Good Greef, something about Hereford Station Lord Quest didnt know!!!!wow
at least that power socket will be of more use than HFD's booking office!, oh and whilst on the subject of Booking Offices I note Galton Bridge was closed yesturday when the website and NRE says it should be open. Reason for mentioning it is it looks very much as if LM are having issues at this station this week as it was also unstaffed when it should have been staffed on Tuesday and my Pre Booked Passenger assistance for interchanging there fell over causing me a delay.
I assume you went via HFD on cost grounds given you could have got the Marches service at Crewe, unfortunately for a near certain 170 tha
Ine is one of the worst.

nice work on shacks etc and despite doing all the stations (all of them) on the way back at least 172s can shift and dont drone as badly.

I'd have gone via Hereford on a Marches service:D

I knew what you meant though-and you'd be correct. I never even looked at the Marches service tbh-but I'm tight! I don't mind 172s really-I just wish they had tables and the temperature had been more acceptable!

Different definitions of acceptable I guess, Tuesday I went from a beutifully cool 395 to an acceptable S Stock to the Bakerloo to a stuffy but acceptable chilton MK3 to a sticky fester at BMOin a few hours so to step onto a turbofridge 172 was the nearest thing to an orgasm iv had for a bit lol.

A special #SaveAwaySunday 27/08/17

Two reports in two days?? I know. I don't normally report on my Merseyrail mileage bashes, as I'd never stop typing-but this one was something special.
The day didn’t start off too well, as the train I was going to get-the 12:03 from St. Helens Central into Liverpool was cancelled. As I already would have had a longish wait for it-and I wasn't willing to wait for ages, I decided I was going in on the bus.

As such, Rainhill was the station I got a lift to today. I went to the station to get my ticket, as for some daft reason they can't sell SaveAways on the bus-even if you have the pathetic bit of plastic Merseytravel have decided to call a Walrus Card. The ticket seller informed me I'd missed the train-as a train had left Rainhill 10 minutes ago, checked my driving licence (thanks to whoever from Northern/Merseyrail saw my complaints about that-I've not had a problem at all since I made that post!) And gave me a ticket. To the buses! Stagecoach MCSL's winner E300 number 27904 was taking me into Liverpool today on route 10A. The journey was, quite frankly, horrendous. The bus was busier than normal due to the train cancellation, and it took ages. Also, to the people sat in the middle of the bus, there's a time and a place for vodka shots, but on a full and standing bus in the middle of the day is NOT it!

Anyway, I made a note of the time we arrived at Lime Street so I could complain to Northern (12:52-I boarded nearly an hour previously) but stayed on to James Street. Feeling quite like we'd gone back to Phase 2 of the Wirral line track renewal works-I alighted at James Street and headed underground. To the trains! (Finally!) An Ellesmere Port service arrived, which I flagged as that route is so dull, and crap for mileage accumulation. A West Kirby arrived, which was flagged as I've had 250 miles on that unit (I'm trying to do it vaguely in stages, I tried not to use units I'd had more than 100 miles on until I had more than 75% of the fleet for 50 miles for example). A Chester arrived, formed of 508112, so I took that. I took a bay of 4 in the front coach over the motors for the 40 minute journey to Chester. Hooton-Chester comes in as my favourite part of the network, for the 70mph speed limit! The journey was great fun, as usual, and at Chester I had two choices to make. Stay on, or bail and wait for 30 minutes.

That's easy! Do both. Confused? I stayed onboard 508112 to Capenhurst (someone has to use that station!) And after a 7 minute fester picked up the Southbound service. Thankfully, it was a unit on less than 250 miles, 508131. It was however on 207 miles-something which was going to change. The 5 mile 12 chain journey back to Chester provided some amazing thrash, as ever. I started to work out how far I'd have to go to clear the unit for 250 miles, and soon had the answer. Capenhurst via Liverpool and Chester! The journey into Liverpool got fairly busy, but not too bad. A guard I know really well boarded at Birkenhead Central and he took the train for a few circuits. We had a catch up (inbetween the safety critical stuff a guard (and ONLY a guard) has to do obviously) for a bit, and I stayed onboard through to Chester. I needed a PNB fairly urgently, but due to the tight turnaround at Chester, there wasn't time. As such, I stayed on the train to Hooton.

