Leicester to Worsop is very pricy.

A few busy days out there! Seems like some of the delays you picked up actually worked in your favour.

All those winners and shacks make me rather jealous....

Yeah, I have been a little quiet on here but my excuse is that I have been rather busy elsewhere selling books. As for my address, it is not St Helier. That just happens to be the nearest shack to my residence!

An exclusive picture of Keith's mansion, taken over summer time when it was sunny

Kite you made me laugh!

Keith, fair enough, it was assumed to be your locality!

185143, sounds like an interesting day there. I'd happily have the 150 over a 142, but that's me. Given the chance, I'd have popped into that pub at Haborough, but again that's me and we've all got different objectives!
