its massively late.. no arrival as such at Preston. Is this train broken down? due to terminate for rail replacement? or an NR error

Showing as leaving Lancaster at 0009, 211 late and 30 minutes overdue at Preston. Delayed by a train fault according to LDB.

Preston departure screens showed the 20:58 London Euston service as cancelled around 21:30. It had previously been showing as 'delayed'.

The train failed near Lancaster and was assisted by a 57/3. I saw the train just south of Lancaster around midnight.

Cancelled at Preston (but that can be wrong, I've known trains to be shown as cancelled then turn up as they were un-cancelled but no-one updated LDB). They would have got the following train to Crewe at 0128, but it is unknown whether a special would have been laid on at Crewe or whether a bus would have then been provided. Probably not a lot of passengers at that time so probably a bus or two.

They do, I was 8 minutes early into Euston yesterday

I noticed one of the Sleepers was cancelled yesterday evening too

I wonder how they compare to the HST and 91's.

The 91 if it fails you are stuck, no if's no buts as it is just 1 loco. The Pendo is 2 traction packages so can one fail and the other continue or does a failure normally disable the whole train. I know HSTs can and do continue on one power car but I don't know if the single loco is a higher risk in winter weather than distributed traction?

There are still problems with Pendolinos in terms of reliabilty...i dont venture on the West Coast Much these days but last time i did i was on 87002 in Sept and when we came through Crewe there was a Pendoliono just been removed from service with a load of fitters around it. HSTs dont tend to struggle in extreme temperatures but electric traction tends to but ive done many 87s in the frosty weather and they never failed on me

Are you having a laugh? Pendos have formidable performance, and are climbing rapidly up the league tables. They are used more intensively at higher speeds for longer than any of their XC/EC/EMT/FGW counterparts and have higher reliability through and through.

Pendos are one of the most reliable intercity trains, beaten only by their own and XC Voyager family.

They have yet to beat the 91 and Mk4 in the modern railways survey. I don't know if they have this time around or not we will find out in 3 weeks time. But as you say it is hard to compare apples with apples in terms of the diagrams and they are a lot more complex as well so the old more to go wrong situation.

One thing I was thinking about, in the snow of 1991 BR removed the 91s and hauled the mk4s with anything they could. But that is back to the hauled stock -v- multiple units. Not that it could happen again but if the 91s can't take the snow at least the coaches can be hauled. Not as easy with a unit but I think overall units are the way forward.

We've had more than a "bit of talcum powder" this week. I should know, being one of the many hundreds of folk in Scotland who were stranded because of this "talcum powder".

Its happened again, this time missing out Lancaster.. not sure how it could have diverted?

However saying it will take 4 hours from MK to Euston.. error or?