The guard disappeared after Bache as someone pulled a bottle large bottle of vodka out of her bag-and all Merseyrail services are dry trains in line with the Merseyrail Byelaws. The passenger, who also had her feet on the seats-another byelaw-simply decided to call the guard a ‘bald headed b******’ and keep her feet and vodka where they were...

We said goodbye at Hooton, and by complete coincidence as they have free roam of their part of the network, 2 Byelaw Enforcement officers were waiting on the platform! The guard went over to them and asked them to ‘do him a favour’-which was presumably to go and deal with the abusive passenger! The Byelaw Enforcement officers have to stay on their side-either Northern or Wirral Lines. They are given lines to focus on-say, New Brighton and West Kirby but as long as they are being productive, as far as I know, they don't have to rigidly stick to their given route. It'd be a good job for an enthusiast if it weren't for all the people you have to deal with! Hopping on and off Merseyrail all day-yep, I can definitely see the appeal there!

I went for my very urgently required PNB, wandered into M to Go for something to do and came out with a £1 cola slush. As you do...

I therefore headed back to the Liverpool platform, due to my aforementioned dislike of the Ellesmere Port branch, picking up 508115. I had this unit on Friday-it still had its poster proudly proclaiming Merseyrail were the best train company in 2010 that I spotted on Friday. I have an eye for old posters on 508s-I found a map last year that predated Liverpool South Parkway! And Merseyrail not only let me have it, but actually posted it out to me. Because they're nice like that. (And I wasn't the Merseyrail Main Man back then...)

I soon was alighting at Moorfields for something very special. As I've already said, I don't normally report on my Merseyrail mileage bashes-but if I said my current mileage on the Merseyrail fleet for 2017 was 9,997 miles and 65 chains-you'll see why I've decided to do a report! I was Southport bound on 507004+507007. 004 was a welcome sight as it's been broken for ages! I didn't realise 007 was on the rear-I found out at Southport and was quite annoyed as that's without a doubt the thrashiest 507! At Bank Hall, exactly 2 miles and 15 chains from Moorfields, I ate my virtual cake sent by Merseyrail to celebrate. I did ask for real cake but that request was denied...

The trip up to Southport felt quite slow-we somehow lost 9 minutes on the way up to the Northernmost terminus of the 3rd rail network. It was nice to add just over 18.5 miles onto a low(ish) mileage 507 though. I got some phots of the unit when I alighted-I found my phot of the shack sign at Southport the other day with a unit wearing the previous livery in the background. I had a PNB and went to ID the front unit. Seeing which one it was, I took a seat onboard. At both Birkdale and Hillside, people were moving right up the platform and boarding in the 3rd carriage of the service. I was in there as I wanted mileage on 507007-however I got the impression my fellow passengers were all in there (coincidentally the unit that didn't have the guard in it(!)) For a different reason...

I bailed at Ainsdale for a chippy move and was waiting for the next service. However 508130+508117 arrived-both of which I've cleared for 250 miles so I flagged it. 15 minutes later (as that had been one of the re-instated bucket and spadexes) 508108+507023 arrived. I wasn't prepared to flag this as the next service was 30 minutes away. Thankfully 507023 wasn't cleared for 250 miles, so I took a seat on there. The train wasn't too busy, and I got a good seat without any trouble. I was going to be taking this train through to Hunts Cross but literally as I was about to type that (I'm typing this as I travel today), a couple a BTP officers entered the carriage and told us all we had to leave the train immediately, with the guard soon announcing the same thing. The BTP were taking an interest in the rear coach of the train, as were a couple of Byelaw Enforcement officers. It doesn't take a genius to work out what people were starting to think, given the world we live in...

