175s into Birmingham

Hello,

According to wikipedia: "One Sundays only diagram sees the units travel from Holyhead to Birmingham New Street via Stafford."

What time is this at? I wasn't aware of any 175s still serving Birmingham, I know they have in the past but I certainly wasnt aware of any present running.

There is an Class 175 last year which arrives at Stafford at 2115 to Birmingham New Street, i was on the train from Rhyl to Stafford

The 1926 Chester to Birmingham International and 2211 Birmingham International to Shrewsbury (both calling all stations between Chester/Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton/Shrewsbury) are booked 3 car 175 on a Sunday only.

I have been on a class 175 from Birmingham New Street to Smethwick Galton Bridge on a weekday in the last 3 months, very occasionally they'll sub a 158 with a 175. As nice as it is to have a lovely comfortable 175 now and again, it is only two or three coaches as opposed to the six-coach 158 you normally get.

don't get too excited as you'll see in another thread the Welsh Assembly government are paying ATW to run yet another 175 diagram on the North to South Wales run. 27 Units can only do so much.

Yes from May to December(could be longer) WAG are paying for a three coach
175 to ply yet another service between Holyhead & Cardiff with a 6 hour idle in Cardiff,so look forward to a 158 if you are lucky.

Due to the ATW unit diagrams a 175 will only be used as a last resort during the week as the ATW 158 unit diagrams all include Birmingham and Aber in their diagrams. As for a 6 car I think you mean a 4 car as I have never seen a 6 car 158 into Birmingham.

Is it contracted to idle in Cardiff? I'd innocently assumed that it would be available to do whatever while down south. It could, say, operate a Swanline service or two during the day instead of a 150.

In fact, didn't the ghost timings or draft originally show the northbound starting at Swansea?

yes the 18:21 Cardiff - Holyhead service starts from swansea at 17:10 so i would guess that the stock would either run empty to Swansea or form the 15:14 Cardiff - Swansea (Arr 16:19) service. Either way commuters on this service will be happy to have more than the current class 153 which is frequently overcrowded and cannot run to time holding up the london service begind even though it leaves swansea 20 minutes before it.
