Reliably told a 185 today had an identity crisis and reinvented itself as a barbecue at Marsden.

Small fire in the underframe I hear.

Now if only the rest would follow suit so that TPE could have some new, lighter units that dont bash the b'jesus out of the track and can run at Sprinter speeds on certain lines. <D<D

Does anyone else get confused when there are two posts in a thread by different people who have the same avatar?

(didn't know about the 185 though)

That used to happen to me on Freightmaster, I had the same avatar as someone else, reading a thread I thought, I didn't post that. But it was someone else.
Anyway, does anyone know which 185 it was?

Thanks, Sam.

i agree with you on many things West Coast, but this aint one of them - I like 185s best when there in bits on the dump!
Doubt even desperate northern would want them.

In al seriusness though, more strain on TPE and its fleat cant be a good thing.

If the problem had occurred whilst inside the Standedge tunnel, would there have been any major problems?

At least if it was at Marsden station they could possibly use the other platform to allow trains to pass - bit screwed if it was in the tunnel, massive delays for all North TPE services and the HUD-MCV stoppers.

It's not just sprinter speeds they don't qualify for, 185s don't quailify for any differential speed limits. They have to travel at the same speed as LHCS would, which of course means that they could be replaced by suitably powerful LHCS without affecting the timetable...

Makes what I saw yesterday on NRE make sense now as it said there was a broken down train near Slaithwaite...bit different to Marsden though!

Does anyone have any idea yet as to which one decided to reinvent itself?

Northern would take them.... They took on 125mph 180s, despite their unsuitability for local, stopping services..

I'd have a 185 over a pacer. The fact that 185s are stretched to Scotland services (when really something like a 180 should be doing that route) is not the fault of the unit itself.

I think the 185s work very well on TPE North West, where there are fairly frequent stops and the average journey is about an hour. Most passengers like them on this route, if only they were 4-car.

It wasn't really Northern's decision to take the 180s. DfT admitted they ****** up the Manchester-Preston flows by removing through Windermere services in Dec 2007, so wanted Northern to plug that gap in the Dec 08 timetable change. Northern's 'spare' 142s had gone to FGW and the DMUs with LM and LO due for replacement weren't ready to be replaced yet.

I suppose Northern could have obtained loco hauled stock instead but that wouldn't have been any more commuter style than the 180s.

I quite agree, but I still believe the 185s are decent units and shouldn't end up on a scrap heap! I know that's a joke, but still...