Then we were all told to move to the Hunts Cross end of the platform-as far away from the rear unit as possible. Walking past the front coach of 507023, I immediately got a whiff of the problem. Something electrical, likely the traction motors given where I was, was on fire! It didn't seem too serious though as there wasn't much visible smoke-it was just the smell of it that was rather unpleasant. The platform was not evacuated, but I went upstairs to take advantage of a PNB once the train was cancelled. Obviously, I got a different smell in the bogs, but when I came out-the smell of 507023 was noticeable on the concourse level. It turned out a member of the public coming down the escalator noticed a problem and reported it to a BTP officer-no one on the train knew there was a problem...

I headed to the Wirral Line for a fill in move before my train home, 507013 providing some excellent thrash underneath the Mersey round to Birkenhead Central. I had a 7 minute fester-I could have probably made it to Green Lane, but decided to play it safe and bail at BC. After a short wait, I was soon watching the PEP come around the bend-it was 508115 again. I boarded and at Hamilton Square we picked up some Byelaw Enforcement officers I'd seen 3 times already! Most of them (and the guards) are used to me by now though-I used to get some really wierd looks!

Bailing at Lime Street, it was time to head upstairs. I was very surprised to see ex-Thameslink 319450 working the Manchester Airport service, only 3 319s are actually used on a Sunday! Anyway, I took an ex-First Class seat for the slog back to Newton-le-Willows. The stopper takes nearly 40 minutes-whilst the Monday-Saturday only express takes 20. The journey back wasn't too pleasant as many of the passengers were Liverpool FC fans who spent much of their journey expressing their dislike of Manchester...

I also have a dislike of Manchester but wouldnt active spoil someones rail journey talking about it. Well done on over 10K Mersy Miles, not something I could do, I found clearing the network once hard going enough with the acception of Chester which as you point out is a lot of fun.

Glad that unit didnt get so tosty that the service fell over, congrats again and thanks for sharing.

I don't mind people talking about something-that's acceptable enough in my eyes, I'm not the biggest fan of Wigan for example.

I draw the line at chanting 'Manchester (or anywhere else for that matter) is full of (a word that sounds a bit like shot)' though!

An opinion with which I generally agree but chanting it over and over on an all shacks Sunday train is just not very clever!

Drunken kickball fans, worst are Arsenal fans who sing various racist songs about other London based teams.

Congrats on getting to 10K on mereseyrail for the year

Had a 'meh' day today-and a right farce at the end. I'll get a report up tomorrow if I can be bothered! If not then it'll appear at some point in the near future...

Time for a change of scenery!-28/06/17

I know. 3 reports from 3 days of bashing. But that's the way these things happen sometimes! I fancied taking advantage of the bank holiday ticket relaxations and go further afield, rather than mileage accumulation on the Merseyside PEPs.

I did my usual thing of intending to go out really early (I was intending to go further south) and then waking up really late, so I decided Nottingham was my destination for today. I got a lift to Stockport, (something that may not happen for too much longer given I passed my theory test just 26 hours later!) purchased my ticket, and headed up to Platform 0. I was lucky in that the 10:54 Peterborough service was formed of a pair of refurbished 158s-with USB sockets. That went down well! I boarded 158846 for the scenic 40 minute journey through the beautiful Hope Valley. I bailed out at Sheffield as I wanted to bring my red pen out. As such, I went for a supply raid and then went over to the 222 on the London Platform.

Winner! 222010 was working the 11:49 St. Pancakes service, which I would take as far as East Midlands Parkway. I took a seat in the half first class, half standard coach for free wifi and immediately noticed the sticker by the plug socket saying ‘mobile phones and laptops only'. This seems sensible enough at the time the 222s were introduced, but what about tablets? The guard commenced a ticket check immediately on departure. I heard her informing the posh people on the other side of the ‘partition' that they could get complimentary refreshments, but they would have to go to the buffet counter for it. When she got to me, noticing my T-shirt with the entire pre-TfL Rail tube map on it, she assumed I was going to St. Pancakes-and seemed quite surprised when I pulled my Nottingham ticket out! Its the little things like that that seem to put EMT guards (in particular) above the rest. Simply taking 5 seconds to acknowledge the passenger and wish them a nice day is so much better than when the only interaction you get is ‘tickets please'. I tweeted about this and a few people agreed that EMT guards are usually great.

