170271 moved by road from the mnr to wolverton

apparently greater anglia 170271 has been moved by rail from norwich crown point to the mid norfolk railway and then by road from the mnr to wolverton works does anyone know why this move has happened?

Usually things going to the Mid Norfolk Railway mean that they are to be taken by road somewhere as access into Crown Point is known to be difficult. Where it's off to I have know idea, but it sounds like it's going off the rails for a bit.

Went under its own power Crown Point to Dereham just after 09.00. Transfered this afternoon to a low loader.

I think the original title of this thread may be wrong judging by the post before yours.

It sounds like it went under its own power to Dereham from Norwich.

From there it's been put on a lorry for transfer to wherever it's going.

I guess unless someone can shed some light on its destination it's difficult to establish whether or not moving it by road is a 'crazy backward thing' or not.

Ohh I see sorry I thought judging by the title for some reason it went to Wymondham then went on a lorry to the MNR.

Should be away for approx 3wks. Both vehicles went so it can be returned by rail.

I believe it's for accident repair works after a car found the side of the 79 vehicle on the East Suffolk Line a few weeks ago. Moved under its own power to the MNR to be transported to Wolverton by road.

I'm not sure why it couldn't be taken to Wolverton by rail, because if it was fit to run to Dereham, it should have been fit to run to Wolverton. Pathing shouldn't be an issue.

Maybe the damage meant it could only be moved at reduced speed, perhaps?

If they just sent one coach by road then they would just have to pay for two road moves (vehicle 1 out and back). I think there must be another reason - perhaps that they need the whole unit for testing?

170271 is a Greater Anglia Class 170. It lives at Crown Point and is going to Wolverton for repairs after being hit by a car.

Possibly would have meant leaving the good half at Dereham & not secure enough or permitted insurance wise. The unit was allowed to travel at 50mph Norwich-Wymondham so seems strange it couldnt get to Wolverton considering On Track Machines often do 45mph across the network.

To do it by rail would have either meant via London - which is congested or via Peterborough, Leicester - and then either via Bedford and Bletchley or Nuneaton and Northampton (there's no way it would have been allowed on the fasts between Rugby and MK...... ).

When you consider some of those places don't have that many free slots, it may simply have been decided road made more sense.
