Doh! 17:03 is broken down north of Potters Bar. Stuck brake on driving engine - not hard to diagnose from the stink the carriages. Oddly, it left KGX in reverse formation, and everyone from M has been redistributed into K and L.

TBH the new EC recruits aren't faring very well. After 40 mins there's just been a trolley of water and biscuits going through 1st.

Edit: Hurrah! We're moving...40 mins late into PBO

Indeed it was the 17:03 Kings Cross to Leeds which came to a stand just north of Potters Bar after the driver reported seeing smoke coming from under the train.

Delays of 10 minutes or more to be expected especially as all services had to be diverted onto the Slow so the broken down train could be looked at.

We passed you just after it stopped. I noticed it was in reverse formation when it left (platform 8 wasn't it?). 91113?

I was on the FCC 17:23 Royston service from Platform 11 at KX (It usually goes from 8 but I see that platfrom 8 is out of use at the moment). Doors had closed & we had just started to move when we stopped - one of the passenger assistance alarms had been triggered.
Platform staff & driver investigate. After waitifn for the signal to clear again we leave at 17:30.
The 17:30 EC Newcastle service (formed of the purple "flying scotsman" 91 & DVT) wait for us to switch to the fast line ahead of it at Finsbury Park. We come to a halt a Hadley Wood alongside a 313 for some time, then move forward & switch to the slow line where we over take the 17:03 Leeds train which was moving very slowly on the fast line.
17:03 overtakes us near Hatfield & we switch back to fast at WGC but have to wait for the Cambridge stopper to call at Welwyn North ahead of us. We arrived in Stevenage about 26 minutes late.

That set's been in reverse order all day, it stopped at Stevenage a number of times.

Points failure later at Doncaster (north end of platform 4) further delayed several of those stuck by the earlier problems, platform 8 and 3 used to get around the failure (clutch on the points). Leeds bound service trapped on 4, Harrogate EC service came to the rescue of the Leeds passengers when it pulled into platform 8.