Not much was visible at Derby, as I'd inadvertently sat on the wrong side of the train. Ah well. I'd have plenty of time later...

I alighted at East Midlands Power Station-err... Parkway just under 10 minutes later, where I had an 8 minute fester for a Nottingham bound service. Here's the real reason why I came via this route-43047+43083 were working the next Nottingham service! I stood in the furthest forward public vestibule with the droplight down and OH MYLORDZ I'd forgotten how good EMT HSTs sound! I was soon distracted from the thrash however by an RPI asking for my ticket, and after not very long at all I was bailing at Nottingham-one of my favourite stations. I really don't get how it could possibly be ranked as one of the worst stations in the country!

I had time to purchase a Kangaroo ticket, which is now a Robin Hood ticket and headed up to the NET. I boarded a tram straight away which announced ‘This tram is for Old Market Square'. Hmm... I immediately alighted (as the tram was dud anyway). There was a 5 day closure between Old Market Square and The Forest. Great... I returned to the Heavy Rail station and boarded a train to Bulwell instead. Or so I thought. I was on a Worksop service-which meant it didn't stop! I thought it was Hucknall they sometimes skipped but no. As such I bailed at Hucknall, for the second time in my life-but as I've never boarded the shack is still required. I took dud tram 204 back down to Bulwell as a fill in move and awaited the train from there. An oven, masquerading as 156408, soon arrived on a Mansfield service. I took this back to Hucknall (again!) And awaited a service back to Bulwell. 156401 arrived 15 minutes later which quite a few people were waiting to board. I alighted again at Bulwell-now being able to fully count both Bulwell and Hucknall shacks.

To the trams! Or possibly not... there was a tram in the platform with all it's doors closed and about 5 people stood outside it. We were all questioning why the driver wasn’t releasing the doors. A passenger on the tram answered that for us by mouthing ‘its broken' through the window...

Tram 233 soon became un-broke and we were allowed to board. I hadn't realised I only needed 8 trams in total-and none of them were north of The Forest. As such I headed to The Forest for the tram replacement bus. NCTs Omnidekka number 747 was on the tram rep, and was hotter than the core of the earth! I wasn't onboard for very long though, the bus seemed to just go down the road a bit and then park in a lay-by. Well, NET, I must say as a visitor to the city your handling of this left a lot to be desired. Dropping people off 2 stops BEFORE where the trams are starting is bad enough-however I accept sending buses into Old Market Square to where the platforms are would be easier said than done. My main issue was with the exceptional amount of signage you put up. It was 100% clear from the second I alighted the bus until the second I reached Old Market Square's platforms exactly which direction I was meant to be going. In case you can't tell-I'm being sarcastic! Not one sign to direct people! Though to be fair, there was a member of staff at the intermediate station I walked past, however many other people had the same idea as me once we found it.

I got to the platform to see a very welcome sight of a tram departing. Great. Dud 226 was along shortly though and I was soon back at Nottingham Railway Station. I was after Attenborough at this point, and I'd been concerned I was going to miss the train-but thankfully I didn't. I was checked by the same RPI as on the HST onboard a very warm 156403, complete with trolley service. Are they just going back to Derby-or is the Matlock service actually booked to have a trolley?

I alighted at Attenborough to see a rather unpleasant sight. A pair of dogboxes approaching! After swearing a bit, I ran for them and due to being unable to find the entrance to the Nottingham platform, the guard closed her local door as I was about a 153 length away from it and off she went. Arse. That's me stuck here for an hour now! Kite159 suggested a stroll to the lake, which was what I did. It was really nice actually-and I was almost reluctant to return to the station! But eventually of course, I did. In good time for the 16:32 Newark Castle service formed of dud 156403. One of the dogboxes I missed was required too...

Alighting at Nottingham, I saw something very rare. 153s on the Liverpool are becoming more common these days, but the 16:47 had TWO! 153310+153384+158866 were all sat in Platform 7 working the 16:47 to Scouseland. What a lash up! I was half tempted to get on and go home! But I resisted temptation.

