I've always liked Maunsell engines, so I'm liking that.

Based on a U? class... or is it N? Or U1 or N1? Is there any difference between the two?

Not very clued up on Southern Railway, the Q1 was the 'spam can', used to get them on freight workings from Hither Green to Stratford via Whitechapel ELL Station.

1803 reminds me of a schools class.

Heres the lecture!

The River Tanks (K class) Where prone to derailing so were rebuilt into U Classes, from 790 to 820 ish some where i think, so this model is a U Class Believe it or not it was a great western loco, once resident of the Saltwood Miniature Railway, i was brought by John Davis and converted into a southern engine, it already had outside vavle gear which made the job easier. Back to the point, U classes have bigger wheels than N class thus meaning U classes have Splashers, but i fink is the only difference!

U1s and N1s were the three cylinder version of each class,

As for Q1s being spam cans, that is wrong

The unrebuilt bullied pacifics were known as spam cans because of there shape, things like Tangmere etc.

A schools Class is a 4-4-0 loco, Class V.

As u can probably tell my specalist subject is southern locos lol,

Chertsey, a pathetic town in the south
my favourite memory is being on a brake van trip at the Bluebell when my uncle was doing his firing course with the legend Clive Groom. I always look back at the time a 6 year old me correctly pointed at the preserved Q1 (it was in SR black and numbered C1, blummin awsome) and loudly yelled "CHARLIE!!!!" (locoman nickname for Q1). The looks on the faces of all the old BR drivers including Mr Groom was gold!

Would I agree with you on 1803 Stephen? Hmmm, difficult to say really. Its alright when it gets going I guess but the fact I had to hold the regulator all the time to keep power on really got on my nerves. It went up banks ok, didn't like the whole "fall below 60 PSI and DIE!!!" thing. Good injector, pumped the water up fine. But would you believe it, you're dad had de-scaled the boiler recently, and a load of magic foam was in the glass, and wouldn't go!!! So my boiler level was basically half a glass, with a load of oily rubbish filling the rest. The chimney really needs boring out (btw I'm repeating Stephen's own words now!!) as the exhaust is the same from dead slow to flat out so it sounds like its really working hard when its tootling along.

BUT the one thing I REALLY want to quote from Stephen (sorry mate I never forget anything!) and I quote (I assure you he said this):

"bloody 1803, its a pansy engine"

I do believe he'd been driving 34051 (flipping powerful Bulleid pacific thats amazing and I love it and it goes really well......) that day so I don't really blame him :)

1803 is awesome it steams well and goes pretty quick if you're prompt with the 100% regulator! Give me my black 5 though, its a less than perfect engine, which makes it more fun!

I have such a long way to go before I hit my favourite engines number, although I will rejoice when I hit 837, now thats an engine...
