Reports that 175001 has been taken out of service while working a llandudno to Manchester service after its turbo or something caught fire nr Rhyl.

Hope its not too serious and can be repaired quickly as ATW are going to need all the trains they can get in september.

Somewhere, not in London
depends on the gasget, but unless theres contamination damage, then replacing the gasget n changing fluids is a 2hr job, but they may want to check other parts

Spontaneously combusting 175s were a problem when they were being used at FNW.

One was going up in smoke at Preston, if I remember right, I looked at my wreck of an Arriva Trains Northern 155 and thought.. mines not all that bad after all :)

They really should have ordered Class 170 Turbostars like every one else. The 175s weren't and maybe still aren't a good advert for Alstom's products.

So basically, after all this fuss over a fire, and all we had was a blown gasket.

tell that to the passengers, the pictures in the press show the 175 with smoke bellowing out of and around the carriages, to all intents it was a fire, hence full evacuation.

I was just joking. It's still a very serious incident, I agree.

175s are far superior trains to 170s.

How anybody want to sit on a pseudo-commuter 170 for anything over 2 hours is mad. Absolutely useless for anything long distance like Manchester - Cardiff. 175s are small Intercity trains with an lovely amount of legroom and now having very good reliability problems compared to when they were new.

I personally believe the Class 175 is an excellent train and MORE should of been ordered, as they are perfect for services which are not quite Regional and not quite Intercity

The Class 175 is now one of the most reliable units in its class of post 94 regional DMU, last year only NXEA 170's and the 185's were better. So far this year it has passed the 170 and is just short of 185, a number of reliability mods are still ongoing and by the end of the year it will probably be best in class. A lot of hard work has been put in by the staff at Chester to make what is the most comfortable train in class one of the most reliable.
As for the fire i'm sure it was a frightening experience for the passengers , but unfortunately turbos will fail from time to time and oil going into an exhaust system will make a lot of smoke. At no point was anybody at risk and 175001 was back in action this morning.

It's a long time since I traveled on a 175. 37s were still hauling some North Wales trains so that dates it a bit. It's pleasing to hear that they've sorted out the reliability problems that I remember.

Good to know. They're very nice trains, only real shortcoming is no plugs and wi-fi, and maybe a small First Class section?

Sorry don't know of any plans at the moment, I'd imagine the only way it would be likely to happen if the WAG was to pay for it. (Maybe a better way to spend the money than the two WAG trains!)