Knowing the trams were all Tango Uniform, I decided Heavy Rail was the place to stay. I was also in need of some phone charge, so I boarded 222019 for a bus stop bash to Beeston. My plan here was simply to wait for a winner, and try not to melt. An XC 170 arrived and I was thankful it was dud so I didn't have to take it! A 222 running 25 late from St. Pancakes soon arrived. 222007-winner! I parked my rear in a carriage which had failed air con and, quite honestly, 5 minutes onboard was plenty!
A +2 was on offer to the XC service to the Bat Cave. I made it due to a preceeding train departing late. I boarded winner 170114 and it was lovely! Yes, I just said that about a 170! It was lovely and cool onboard the train-and I really didn’t want to get off! (Never said that before on a 170!) I commented to the guard when I alighted that his train was lovely and cool to which, having not been in the passenger compartment yet, he asked if I was being sarcastic! I headed over to the other platform (again!) And awaited a Nottingham service. Another dud XC 170! I decided to take it though as I didn't have lots of time left, and I needed to get a drink before the journey home. I was almost tempted to complain that this train was too cold-it was absolutely freezing!

I was going back home via the same route I came in-unfortunately the 18:32 Nottingham-St. Pancakes is part of the same diagram I arrived on. So I had 43083+43047 again back to East Midlands Parkway. I was surprised to be ticket checked in that time, again by another really friendly guard. I was sad to bail from the HST at East Midlands Parkway, but it unfortunately had to be done.

After a short fester, winner 222009 rolled in to take me to Derby-making sure I sat on the right side this time! It was rather warm on here too-but not too unpleasant. I alighted at Derby as I wanted to pick up the 19:43 XC HST to Sheffield. This meant I had about half an hour to waste. After about 15 minutes, I looked up at the screen and saw ‘delayed'. Fantastic(!) I checked RTT and saw a freight had sat down at Burton-on-Trent, and my HST was stuck behind it. Eventually it got moving, just over 30 late-but that was no good to me. I had a 14 minute connection at Sheffield. Which was now an 84 minute connection. Yay...

43357+43304 were my winner XC power cars for today. It's always nice to score a HST, but can I honestly say it was worth a 90 minute delay to my journey? I don't honestly think I can. Upon arrival at Sheffield, the staff confirmed what I already knew-that the next Manchester service was the 22:11. This was not welcome gen! I asked if there was anywhere better to fester than the waiting room-Burger King was suggested but it was closed! I wandered out to find a shop that didn't require me to mortgage my house, walking past a 24 hour off licence that was closed(!) A takeaway was soon sourced and taken back to the station. I headed over to platform 6 just before 10pm-refurbished 185101 was in the platform! Hellfire! That is... until the guard went through it locking it out! I expressed my displeasure of this to the guard, who told me ‘you'll get your chance soon enough'. Well he’s right-but that's not the point!

I can see why it was locked out though-I was sat right at the back of 185146 on the rear, I had the entire section between the doors and the cab to myself! I witnessed a fellow passenger arguing with the guard about his EMT and Connections advance on the 18:47 Nottingham-Manchester. The passenger initially refused to pay, and the guard threatened him with BTP at Stockport. I was very tempted to go and tell him to get 2 BTP officers out as I'd kick off after the journey I’d had, the slightest of delays would mean I'd be stuck at Piccadilly for a while waiting for a taxi, but the passenger paid before that became necessary.

We'd picked up some delay, only a couple of minutes, but enough to make my connection look less probable. We were helpfully routed into Platform 2, and I had 3 minutes to reach my train from platform 14...

Thankfully I made it-and I've not been that glad to hear a train full of people from Liverpool for quite a while! 185126 was the unit taking me home at the end of a long and not too successful day. Sure, some bits were very good-but the tram farce and the massive delay incurred at Attenborough and Sheffield kinda ruined it... ah well.

Didn't you know the Robin Hood ticket isn't valid on EMT services to Hucknell, only on trams? (Valid as far as Bulwell on EMT). It will be interesting to see if you get lucky with that delay repay claim from XC :)

Croeso y Cymru! 31/08/17

Day 1

Today was the day! I had originally considered an Explore Wales Flexipass-but decided that the time travelling to and from South Wales each day would be too much, so settled on a North+Mid Wales pass. I arrived at Warrington Bank Quay and purchased a ticket to allow me to travel via Chester. I also asked for a North Wales Flexipass but was given an all Wales pass. I hadn't realised initially as I questioned whether my railcard had been added. It had been, so I knew I had the wrong ticket. The clerk showed me a list of rangers and rovers they had in the ticket office (what a good idea!) And showed me the one he'd issued. The North+Mid Wales Flexipass wasn't there... but a quick look on BRFares meant I soon had my tickets in hand. I was planning to purchase the rover in Chester but that would have been inconvenient.

Dud 175008 kicked off the start of the rover with the 08:24 Holyhead service. I showed my rover +ticket to Chester and asked for Llanfairfechan, however I was told to ask the guard after Chester as he was bailing. The train was fairly well loaded-there were few empty seats but no standees, a 2 car 175 was pretty much perfect capacity-wise for this service. There was a mass exodus at Chester and not many people seemed to board. I suddenly noticed quite a few strong Irish accents in the carriage, a quick look on RTT showed a ferry connection at Holyhead-which would explain it! The journey along the coast was lovely-though would be better had I remembered which side of the train to sit on for the ocean views!

I alighted at Llanfairfechan with one other passenger for a 12 minute fester before heading back to the Junction. North Wales Coast cleared! (Just over a year after I realised I'd missed it whilst on a vomiter home from Bangor) There were a couple on the Chester bound platform speaking to each other in fluent Welsh-it's always surprising to hear actually just how well spoken Welsh is, I normally hear quite a few people speaking Welsh when I cross the border. Most English people seem to regard it as a dying language that's rarely spoken-that’s really not the case at all! Dud 158841 arrived to take me back to Llandudno Junction, stopping at both of the other request stops again.

Next on my list was the Conwy Valley line. I'd bailed at Llandudno Junction 6 minutes before the Bleanau Ffestiniog train departed-what a coincidence(!) 150237 was my chariot for the next few hours, dud of course as all Arriva 150s are. My first shack was Dolwyddelan, shack number 1400. I took the opportunity for a supply raid in the 40 minute fester I had there. Once the rain stopped, annoyingly, 150237 returned. I requested Dolgarrog, and I was the only person to do so. No one boarded either and after nearly 40 minutes of 150 thrash and jointed track I alighted at Dolgarrog. At 75 minutes, this was to be my longest fester of the day. The weather kept changing from being sunny, then cloudy, then rainy, then sunny, then rainy... MAKE YOUR MIND UP CLOUDS!

The fester went quite quickly before rejoining 150237, this time to the request stop of Roman Bridge. I alighted from the train and immediately fell in love with it. What a view! I was very surprised to find a few other enthusiasts on the platform-a bloke and 2 kids on holiday from West Yorkshire. We sat chatting for a while until eventually 150237 came back round the bend. We said goodbye and I boarded the train again-they were visiting stations in North and Mid Wales by car.

I went back up this beautiful line to Tal-Y-Cafn, a request stop in the Northbound direction, but mandatory on the way back-due to the level crossing. This of course meant that there was a crossing keeper/signaller at the station. We enjoyed a nice chat for 20 minutes or so-the good thing about Geoff Marshall and Vicki Pipe's adventures for me is that people don't think you're *that* insane for doing it! Though most people I've spoke to seem quite disappointed when I correct them and say that Geoff and Vicki only stopped at the stations. That doesn't quite have the same sense of achievement somehow compared to getting on AND off...

Anyway, the train soon(ish) returned from Llandudno to take me down to Llanrwst. Llanrwst was one I'd been looking forward to for a while. Why? North Wales was now complete! I had 70 minutes here, and it was early evening so a trip to the chippy was in order! A £3 Llanrwst special was sourced-comprising of fishcake, chips and gravy (of course!) I devoured that on the station and the 150 returned after a rain shower. The unit was fairly empty and, for the first time today, I secured one of 150237's table seats for the journey up to Cyffordd Llandudno. Upon arrival at LLJ, the 18:31 non stop to Chester was just missed (BOO!) so I took the 18:39 stopper instead.

I wasn't too impressed to see dud 158820, unofficially named ‘Damien' working this service-but it was merely a fill in move. An empty table was sourced for some much needed phone charge. I bailed at Flint, as that coincided nicely with a VT Voyager that I needed heading Westbound. The Cardiff-Holyhead WAG was cancelled, shame as continuing to Chester and picking that up would have also been an option. Alas, winner 221112 (FINALLY A WINNER!) arrived and I boarded a well loaded Coach C. A couple of seats were found and the phone went back on charge for the journey back to Rhyl. Why Rhyl? Well, the Voyager passes something between there and Colwyn Bay that I wanted to catch!

I alighted at Rhyl and, after a 15 minute fester, watched a DVT lead 4 mk3 coaches and required Skip 18 into the platform. My intended destination was Crewe-but upon discovering the connection was crap, I took the decision to bail at Chester. It was dark by now, so most of the 35 minute journey was spent reading the latest edition of RAIL and thinking about where to go on Day 2. Upon arrival at Chester-after slamming a couple of doors that normals couldn't be bothered doing, I headed over to platform 3 for the Manchester train where an unpleasant surprise was waiting... DAMIEN!

I boarded regardless and, surprisingly it didn't break down before Warrington Bank Quay! I alighted at the end of a great day-with everything between Craven Arms and Shrewsbury cleared, plus the Conwy Valley and Borderlands lines. Which line I would do on Day 2 was therefore an easy decision. Which shacks however... was not!

Day 2 to follow!

Sounds good other than the weather and the 158, mind you the 175 you missed doesnt feature sockets so no charging up there.

I might be asking you for advice for October if there is anything worth while around the stations (i.e. shops)

Congrats on clearing North Wales...

Day 3 of my rover was a bus filled day-would people be interested in a report on that?

Day 2 is coming, honest!

Day 2
Today was not only a Northern/Merseyrail strike day-but it was also September 1st which, as every 16-25 railcard holder will know, is when things get more expensive! As getting to Chester on ATW in the morning peak is rather expensive, I got a lift there instead. My first move of the day was on required 158837, which is always a good start! I was on the 09:26 Cardiff service which was fairly well loaded and, very unusually, runs non-stop from Shrewsbury to Newport! Is this service normally a 158? Anyway, as nice as a winner always is, I would have preferred a 175 or even a 150. Why, I'm sure you're wondering! Simple-I’d like some variety, I'm headed to the Cambrian Coast!

The journey down to Shrewsbury was very pleasant-the scenery is much better than going via Crewe I think. (And I say that as a Cheshire man!) It's been rather a long time since I last covered this line-late 2015 IIRC. The guard made a couple of announcements on the approach to Shrewsbury that the service was running non-stop to Newport, and lots of people seemed to alight at Shrewsbury. I had a 5 minute connection, which was extended slightly due to a set swap. I was very grateful for this set swap, as the planned unit was my new stalker-Damien! Dud 158823 took me right the way through to Aberystwyth on the 10:30 service. I think I might have a new favourite railway line... Mach to Aberystwyth is beautiful! I had a bit of a leg stretch outside the station during the turnaround to look at some buses before reboarding 158823 back to Dovey Junction.

Dovey Junction is a dud shack, but I hadn't really taken in the magnificence of it last time-as I had about 2 minutes to change trains due to a delay, and it was dark when I passed through on the return that night. Lots of people were changing onto the Pwllheli train, formed of dud 158838 which upon arrival I noticed the front coach had its windows open. Oh dear...

Thankfully the rear coach was nice and cool! I boarded the fairly busy train and took a seat at a table opposite a lady travelling from Wolverhampton to Pwllheli (ouch!) I soon realised I was on the wrong side of the train for the scenery-ah well, I'll be back (he types on an Aberystwyth bound 158 on Day 4!) There was a slight delay at Tywyn due to a delay on an ex-Pwllheli and we left nearly 10 late as a result. Thankfully, there isn't really a ‘wrong side' to film going over Barmouth Bridge, both are equally as stunning! We were back on time after I scored the required track between Llandanwg and Harlech, and we were talking for a while-along with me mentioning ‘You'd have been in Edinburgh 10 minutes ago had you boarded that train'-but as she rightfully said, ‘I'd have been there a couple of hours ago had I driven-but you can look at the scenery better from the train’ Having driven down to North Llanrwst myself-that's something I'd certainly agree with. We pulled into a platform-me with a fair bit of stuff on my half of the table. ‘Where's this?’ ‘err.. Minffordd' ‘SH*T!’ I made it off the train just as the hustle alarm started to sound.

I had a wander up to the Ffestiniog Railway, however nothing was due until 10 minutes before my train. As such, I returned to the shack for the rest of my 65 minute fester. Geography kindly gave me a nice photo opportunity, as the Ffestiniog Railway crosses over the Cambrian line. As such I could phot the mini kettle from the platform as it passed overhead! The Ffestiniog Railway timetable gave me another photo opportunity as the train passed another one at Minffordd station.

158838 returned, and I immediately went for a rather urgently needed PNB. I was going for my shortest fester of the day now, at Tygwyn. The guard warned me it was a short platform but I wasn't ready for THAT! It was longer than Sugar Loaf and Gilfach Fargoed, but probably not much! Sugar Loaf actually felt a lot bigger than it actually is, presumably due to the insane remoteness of it! Soon I saw the Pwllheli train approaching. I signalled it to stop, and made a rude gesture towards it as I boarded. ‘kin Damien AGAIN! I requested Aberech, another fairly short platform with local door only. The ride right along the coast up at the Pwllheli end is rather nice, and I bailed at the station which seemed to serve not much more than the caravan park and campsite. After half an hour or so, Damien returned. I was travelling as far as Porthmadog this time-as 3 and a half hours on Damien was rather unappealing to say the least, along with a crap connection north at Shrewsbury.

I bailed at Porthmadog and went for a much needed supply raid before boarding Lloyds Coaches TrawsCymru branded Optare Metrocity YJ16 DYT for the hour journey to Bangor. These buses are pretty decent, with Strong and Stable wifi and comfy seats, but sadly no charging facilities. Not that I needed them anyway fortunately. The bus journey was beautiful-it took me past scenery you wouldn't see from the train as it heads inland. As it's a TrawsCymru route, it sticks entirely (almost) to the main roads too. Sticking with the comments I made about how much Welsh is actually spoken-I noticed out of the 5 passengers to alight at Bangor Railway Station-I was the only one who didn't say ‘Diolch’ to the driver!

I had two Eastbound services I could take-the 20:00 ATW service or the 20:20 VT voyager. The voyager was sat in the middle road-dud 221113. I decided to see what the ATW unit was but, as it was a dud 158 with failed air con, it was promptly flagged. The voyager pulled into the platform shortly after the 158 departed. Before we departed, the Train Manager-accompanied by the Heddlu, conducted a full ticket check. He looked confused by my rover-asked where I was travelling to (Chester) and said that was fine. It went dark on the journey, and I did my usual thing of sitting on the wrong side AGAIN. Not that it mattered for long though-but the view through the window of the coastline at dusk looked rather different!

We soon (so it seemed) arrived into Chester-a good trip as it was a nice change from 158s which I'd been on all day. I can practically hear the screams from Leamington as I type this! I had about 15 minutes at Chester, so I headed to the warm waiting room until my train home arrived. I had dud 158829 back to Warrington Bank Quay and it was only as it arrived, I remembered I didn't have a ticket! I explained to the guard before boarding I'd been on a rover all day and the thought had just entered my mind and he was more than happy to sell me the appropriate railcard fare. Unfortunately I got a bog roll ticket for doing this...

I was also rather unimpressed to see yet another 158! The train wasn't very busy (aside from the front vestibule between Helsby and Frodsham with a group of kids intending to avoid paying-Unfortunately they were successful too. It was nice to be back home at the end of a long and rather tiring day!
